๐ Retriever Eddie Begins New Chapter as Clark County School Police's Therapy Dog
Eddie, a 6-year-old black Labrador retriever and retired service dog, has recently started his new role as the first "station dog" for the Clark County School District Police Department. Donated by the national nonprofit K9s For Warriors, Eddie is the first therapy dog in Nevada to serve in a public safety agency within a school district. He's known for his ability to sense and soothe stress in people.
Monique Abarca, a social worker with the department, acts as Eddieโs guardian. They have already had impactful experiences together, like helping to de-escalate a situation involving abuse allegations. Eddieโs presence helps children open up and talk more freely.
Previously aiding a military veteran with PTSD on the East Coast, Eddie was returned to K9s For Warriors when his former handler could no longer care for him. Due to his age, Eddie transitioned to the "Station Dog" program, which has placed over 50 therapy dogs at first responder agencies nationwide.
Apart from responding to calls, Eddie will participate in community events and support the department's officers. At home, he enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle with Abarcaโs family and their other pets.
K9s For Warriors, primarily focused on preventing veteran suicides by pairing them with service dogs, started the Station Dog program in 2019. The program also includes retired service dogs like Eddie, who continue to serve the community in different capacities.Subscribe to SummerSouth Insider
๐ Bowl 58 Sparks Surge in Las Vegas Hotel Rates, Exceeding Formula One Levels
Las Vegas hotel room rates for Super Bowl 58 on February 11 are skyrocketing, with an average price of $443.84 per night before taxes and fees, and even higher on the Strip at an average of $856.19. This surge in prices surpasses those seen during Novemberโs Formula One race. A Las Vegas Review-Journal survey of 138 hotels revealed some properties requiring minimum stays and many already sold out.
Prices are influenced by proximity to Allegiant Stadium, where the Super Bowl is set to occur. For instance, Mandalay Bay, near the stadium, is charging $1,100 per night, while Wynn and Encore Las Vegas top the list at $2,500 per night. The least expensive options are off-Strip and downtown properties, with average prices around $280 to $300 per night. However, no rooms under $100 are available in Las Vegas Valley during the Super Bowl weekend.
The Super Bowl's impact is significant, with room rates exceeding those of other major events like the National Finals Rodeo and CES. Amanda Belarmino from UNLV notes that the true success of Las Vegas as a Super Bowl host will be reflected in gaming win numbers, considering the city's history of drawing large crowds for the game.
๐จ Las Vegas Businesses Demand Compensation for Formula One Disruptions
Las Vegas businesses, represented by Lisa Mayo-DeRiso, have brought their concerns to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) regarding the impact of the Formula One race held in November. These businesses, primarily located near the 3.8-mile race course, suffered financial losses due to traffic disruptions and blocked access. Mayo-DeRiso's key demands included the removal of a temporary bridge over Koval Lane on Flamingo Road and the creation of a compensation fund for the affected businesses.
The good news for these businesses is the decision to dismantle the bridge. However, the proposal for a permanent bridge at the same location has raised new concerns. Mayo-DeRiso estimated the losses at around $23 million, potentially increasing due to continued disruptions until the bridge's removal.
LVCVA Board Chairman Jim Gibson has acknowledged the issue but isn't ready to discuss the establishment of a compensation fund. Mayo-DeRiso suggested a model similar to the COVID-19 small business relief fund, with potential contributors being Formula One, Clark County, and the LVCVA.
Other businesses, like Nectar Life and Uber drivers, also experienced significant disruptions. For any compensation fund, applicants would likely need to provide financial records to prove their losses.
Looking ahead, little change is expected for the next F1 race in Las Vegas. The race is scheduled for November 23, 2024, and officials anticipate less complicated track preparations. Despite suggestions to move the race track away from the Strip, this seems unlikely due to significant investments by Liberty Media, F1's local owner, and the race's considerable economic impact on the city.
๐ Brisson Scores First Career Goal, Leads Golden Knights to Victory Over Pittsburgh
In a thrilling match at the T-Mobile Arena, the Golden Knights secured a 3-2 victory against Pittsburgh, thanks to Brendan Brisson's first career goal. The 2020 first-round pick scored the decisive goal with just over 10 minutes left in the third period. The Knights had trailed 2-0 at the beginning of the third but turned the game around with three goals in quick succession. Jonathan Marchessault and Pavel Dorofeyev also scored, fueling the comeback.
Coach Bruce Cassidy commended the team's resilience and offensive push, especially after being down by two goals. Brisson acknowledged the role of the team's veterans in motivating the players during the intermission, which led to their remarkable comeback.
The Knights' win marked their third consecutive victory and they haven't lost a game since Brisson was called up from Henderson. Apart from the game, the event featured memorable moments like Marchessault's son scoring in a youth hockey game and a tribute to former Knight and current Penguin Reilly Smith. The match also had celebrity appearances, including New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and actor Brendan Hunt from "Ted Lasso."
