A Mission of Giving

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission is not just a charity; it is a lifeline for many. This December, the mission is accepting donations at the Gardens, Trails, Vistas, and Willows Community Centers, inviting the community to share in the joy of giving. The items sought include blankets, winter coats, bath towels, underwear, and essential hygiene products, along with child and baby items like diapers and pajamas. These donations are more than just goods; they are gestures of hope and care for those facing challenging times.

More Than Just a Hand-Out

What sets the Las Vegas Rescue Mission apart is its philosophy of offering a 'hand-up, not just a hand-out.' This approach goes beyond mere charity; it's about empowering individuals. The mission provides meals, clothing, household items, and crucial life-skills counseling, all designed to help people regain their footing in life. It's a testament to the mission's belief in the potential of every individual to overcome adversity with the right support.

A Community United

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission's initiative is a reflection of the community's spirit. It's a reminder that amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, there's a community ready to support its most vulnerable members. The mission's efforts in December are not just about collecting items; they're about bringing people together, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Join the Mission

As the holiday season approaches, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission invites everyone to be part of this noble cause. Whether it's through donating goods or volunteering time, every contribution makes a difference. It's an opportunity for the residents of Las Vegas to show that their city is not just about bright lights and entertainment, but also about warmth, generosity, and community spirit. Learn More.

Tuberculosis Scare: Health Officials at SNHD Conducting Thorough Investigation in Clark County Schools

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), in collaboration with the Clark County School District, is investigating a tuberculosis (TB) case involving 26 school campuses. A person with active TB disease visited these campuses, potentially exposing others. The health district's preliminary findings indicate minimal close contact at most schools, with no exposures identified at eight campuses.

Significant attention is focused on Ruthe Deskin Elementary School, where students and staff are at risk of exposure. Other schools under investigation include Bruner ES, Carl ES, Centennial HS, among others.

Health officials emphasize that not all exposed individuals will be infected and not all infected individuals will develop active TB. Screening and testing are being conducted to identify latent TB infections, which are not contagious. The Health District is treating exposed individuals to prevent the progression to active TB disease.

No contacts have been identified in several investigated schools, such as Allen ES and Conners ES. For further inquiries, the Health District has established an Information Line, available weekdays.

Las Vegas Aviators Seek National Anthem Performers for 2024 Season

The Las Vegas Ballpark is gearing up for the 2024 Las Vegas Aviators season by inviting talented singers and groups to audition for the honor of performing the national anthem. Interested individuals and ensembles are encouraged to submit a YouTube link or audio file of their a cappella rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner to [email protected] by noon on December 29th.

Applicants need to provide their name, phone number, email address, and information on any previous performances of the national anthem at the Ballpark. The game entertainment department of the Las Vegas Aviators will review these submissions and notify selected finalists to schedule final in-person auditions. These auditions will take place on January 23rd and 24th, 2024, at the Las Vegas Ballpark.

It's important to note that there are no age restrictions for applicants, and those who have previously performed the anthem at the Ballpark are still required to go through the submission process.

Las Vegas' Pinkbox Doughnuts Expands with Tenth Location at Boca Park in Summerlin

Pinkbox Doughnuts, a popular Las Vegas-based doughnut chain, is expanding its footprint with a new location planned for Summerlin’s Boca Park at 800 S Rampart Blvd., Suite 170. This new store marks the tenth addition to its existing nine locations across Las Vegas and Henderson. The expansion also includes a branch in George, Utah, and at Laughlin's Edgewater Casino.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Pinkbox is offering a range of festive doughnuts. These include the Christmas Ring, a chocolate-frosted raised ring with holiday sprinkles; the Pink Santa, a glazed pink velvet cake topped with cream cheese buttercream and candy cane; and the Candy Cane Cheesecake, a red-frosted raised shell filled with candy cane cheesecake.

Additionally, Pinkbox serves a variety of coffee drinks, such as Flavored Iced Lattes, Iced White Chocolate Mocha, and Vanilla Nitro Cold Brew.

The new Boca Park location, situated near the intersection of S Rampart Blvd and Boca Park, will be in the company of other popular food and drink establishments like The Cheesecake Factory, Kona Grill, and McDonald’s.

Vegas Golden Knights Fall 5-2 to Buffalo Sabres, Ending Winning Run

The Vegas Golden Knights faced a defeat against the Buffalo Sabres, ending their four-game winning streak with a 5-2 loss. This game marked the Knights' first regulation loss since late November, altering their season record to 20-6-5.

The match began with a scoreless first period, followed by a disallowed goal from the Knights due to a roughing penalty. The Sabres capitalized on this with Dylan Cozens scoring during the power play. The Golden Knights equalized later in the second period through Ivan Barbashev's goal, leading to a 1-1 tie into the third.

In the final period, Jack Eichel briefly put the Knights ahead, but the Sabres responded with a goal from Casey Mittelstadt, igniting a scoring spree. The Sabres netted two more goals, leaving the Knights trailing 4-2. Despite efforts, the Knights couldn't close the gap, and the Sabres sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

The Golden Knights are set to conclude their four-game home stand against the Ottawa Senators before embarking on a road trip.

UFC: Edwards Triumphs Amid Personal Strife; Pantoja Keeps Flyweight Belt

The recent UFC event was marked by emotional and intense battles, with several fighters defending their titles. Edwards, deeply affected by his opponent using his father's death as a taunt, managed to channel his rage into a victorious performance, despite the emotional toll.

In the flyweight division, Alexandre Pantoja successfully defended his title against Brandon Royval, winning by unanimous decision. Pantoja, who previously submitted Royval, had a controlled and cautious fight, earning a near-sweep of the scorecards.

Welterweight fighter Shavkat Rakhmonov maintained his unbeaten record, now standing at 18-0, by securing a last-second choke out against Stephen Thompson in the second round. This victory strengthens Rakhmonov's claim for a title shot.

Tony Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion, suffered a unanimous decision loss to Paddy Pimblett, marking his seventh consecutive defeat and possibly signaling the end of his career in the sport.

Other notable fights included a thunderous knockout by featherweight Josh Emmett and a preliminary card headline by Cody Garbrandt, who achieved a first-round knockout against Brian Kelleher. Irene Aldana also secured a unanimous-decision victory in a fiercely contested women's bantamweight fight.

The event was also marked by the presence of high-profile figures, including former President Donald Trump, musician Kid Rock, and actor Mario Lopez.

Rising Vehicle Theft Epidemic in Las Vegas Targets Kia’s and Hyundai’s

The Las Vegas Valley is experiencing a significant rise in vehicle thefts in 2023, particularly affecting owners of Kia’s and Hyundai’s. This surge is linked to a social media trend known as the 'Kia Boyz', which began with a YouTube documentary about teen car thieves in Milwaukee and has since spread nationwide. Viral videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram demonstrate how to bypass security features in specific Kia and Hyundai models, contributing to the increase in thefts.

Victims like Cassidy Faulkner and Kris Zeppetella have had their Hyundai Elantras stolen multiple times, illustrating the personal impact and disruption caused by these crimes. Despite efforts like Hyundai's free anti-theft update introduced in February 2023, thefts continue, causing some owners to reconsider their brand loyalty.

The Metropolitan Police Department's statistics show a 37% increase in motor vehicle thefts over the previous year, with even higher rates in specific areas like the Northwest Area Command. The problem extends to North Las Vegas and Henderson, with significant jumps in vehicle thefts, particularly targeting models like the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima.

Insurance companies and policyholders are feeling the effects, with some carriers ceasing to write policies for certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles. This rise in auto thefts not only disrupts individuals' daily lives but also potentially impacts insurance rates across the region.
