Candlelight Vigil at UNLV to Remember Three Professors
A vigil honoring the memory of the three slain professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2023, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the Pida Plaza, located near the Student Union and the School of Medicine.
The vigil is organized to remember the lives of the three professors who were tragically killed in a shooting on the campus earlier this week. The university community and the public are invited to attend the outdoor event, which will include a moment of silence, remarks from university leaders, and an opportunity to share memories and support one another.
In the wake of the tragedy, the university has also set up a memorial fund to support the families of the victims and to help with the costs of the vigil and other memorial events. Donations can be made through the university's website or at the vigil itself.
The university encourages attendees to bring candles, flowers, and other items to place at the memorial site. The vigil is expected to be an emotional and poignant event, as the community comes together to mourn the loss of the three professors and to support one another in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Howard Hughes Corp Sells 44.7 Acres in Summerlin, Signaling Real Estate Market Dynamics
In the first quarter of the year, The Howard Hughes Corporation sold 44.7 acres of residential land in Summerlin, Las Vegas' largest master-planned community, at an average price of $647,000 per acre. This sale saw an increase in land sold compared to the same period last year, where 37.7 acres were sold at an average price of $697,000 per acre.
A notable transaction during this period was with Richmond American Homes, which purchased a 42.5-acre parcel for approximately $23.8 million on March 1. The homebuilder intends to construct around 100 single-family houses on this land.
Despite the land sale, The Howard Hughes Corporation reported a decline in overall profits. The company, with projects and properties in various locations, recorded $1.8 million in profit, representing a 68% decrease year-over-year. Their expenses decreased by 15%, to about $159.1 million, while their revenue dropped by 30%, to $161.7 million. The decrease in revenue was mainly attributed to a required accounting change related to condo sales.
These developments shed light on the ongoing activity in the real estate market in Summerlin and the broader financial performance of The Howard Hughes Corporation.
Adelsons' Las Vegas Sands Acquires 108 Acres Near Dallas Ahead of Mavericks Purchase
In a surprising turn of events, the Adelson family, known for their Las Vegas Sands empire, acquired a 108-acre plot in Irving, Texas, just months before their high-profile purchase of the Dallas Mavericks from Mark Cuban. This land, situated across from the former Texas Stadium, has sparked rumors of a potential casino-resort development, a Las Vegas Sands specialty.
The Adelsons' long-standing interest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and their desire to build an integrated resort property in the region only fuel these speculations. However, both the Adelson family and Las Vegas Sands spokesperson Ron Reese have stated that the land acquisition was unrelated to the Mavericks deal.
Despite the potential for a casino-resort development, sports betting and casinos are currently illegal in Texas. The Adelsons' political influence may sway state legislators to legalize gambling, but a Sands-backed proposal was rejected earlier this year. Mark Cuban has publicly declared that the Mavericks will not relocate, and the Dallas City Council is working to ensure the team stays in the city, with lease agreements at the American Airlines Center extending until 2031.
In the end, only time will tell if the Adelsons' vision for a casino-resort in the area will come to fruition. For now, the Dallas Mavericks continue to call the American Airlines Center home, and the future of gambling in Texas remains uncertain.
Las Vegas' M Resort Set for Transformation with $206 Million Expansion Plan
The M Resort, situated in Henderson, Nevada, is embarking on a significant expansion project with a budget of $206 million. This ambitious plan will nearly double the size of the hotel-casino by adding a new 378-room tower and other amenities, marking the first major renovation since its opening in 2009. The expansion is expected to benefit the local market and group business, capitalizing on the hotel-casino's partnership with the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders.
Currently, M Resort boasts 390 rooms, and the new tower will increase the total to 774 rooms and suites, making it the largest hotel-casino in Henderson. The expansion will also make up for the loss of 224 rooms due to the closure and demolition of Fiesta Henderson. M Resort's partnerships with local sports teams, including the Henderson Silver Knights and the Vegas Knight Hawks, are part of its strategy to capture the local sports team market, which has led to increased room rates and occupancy.
