๐ Sheriff McMahill Advocates for Speed and Red-Light Cameras in Las Vegas
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of Las Vegas has recently voiced his support for the installation of speed and red-light cameras in an effort to enhance traffic safety within the Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction. In a recent interview, the sheriff discussed the challenges faced by the department in maintaining safe traffic conditions and expressed his belief that even a substantial increase in traffic officers would not have the same impact as utilizing technological advancements like speed and red-light cameras.
Currently, Nevada state law prohibits the use of these cameras unless a law enforcement officer is present. As a result, Sheriff McMahill is advocating for a change in state law to allow for the implementation of these safety measures. This push for change comes in response to a slight increase in fatalities from crashes in the area, with numbers rising from 153 in 2022 to 156 in 2023.
Erin Breen, director of UNLVโs Road Equity Alliance Project, echoes the sheriff's sentiments, referring to speed and red-light cameras as "safety cameras." She believes that these devices have the potential to significantly improve traffic safety and reduce the number of accidents on the road.
However, the use of these cameras is not without controversy. There are concerns about their effectiveness in reducing traffic accidents and the potential for them to infringe upon the privacy of citizens. The ACLU of Nevada acknowledges the complexity of the issue, emphasizing concerns about potential surveillance overreach and the need for careful consideration of the constitutional implications of implementing such measures.
In light of these concerns, advocates for the use of speed and red-light cameras argue that the potential benefits to traffic safety outweigh the potential drawbacks. They point to examples in other cities where the use of these cameras has led to a significant decrease in traffic accidents and fatalities.
As the debate over the use of speed and red-light cameras in Las Vegas continues, both sides agree that the ultimate goal is to create safer roads and reduce the number of accidents. It remains to be seen whether state law will be amended to allow for the use of these cameras and whether they will ultimately be implemented in the city.
๐ซ Summerlin's Roseman University Plans Expansion, Aiming to Increase Student Enrollment by 146%
Roseman University, a renowned private institution with a strong focus on medical education, has recently unveiled its ambitious plans to expand its Summerlin campus in Nevada. The project, estimated to cost between $500 million to $550 million, is set to transform the current campus into a state-of-the-art medical school facility. The three-phase expansion is expected to be completed by 2032, with the university aiming to utilize the 32 acres of land it currently owns.
The expansion will not only enhance the campus's infrastructure but also significantly increase the number of students enrolled in the institution. With a projected enrollment rise from 750 to 1,850 students, Roseman University is poised to offer a comprehensive medical education to a larger cohort of aspiring healthcare professionals. This substantial increase in student numbers, a 146% rise, is a testament to the growing need for well-trained medical personnel in the region.
The expansion is a strategic response to the increasing population in Southern Nevada and the limited medical education resources available in the area. By addressing this pressing need, Roseman University is taking a proactive step towards ensuring that the region's healthcare needs are met in the future.
The economic impact of this expansion is projected to be substantial, with an estimated $1.86 billion in total economic impact, as well as supporting over 10,500 jobs. This significant contribution to the local economy is a clear indication of the university's commitment to the community and its dedication to improving the overall quality of life in the region.
A key component of the expansion is the introduction of a second Doctor of Medicine program in Southern Nevada. This much-needed program will provide a much-needed boost to the state's healthcare infrastructure, addressing the current challenges in healthcare access. Roseman University is currently working towards accreditation for this program and is confident in its ability to provide a high-quality education to its students.
The first phase of construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with the university actively seeking donations to support this ambitious project. With the support of the community, Roseman University is poised to make a significant impact on the future of healthcare in Southern Nevada.
๐จ Trump Hotel Las Vegas Workers Secure 'Best Contract Ever' Amidst Broader Negotiations
In a groundbreaking development for the Las Vegas labor scene, the Culinary Union has announced a significant labor agreement with the Trump Hotel Las Vegas. The tentative five-year contract, which comes after 16 hours of intense negotiations, covers approximately 350 union members. While the specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, the Culinary Union proudly declared it as the "BEST CONTRACT EVER" in a social media statement.
The Culinary Union has a strong track record of successful negotiations with major Las Vegas resorts. However, there are still 19 smaller and independent operators that are yet to reach an agreement with the union. These pending agreements affect around 7,000 workers, and the union is currently in talks with these operators to secure a favorable outcome for their members.
The pressure is mounting as the February 2 strike deadline at 5 a.m. approaches, just over a week before Super Bowl 58. The potential impact of a strike on the city's hospitality industry could be significant, as the event draws large crowds of tourists and sports fans to the area.
In addition to the ongoing negotiations, the Culinary Union is also organizing informational pickets at The Strat and Sahara on Friday. These demonstrations aim to raise awareness among workers and the public about the importance of fair labor practices and the ongoing negotiations.
This recent labor agreement between the Culinary Union and the Trump Hotel Las Vegas marks a crucial step in the union's efforts to secure better working conditions and benefits for its members. As the deadline for the remaining properties draws near, all eyes are on the union and the independent operators to see if they can reach a mutually beneficial resolution before the strike deadline.

๐ Allegiant Stadium Draws Over 3.6 Million Since 2021, Exceeding Expectations
The Las Vegas Stadium Authority Board of Directors recently discussed the ongoing work with MLB concerning the Oakland Athletics' planned $1.5 billion ballpark. Although specific A's items weren't on the agenda for their latest meeting, Stadium Authority Chairman Steve Hill expects these to be addressed in the next meeting in February or March. The community benefits agreement, lease agreement, and a draft of the non-relocation agreement are anticipated topics. These agreements are essential before accessing up to $380 million in public funding and starting construction on the planned 33,000-seat ballpark at the Tropicana hotel site.
Meanwhile, Allegiant Stadium has seen significant attendance since mid-2021, drawing 3.6 million people to various events. This includes 22 Raiders home games with 1.2 million attendees, 26 concerts attracting over 1.1 million fans, and 24 other large ticketed events. The stadium also hosted 373 smaller private events. The most attended event in the third quarter of 2023 was a Raiders versus Pittsburgh Steelers game. Allegiant Stadium has surpassed initial expectations, significantly contributing to Las Vegas tourism, as noted by Hill.
