๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ถโโ๏ธ๐ Downtown Las Vegas Set to Host Vibrant MLK Day Parade
The 42nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Las Vegas is set to take place on Monday morning, with assembly starting at 8 a.m. and the parade commencing at 10 a.m. The parade route will run along Fourth Street, beginning at Gass Avenue and concluding at Ogden Avenue. This year's theme, "Living the Dream โ Together We Make the Dream Work," is a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and collective action in achieving social progress.
Grand marshals for the parade include Bobby Ray McRoy, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, and Bishops Tommy and Shirley Collier. These individuals have been chosen for their outstanding contributions to the community and their dedication to upholding the values of equality and justice for all. Youth marshals, Jeremiah Fennell and Alliah Jordan, will also be present to represent the next generation of leaders and inspire hope for a brighter future.
Road closures in the area will begin at 6 a.m., so be sure to plan your travel accordingly. The National Weather Service has forecasted no rain for the event, with temperatures ranging from 50 to 58 degrees Fahrenheit, making for a pleasant day to enjoy the parade.
The parade is just one of the many events scheduled as part of King Week, which includes a technology summit and scholarship banquet, as well as other activities that celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These events provide opportunities for the community to come together, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the ongoing pursuit of racial equality and social justice.
The main viewing stage for the parade will be located at Fourth and Bridger Avenue, providing an excellent vantage point for spectators to witness the vibrant floats, marching bands, and other participants as they make their way through the streets of downtown Las Vegas. The parade will also be televised on Channel 13 for those who are unable to attend in person.
As we come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let us remember the importance of unity and collective action in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.
๐๐ฅ๐ฎโโ๏ธ Deputy District Attorney in Clark County Arrested for DUI After Speeding Incident
Kayla Farzaneh-Simmons
On January 7, 2024, around 5:07 p.m., 28-year-old Clark County Deputy District Attorney, Kayla Farzaneh-Simmons, was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless driving at the intersection of W. Sunset Rd. and S. Rainbow Blvd. in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police reported that she was driving at 73 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, which is more than double the speed limit.
The police officer who pulled her over noted that she had watery and slightly bloodshot eyes, spoke with slightly slurred speech, and there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from her vehicle. Farzaneh-Simmons admitted to having consumed alcohol but declined to perform a field sobriety test, opting instead to provide a blood sample.
After the blood test, Farzaneh-Simmons was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and charged with two misdemeanor offenses. She has been employed by Clark County since September 2022 and is scheduled to appear in court on May 6 to face the charges.
๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ Iowa Caucus Eve: DeSantis and Haley Campaign in Cold as Trump Leads Polls
Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley campaigned in Iowa on Saturday, seeking support as alternatives to Donald Trump in the upcoming Republican primary. Trump, who is leading in polls, conducted "tele-rallies" due to a blizzard, while expressing confidence in a win to counter potential rivals. He hosted a livestreamed event in Des Moines, expressing concern about weather affecting turnout. The focus is on whether DeSantis or Haley can secure a strong second-place finish.
In a recent poll, Trump led with nearly half the support, followed by Haley and DeSantis. Both candidates took advantage of Trump's modified schedule to meet more voters. Iowans remain undecided, with some considering both Trump and DeSantis.
The candidates discussed issues like the border crisis, racial divide, and Trump's influence. The weather may impact turnout, with historically low temperatures expected on caucus day. The campaign trail moves to Dubuque on Sunday, with both candidates avoiding direct criticisms of each other.
๐ Flames Blaze Past Golden Knights in a Thrilling 3-1 Hockey Showdown
In an exciting matchup at the T-Mobile Arena, the Calgary Flames clinched a 3-1 victory over the Golden Knights. Key players Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman played a crucial role in the win, with each contributing a goal and an assist.
The Golden Knights, hindered by the absence of their star player Jack Eichel, struggled to maintain their ground. Chandler Stephenson managed to score for the Knights, ensuring they avoided a complete shutout. The game's momentum shifted early in favor of the Flames when Coleman scored a power-play goal, which was soon followed by a strategic goal from Nazem Kadri.
Backlund further strengthened Calgary's position with a decisive goal late in the second period. This victory improved Calgary's season record to 20-18-5, while the Knights' record stood at 24-14-5 following the game.