M Resort, which opened in 2009 at a cost of $1 billion, had its financial future stabilized when Penn, based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, acquired the resort's debt in 2010. The land under M Resort is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties, which is expected to help finance the redevelopment. This expansion is part of Penn's larger $850 million development plan, which also includes a hotel tower in Columbus, Ohio, and the conversion of two Illinois riverboat casinos into land-based gaming properties.
Vikings Clinch Historic 3-0 Victory Over Raiders in NFL's Lowest-Scoring Game Since 2007
In a stunning NFL showdown on December 10, 2023, the Minnesota Vikings triumphed over the Las Vegas Raiders in a nail-biting 3-0 victory. This remarkable game made history as the lowest-scoring NFL match in 16 years, a stark contrast to the league's typically high-scoring affairs.
The game-winning score came from a 36-yard field goal by Greg Joseph with a mere 1:57 left on the clock. This memorable 3-0 score had not been seen since the Pittsburgh Steelers' victory over the Miami Dolphins on November 26, 2007.
It is also only the third such low-scoring game in the past 40 years and the seventh in the Super Bowl era. The last time a game ended regulation play with a scoreless tie was on November 7, 1943, between the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions.
Coach La Rocque Leads UNLV Lady Rebels to Top 25 Ranking, a 29-Year Milestone
In a groundbreaking moment for the UNLV Lady Rebels women's basketball team, they have secured a spot in the Associated Press Women's Basketball Top 25, coming in at No. 23. This marks the second time under head coach Lindy La Rocque that the team has been ranked in the AP Top 25.
This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it has been 29 years since the last time a ranked women's basketball team represented UNLV, with the previous ranking being in the January 18, 1994, poll. Furthermore, this ranking is the highest for the program since March 9, 1993.
The Lady Rebels' impressive 9-0 start to the season has propelled them into the Top 25. This is the first time this season that a Mountain West team has earned a ranking in the AP Top 25. The team's success and progress under Coach La Rocque's leadership is a testament to the flourishing women's basketball program at UNLV.
Tragic Murder-Suicide in Las Vegas Leaves Four Dead, One Critically Injured
A tragic incident occurred in northwest Las Vegas Valley, where a man reportedly shot three children and a woman, before turning the gun on himself, leading to a suspected murder-suicide. The incident took place on Monday in the 7500 block of Oso Blanca Road at around 10:03 a.m.
Of the five individuals found with gunshot wounds, four were declared dead, including two juveniles, an adult male, and an adult female. The fifth victim, a juvenile, was critically injured and taken to UMC Trauma, described as "clinging to life." All three children were under the age of 14.
The police were alerted to the scene by a man who went to check on his brother and found the victims. Notably, no gunshots were reported by neighbors. The relationship between the deceased individuals was not clear, and it was revealed that the shooter had been under house arrest, though further details were not provided.
This incident is a reminder of the challenges and distress that some face, especially during the holiday season, with Lt. Robert Price emphasizing the availability of support networks like hotlines, friends, and family to prevent such tragedies.
Las Vegas Man Sentenced to Over 5 Years for Multi-State Bank Fraud and Identity Theft
Anubor Bagbi, a 63-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison following his conviction for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. The U.S. Attorney's Office detailed Bagbi's criminal activities, which occurred between May and December 2022.
Bagbi executed a scheme involving fraudulent or stolen checks issued to legitimate companies. He then established fraudulent bank accounts in various states, including Idaho, using the names of the businesses on these checks. To facilitate this, Bagbi registered the business names with the Secretary of State and secured employer identification numbers from the IRS. He used false identifications, fabricated tax documents, and utility bills to open these accounts.
Furthermore, starting in April 2020, Bagbi exploited the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) under the CARES Act. He submitted fraudulent documents and applications in both his name and others' names for non-existent businesses, resulting in a loss of over $664,000. The combined loss from his bank and COVID-related fraud schemes amounted to $886,879.86.
Bagbi's sentence also includes a five-year supervised release and a restitution payment of $886,879.86. U.S. Attorney Hurwit condemned Bagbi's actions, stating that he "callously victimized businesses, individuals, and the American taxpayers" through his schemes. The case highlights the commitment of law enforcement to bring those who commit such frauds to justice.
