Las Vegas Sports Teams Pay Tribute to Fallen Troopers and UNLV Shooting Victims

Nevada Highway Patrol - Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix

The Las Vegas Raiders observed a moment of silence before their game against the Minnesota Vikings at Allegiant Stadium to honor recent community tragedies. The tribute recognized the victims of two separate incidents: the fatal shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and the deaths of Nevada Highway Patrol troopers Michael Abbate and Alberto Felix, who lost their lives in the line of duty on November 30.

During the pregame festivities, star defensive end Maxx Crosby carried a UNLV flag and another flag honoring the fallen troopers. These flags were displayed at midfield alongside the American flag as part of the ceremony.

The announcement for the moment of silence was made just before the national anthem, acknowledging both the troopers and the three UNLV professors who were tragically killed in the shooting.

In a similar gesture, the Las Vegas Golden Knights were also expected to honor the victims in their game against the San Jose Sharks at T-Mobile Arena. These acts of remembrance by the sports teams reflect the community's solidarity and respect for those affected by these tragedies.

Harry Reid International Airport to Pilot New Self-Service TSA Screening

The Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are set to test a new self-service TSA screening system, "Screening at Speed," at Harry Reid International Airport starting January. The system is aimed at enabling passengers, particularly those in the Trusted Traveler Program, to undergo airport security checks with minimal contact from TSA officers.

John Fortune, the Screening at Speed Program Manager, explained that the system would allow travelers to use individual screening consoles or lanes, reducing the need for physical inspections and freeing TSA officers for more demanding tasks. This pilot program is part of a broader initiative to streamline airport security processes, with positive feedback already received from testing.

The program will be implemented at the airport's Innovation Checkpoint, located at Terminal 3's Zero Level. This area is dedicated to testing advancements in aviation security technologies.

Vanderlande Industries Inc. developed the PAX MX2 system being tested, which integrates the company's automated screening lane for carry-on bags with existing TSA equipment. The system features four stations per checkpoint lane, each equipped with instructional video monitors and a help button linking to live assistance.

The PAX MX2 includes a screening portal with automated entry and exit doors. Passengers who fail initial screening can remove problematic items and undergo re-screening. Successful screening results in the automatic opening of the exit door.

The initiative reflects efforts to enhance airport security efficiency, particularly in the wake of increased travel following COVID-19 restrictions. The Innovation Checkpoint at Reid Airport, featuring automated screening and UV-C light sanitization for bins, reiterates the TSA's commitment to improving security and health safety for travelers.

Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium to Benefit from Verizon Network Boost

Verizon has been upgrading its network at Allegiant Stadium to ensure optimal cellular service for the upcoming Super Bowl, where high data usage is anticipated from tens of thousands of fans. Bradley Frank, a senior system performance engineer for Verizon, expressed the goal of seamless network performance for all users during the event.

To enhance cellular data capabilities, nearly every area inside and outside the stadium has been upgraded. This includes installing new nodes, radio devices in suites, signal boosters in concourse areas, and antennas outside the stadium. Patrick Pesnell, director of engineering for DAS Group Professionals, expects a data usage record to be set at the Super Bowl in February.

More than 275 pieces of equipment have been added to the stadium, most of which are discreetly placed in areas like ceilings or amidst other operational equipment. Verizon has used regular season Raiders games as trial runs for the upgraded system.

The upgrades, primarily for Verizon customers, are expected to accommodate around 40,000 Verizon users at the Super Bowl. Verizon's data usage at the 2023 Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, was significant, with 60% of the 68,000 attendees using 47.8 terabytes of data – an amount equivalent to three years of nonstop HD video streaming.

Verizon anticipates a further increase in data usage for the 2024 Super Bowl, particularly with the introduction of newer apps. Matt Pasco, vice president of technology for the Raiders, confirmed that the upgrades at Allegiant Stadium are permanent, benefitting all future events.

Entertainment Icon Bernie Yuman Makes First Bet at Durango's STN Sports Book

Bernie Yuman, the renowned manager of the famous entertainment duo Siegfried & Roy, made the inaugural bet at the STN sports book located in Durango on Tuesday. Yuman, known for his optimism and contributions to the entertainment industry, placed a bet on the Las Vegas Raiders against the Minnesota Vikings in their upcoming game at Allegiant Stadium.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the city and its growing sports scene, Yuman highlighted Las Vegas's ascent as a premier NFL city, hosting major events such as the NFL draft and the Super Bowl. His bet on the Raiders over the Vikings was made at the sports book inside The George Sportsmen's Lounge, a part of Fine Entertainment's multi-experience venue.

When asked about the amount of his wager, Yuman jokingly replied, "A million dollars!" before laughing. His bet, irrespective of the actual amount, symbolizes his support and excitement for the local NFL team and the city's sports culture.

UNLV Falls to Loyola Marymount in Tight Jack Jones Classic Match

In the Jack Jones Classic at Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, UNLV faced a close defeat against Loyola Marymount with a final score of 78-75. The game's pivotal moment came in the last seconds when UNLV's freshman point guard, Dedan Thomas Jr., missed a crucial floater that could have turned the game around. Loyola Marymount's Alex Merkviladze then secured the win with two successful free throws.

This was UNLV's first game since a campus shooting on Nov. 28 tragically left three faculty members dead and another injured, leading to a postponed game against Dayton. Coach Kevin Kruger acknowledged the challenges faced by the players due to the tragedy and the university's support in providing resources to students.

UNLV, now with a 3-4 record, was led by Thomas, who scored 17 points and provided eight assists. Kalib Boone contributed 15 points before fouling out, and Isaiah Cottrell added 14 points. Loyola Marymount's standout performance came from reserve guard Dominick Harris, who scored 28 points. The absence of Jalen Hill, UNLV's leading rebounder, was felt as Marymount dominated in offensive rebounds and second-chance points.

Kruger highlighted the need for UNLV to be more aggressive and resilient. Despite lineup changes and strategic rotations, UNLV struggled with foul trouble and free throw disparities. The game was competitive throughout the second half, but UNLV failed to secure the necessary defensive stops, leading to their defeat.

Vegas Knights Secure Season Sweep Over Dallas Stars with Stellar Performance

The Vegas Golden Knights achieved a convincing 6-1 victory against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center, completing a season series sweep. This win, in contrast to their previous encounters that ended in a shootout and overtime, saw the Knights dominate throughout the entire game.

Key players for the Knights included Mark Stone, Nicolas Roy, Zach Whitecloud, and Paul Cotter, each contributing a goal and an assist. This victory marked the Knights' advancement to an 18-5-5 record and handed the Stars (15-8-3) their first five-goal regular-season home loss since January 2022.

Chandler Stephenson initiated the scoring early in the game, followed by Whitecloud, helping the Knights become the first NHL team to reach 40 points this season. Coach Bruce Cassidy praised the team's early scoring and their defensive efforts to maintain the lead.

Zach Whitecloud, playing his 200th career game, had a notable performance with a plus-3 rating and was credited with the game-winning goal. The victory also continued the Knights' successful streak during their annual dads' trip, improving to 9-0-1 and extending their streak of earning at least one point in seven consecutive games.
