Clark County Schools to Host Large-Scale TB Testing Following Exposure Incident

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is responding to a tuberculosis (TB) exposure at 26 Clark County schools. A person who visited these campuses and has since been isolated and treated was the source of the exposure. To address this, SNHD is organizing a large-scale testing event for over 600 potentially exposed individuals, scheduled for late January at Ruthe Deskin Elementary School.

Jennifer Bowers, a disease investigator with SNHD, confirmed that there is no ongoing exposure risk. She emphasized that TB, typically marked by symptoms like persistent cough, chest pain, and night sweats, does not spread as easily as viruses like COVID-19. Close, repeated contact is necessary for transmission.

Officials have reassured that students can safely return to school, noting that measures have been taken to halt further spread. TB, which can be fatal, is treatable with antibiotics. The health district typically sees 40-60 TB cases annually.

It is worth noting that the Southern Nevada Health District has been actively monitoring and addressing cases of tuberculosis in the region for years. In 2019, the district reported 58 cases of TB, which was slightly lower than the 63 cases reported in 2018. The district's efforts to control the spread of TB include providing free or low-cost treatment to those affected and conducting contact investigations to identify and test individuals who may have been exposed to the disease.

In light of the recent exposure at Clark County schools, it is important for the community to remain vigilant and informed about the signs and symptoms of TB. Early detection and treatment are crucial in preventing the spread of the disease and ensuring the best possible outcome for those affected.

In conclusion, the Southern Nevada Health District is taking appropriate measures to address the tuberculosis exposure at 26 Clark County schools, and students can safely return to school. The district has a history of monitoring and controlling TB cases in the region and will continue to provide support and resources to those affected.

New Nevada Laws: Higher Cannabis Limits and Stricter Tobacco Penalties

Starting January 1st, Nevada will introduce more than 80 new laws, affecting a range of topics including cannabis possession, tobacco sales, driver's ID, food delivery robots, and voting in jails.

Cannabis Possession Limits Increased:

Senate Bill 277 allows for the doubling of cannabis possession limits from one ounce to two and a half ounces for both recreational and medical users. Concentrate limits also double from 3.5 grams to 7 grams. Dispensaries can now serve both medical and recreational users, with reduced establishment license fees. A new process will be implemented to allow certain felons to work in the cannabis industry.

Stricter Fines for Tobacco Sales to Minors:

Assembly Bill 53 increases fines for selling tobacco to under-21s, with penalties ranging from $2,500 for the first offense to up to $10,000 for subsequent violations.

Communication Impairments on IDs:

A new law enables individuals with communication impairments, such as autism or speech disorders, to indicate their condition on driver's licenses or ID cards, aiming to improve interactions with law enforcement.

Regulations for Food Delivery Robots:

Senate Bill 422 sets new rules for food delivery robots on higher education campuses and adjacent areas. The robots must weigh less than 150 pounds, travel at a maximum speed of 10 mph, and carry liability insurance.

Voting Rights in Jails:

Assembly Bill 286 establishes a process for mail-in voting for inmates awaiting trial or serving misdemeanor sentences. Paid Family Leave for State Employees:

Assembly Bill 376 grants state employees eight weeks of paid family leave for various family and health-related reasons.

Allegiant Air to Halt Flights Between Reno and Las Vegas in January 2024

Allegiant Air, a well-known ultra-low-cost airline, has recently announced that it will be discontinuing its flights between Reno and Las Vegas, along with all other services to Reno, starting January 7, 2024. This decision comes as a result of several factors, including demand, crew availability, competitive capacity, and operational costs.

Andrew Porrello, a spokesperson for Allegiant, stated that the decision was not made lightly and that the company had to weigh the various factors before making the difficult choice. He also expressed gratitude to the Reno community and the airport for their support since the service's inception in 2013.

Despite Allegiant's focus on discounted leisure travel, the airline has been a prominent presence in the industry, ranking as the seventh-largest carrier at Harry Reid International Airport. With over 2 million passengers carried this year until November, Allegiant sits between Frontier Airlines and Alaska Airlines in terms of passenger volume.

The airline's final flight to Reno-Tahoe International Airport will be on January 7, 2024. Allegiant will continue to evaluate its service routes, but for now, the discontinuation of flights to and from Reno marks the end of an era for the airline's presence in the region.

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Seattle Kraken: An Innovative Winter Classic Under Seattle's Sky

T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA

The NHL's Winter Classic, featuring the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, will take place under the unique conditions of T-Mobile Park's retractable roof. This 215-foot-tall, 11,000-ton roof, covering nearly nine acres, is crucial for the event in Seattle's rainy winter. The roof, powered by 96 engines, has been essential in preparing the hockey rink, shielding it from the region's notorious rain.

This game, the 39th outdoor event by the NHL, is intended to be played in the open air, weather permitting. Current forecasts suggest favorable conditions, with a mix of sun and clouds, making the roof's retraction possible for an authentic outdoor experience. The roof, typically used to protect Seattle Mariners baseball games, provided a reliable shelter during the rink's construction, reducing the need for weather-related contingencies.

Dean Matsuzaki, NHL's executive vice president of events, highlighted the confidence this allowed in scheduling the rink's build. The choice of T-Mobile Park over larger or more scenic venues like Lumen Field or Husky Stadium was due to its retractable roof, demonstrating the NHL's commitment to an outdoor game experience while being prepared for Seattle's unpredictable weather.

The league's decision-making process involves consulting local meteorologists and league executives, with the possibility of partially covering the stadium in case of rain. The NHL aims to deliver an outdoor game experience without relying on the roof, a lesson learned from a previous event in Vancouver where weather conditions forced a closed roof, impacting the desired atmosphere.

Seattle Kraken players, like Jared McCann, are excited about the unique setup, recognizing the NHL's efforts to enhance the Winter Classic each year.

The Winter Classic, an annual event held on or around New Year's Day, is a celebration of the league's history and the sport of hockey itself. The first Winter Classic, held in 2008, featured the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. Since then, the event has grown in popularity and has been held at iconic venues such as Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and Michigan Stadium.

The NHL's decision to bring the Winter Classic to Seattle's T-Mobile Park is a testament to the league's commitment to expanding the game and providing unique experiences for both fans and players. The retractable roof not only adds a unique element to the event but also serves as a practical solution to the unpredictable weather conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

With the excitement surrounding the upcoming game between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken, the NHL is poised to deliver another unforgettable Winter Classic experience. As the league continues to innovate and adapt, fans and players alike can look forward to more exciting and memorable outdoor games in the future.
