๐ Taxi and Rideshare Companies Roll Out Incentives for Super Bowl in Las Vegas
In anticipation of the Super Bowl and the influx of tourists in Las Vegas, taxi and rideshare companies are implementing new incentives to encourage drivers to work during this busy period. The Nevada Taxicab Authority has introduced a $10 surcharge for trips around the airport and Strip Corridor, including Allegiant Stadium, from February 9 to 12. This decision follows feedback from drivers and the public on the previously implemented $15 surcharge during the F1 race, which was met with mixed reactions.
Taxi driver "Ovi" mentioned losing about $300 per week leading up to the F1 race and views the $10 Super Bowl surcharge as a partial benefit, as some of this goes to the company. Independent contractors, however, will receive the full amount.
Rideshare companies Uber and Lyft are also planning incentives. Uber will offer surge pricing similar to that during F1, with details yet to be finalized. Lyft is working closely with Las Vegas and NFL officials to ensure a positive experience for both riders and drivers, including increased incentives for drivers the week of the Super Bowl.
Despite these incentives, drivers' reactions are mixed. Some are eager to take advantage of the expected high volume of rides, while others are hesitant due to traffic congestion and unpaid waiting times.
๐ช Costco Targets Buffalo Drive/215 Beltway for New Las Vegas Store
Costco Wholesale is planning to expand its presence in Las Vegas with a new store in the southwest region. According to Clark County records, the company intends to construct a retail building on approximately 22 acres at the southeast corner of Buffalo Drive and the 215 Beltway.
The proposed building, nearly 158,000 square feet in size, will feature a variety of services including a bakery, tire sales, a pharmacy, an optical center, and a hearing aid testing area. It will also boast a gas station and nearly 900 parking spots. The project, which aims to offer over 4,000 products, was initially approved by the Clark County Zoning Commission in September.
Although no building permits have been applied for yet, there is anticipation that the project will proceed in 2024. Matthew Nelson, vice president of J.A. Kennedy Real Estate Company, expressed confidence in the project's progress during a recent commercial real estate panel discussion.
The land targeted for the new Costco is currently owned by the Clark County Department of Aviation. The nature of the deal between Costco and the Department of Aviation, whether it's a sale or lease, is not yet clear.
Once completed, this will be the sixth Costco location in the Las Vegas Valley, further expanding the retail giant's footprint in the area.
๐ Bettors Rejoice and Wince: Mixed Fortunes in NFL Playoff Run-Up
In the recent NFL games, bettors experienced a mix of fortunes, with significant wins on Sunday, but less favorable outcomes on Saturday. Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 27-24, while the Detroit Lions overcame the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23. These results favored bettors, especially with Kansas City covering as a 2ยฝ-point underdog.
The San Francisco 49ers narrowly escaped a loss with a 24-21 win over Green Bay Packers, failing to cover a 10ยฝ-point favorite mark. Conversely, Baltimore Ravens secured a convincing 34-10 victory against Houston, aligning with their 10-point favorite status.
Looking ahead, the AFC championship features the Ravens as 3ยฝ-point home favorites against the Chiefs, with a total consensus of 44ยฝ. In the NFC championship, the 49ers are 7-point home favorites against the Lions, with a total of 51 points.
This upcoming matchup is particularly notable for featuring former NFL MVP quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, and Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs. In addition, the game between the Lions and the 49ers will see a unique quarterback face-off: Detroit's Jared Goff, a former No. 1 overall pick, against San Francisco's Brock Purdy, the last pick in the draft.
๐Brisson's Childhood Dream Realized in Scoring Against Crosby and Malkin
Golden Knights forward Brendan Brisson, an ardent fan of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, scored his first NHL goal against their team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, marking a significant milestone in his budding career. This goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, came during a game where the Knights continued their winning streak, now standing at 27-14-5.
Brisson, who was recently recalled from the American Hockey League affiliate in Henderson, has helped the Knights achieve a 3-0 run since his inclusion. The team is preparing for a four-game road trip, starting with a match against New Jersey.
This achievement is particularly special for Brisson, given his long-time admiration for Crosby and Malkin. He recounted personal anecdotes about Crosby, highlighting their close connection since his childhood. Brisson's father, Pat Brisson, a prominent agent in the hockey world, facilitated this unique bond.
Knights coach Bruce Cassidy and teammate Chandler Stephenson have praised Brisson for his progress and potential. The focus for Brisson now is to maintain his performance and contribute consistently to the teamโs success.
๐ Antonio Pierce Set to Lead Las Vegas Raiders as New Head Coach
The Las Vegas Raiders are finalizing a deal to appoint Antonio Pierce as their new head coach. Pierce, 45, had been serving as the team's interim coach since Halloween, following the dismissal of Josh McDaniels. Under his interim leadership, the Raiders achieved a 5-4 record, contributing to their overall 8-9 season performance.
Pierce, a former Super Bowl champion and team captain, has garnered support from both the players and fans. Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby voiced his approval, citing the team's cohesion and progress under Pierce's guidance.
The appointment of Pierce aligns with NFL hiring regulations, which require the interview of at least two external minority and/or female candidates. The Raiders complied by interviewing former Buffalo defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and former New Orleans Saints co-defensive coordinator Kris Richard.
Once appointed, Pierce will face the challenge of restoring the Raiders' championship legacy, a team that has missed playoffs in 19 of the last 21 seasons. His responsibilities will include decisions on staffing, including the possibility of retaining interim offensive coordinator Bo Hardegree.
Key personnel decisions also loom, particularly regarding the quarterback position and the future of running back Josh Jacobs, who led the NFL in rushing in 2022 but faced a decline in performance and a contract dispute.
