๐ง๐ซ Protecting Las Vegas' Children: A Pre-Super Bowl Mission Against Trafficking
As Las Vegas gears up for Super Bowl LVIII, the city is confronting a significant challenge: child sex trafficking. This growing issue is highlighted by the story of Chelsea Hutton, a survivor and now an advocate in Southern Nevada. Hutton, who became a victim at 19, endured physical violence and lived in constant fear during her years in trafficking.
With millions globally affected by this issue, the U.S. Department of State estimates around 27.6 million people are victimized at any given time. Such risks escalate around major events, making Las Vegas more vigilant in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl.
Margarita Edwards, Executive Director of Nevada Child Seekers, emphasizes the urgency of protecting children, especially those missing or living on the streets. The organization is intensifying efforts to locate vulnerable youth before the event.
Their message is clear: they are dedicated to ensuring the safety of children and are actively working to prevent potential predators from causing harm. Hutton's personal journey serves as both a warning and a beacon of hope, aiming to help others feel seen and supported.
Nevada Child Seekers will conduct a three-day City Search to find missing children from February 1-3 at 4425 W. Tropicana Avenue, Las Vegas. For more information, call 702-458-7009. Sign up here.
๐ Las Vegas' Flamingo Road Bridge to be Dismantled, Easing Business Owners' Concerns
The temporary bridge at Flamingo Road and Koval Lane, constructed for the Formula One Grand Prix in November, is set for dismantling. This decision comes as a relief to local businesses that have been adversely affected by the bridge. Shop owners in the area, like Wade Bohn of Jay's Market and Randy Markin, owner of Stage Door and Battistaโs restaurant, expressed their concerns about the bridge driving away customers and threatening their livelihoods.
Bohn, in particular, highlighted the significant drop in his business revenue and customer footfall due to the bridge. In December 2022, his sales and customer numbers fell drastically compared to the previous year, leading him to fear for the survival of his business.
The dismantling process is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Sunday and will continue through February 1. Officials have assured that sidewalks will remain open and access to businesses will be maintained during the construction.
In response to the difficulties caused by the bridge, Clark County officials, along with race organizers, are re-evaluating the infrastructure for future events. Lisa Mayo DeRiso of Mayo & Associates praised the efforts of Clark County Commissioners in addressing the concerns of the business owners.
The removal of the bridge is timed to ensure its complete dismantling before the influx of visitors for the Super Bowl, offering a respite to the affected businesses.
๐ฅณ Las Vegas Entertainment: From Stefani's Super Bowl Party to Tony Orlando's Farewell Shows
Las Vegas is abuzz with exciting entertainment news. Gwen Stefani, a renowned singer and former Planet Hollywood headliner, is set to host the Super Bowl TikTok Tailgate livestream party, billed as the NFL's "ultimate pregame party." This event will feature several hours of live programming and special guests from the NFL and TikTok creators.
In other news, Penn & Teller are gearing up for the 11th season of their show "Fool Us" on The CW, a sign of the show's continuing success as the network's highest-rated program.
The Nevada School of the Arts recently celebrated a significant fundraising milestone, raising $400,000 at its Dream Gala. This event honored various supporters of the arts, including former Rep. Shelley Berkley and representatives from Cirque du Soleil.
In music, Tony Orlando, a beloved figure in Vegas and a 1970s hitmaker, is performing "Farewell Shows," referring to the end of his touring days, not his extended engagements.
The local entertainment scene also mourns the passing of Las Vegas comic Geechy Guy, who died of natural causes related to cardiovascular disease.
Lastly, Marlene Ricci, a classic singer and once a protรฉgรฉ of Frank Sinatra, is headlining at Notoriety Live, bringing to life timeless standards.
๐ Logan Thompson Shines as Golden Knights' Key Goaltender Amid Team Challenges
Logan Thompson of the Golden Knights is finding his stride at a crucial time, with recent performances showcasing his return to form. The 26-year-old goaltender from Alberta has allowed only seven goals in his last four starts, a marked improvement from the 20 goals conceded in the preceding five games.
Thompson's resurgence comes as the Golden Knights, grappling with injuries in their lineup and lower offensive output, are increasingly reliant on his skills. With his platoon mate, Adin Hill, sidelined due to a lower-body injury, Thompson is currently the team's primary goaltending option.
Despite the pressure, Thompson remains focused on his role without letting the team's situation weigh him down. His recent success is highlighted by a .943 save percentage, stopping 116 of the 123 shots faced in the last four games.
Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy commends Thompson's performance and his readiness to embrace the increased workload. Cassidy emphasizes that Thompson's role is not to compensate for the team's absences but to be the best version of himself.
The team's recent wins, including a 2-1 overtime victory against Boston and a 4-1 win over Nashville, demonstrate Thompson's ability to not just keep the team in the game, but to secure wins. As Thompson focuses solely on the upcoming games, including a match against the New York Rangers, he represents a key figure in the Knights' pursuit of success amidst challenges.
