๐ช Retail Expansion: New Michaels and Five Below Locations Coming to Las Vegas
West Las Vegas is set to welcome new retail locations from two popular chains, Michaels and Five Below. Michaels, known for its arts and crafts supplies, is preparing to open a new store in Downtown Summerlin, near Trader Joe's. Targeted to open between May and June this year, this will be the eighth Michaels store in the valley. Spanning just under 20,000 square feet, the store is currently hiring for both full and part-time positions.
Five Below, the bargain retailer offering a range of items from toys to wellness products, most priced at $5 or less, is also expanding its presence in Las Vegas. According to the company's website, two new stores are scheduled to open on February 9. One will be located at the Montecito Marketplace in Centennial Hills, near West Elkhorn Road and North Durango Drive, and the other at Sahara Pavilion North, close to the intersection of West Sahara Avenue and South Decatur Boulevard. These openings will bring the total number of Five Below stores in the valley to seven.
๐ทโโ๏ธ Nevada's Unemployment Rate Steady at 5.4% as Workforce Grows
Nevada's unemployment rate held steady at 5.4% in December, marking the fifth consecutive month at this rate, as per the latest report from the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Despite this stability, Nevada stands out nationally with the highest unemployment rate, surpassing the U.S. average of 3.7%. However, the state also leads in job growth, with a 3.8% increase in its workforce in December.
The report highlights a significant milestone for Nevada's labor force, reaching an all-time high of 1.62 million in December 2023. This growth indicates a robust and expanding job market in the state.
David Schmidt, Chief Economist, noted that Nevada concluded 2023 on a positive note, with job additions continuing at a rapid pace while maintaining stable unemployment levels. A notable achievement is the accommodation and food service industry, which now employs more individuals than pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, seasonal retail hiring saw an uptick, surpassing the figures recorded from 2018 to 2022.
In the Las Vegas region, the job market demonstrated substantial growth, adding 800 jobs, reflecting a 4.1% year-over-year increase.
๐ Golden Knights Triumph with 3-2 Win Against Islanders
The Vegas Golden Knights responded to their coach Bruce Cassidy's critical review with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday at UBS Arena. This win came on the heels of a challenging 6-5 overtime loss against New Jersey.
Goaltender Adin Hill played a pivotal role in snapping the Knights' seven-game road losing streak. Making a comeback from a lower-body injury, Hill recorded 41 saves, marking his first game completion since November 27. His performance drew praise from right wing Jonathan Marchessault, who commended Hill's resilience and skill under pressure.
The win was crucial for the Knights, with Logan Thompson filling in during Hillโs absence. Hill leads the NHL in goals-against average and save percentage, a testament to his importance to the team.
The Knights demonstrated improved defense and created enough offense to secure the win. Sheldon Rempal and Nicolas Roy scored back-to-back in the second period, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead. Jean-Gabriel Pageau narrowed the gap for the Islanders, but Hill's defense ensured no further scoring.
Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo contributed two assists, and Ivan Barbashev opened the scoring for the Knights. The Islanders' Brock Nelson managed to equalize early in the second period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Knights' lead.
The win highlighted several key performances:
First NHL Goal for Rempal: Sheldon Rempal celebrated his first NHL goal and point, a significant milestone in his 14th appearance.
Consistent Performance from Roy: Nicolas Roy continued his impressive streak, contributing significantly in the absence of injured centers.
Roster Moves: The Knights made strategic changes, activating Hill off injured reserve and reassigning Jiri Patera and Daniil Miromanov for further conditioning.
โ Hawaiian Airlines Expands Daily Flights from Las Vegas to Honolulu Starting May 24
Hawaiian Airlines is set to increase its seasonal flight frequency between Las Vegas and Honolulu. Starting May 24, the airline will upgrade its service from four weekly round trips to daily flights between Honolulu International Airport and Harry Reid International Airport. This expansion is part of the airline's broader seasonal increase, which includes additional flights to Boston, Los Angeles, Austin, and Pago Pago in American Samoa.
This increase in flights, running through July 28, marks a significant boost in Hawaiian's offerings, as it will now provide three daily flights connecting Las Vegas with Hawaiiโs largest city. The expansion comes amid Hawaiian Airlines' ongoing merger plans with Alaska Airlines, announced in December.
Hawaiian Airlines faces competition on the Las Vegas-Honolulu route from Southwest Airlines, which also operates a daily round trip. For these routes, Hawaiian utilizes Airbus A330 and Boeing 787 jets, known for their comfort and efficiency.
Brent Overbeek, Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer at Hawaiian Airlines, highlighted the enhancement of travel options and convenience for summer travelers. He also mentioned the introduction of a fourth daily Honolulu-Los Angeles flight, underscoring the growing demand for Hawaiian Airlines in Southern California.
โ Frontier Airlines Joins the Las Vegas-Los Angeles Route with Daily Service
Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low-fare commercial air carrier based in Denver, has announced its entry into the competitive Las Vegas-Los Angeles air travel market. Starting April 10, the airline will begin offering daily round trips between Las Vegas and Los Angeles International Airport.
This new service is part of Frontier's extensive expansion plan, encompassing new routes to and from 38 cities. To promote the Las Vegas-Los Angeles route, Frontier is introducing special one-way promotional fares starting at $19. These fares are available for travel dates in April, May, and June, with a purchase deadline of 9 p.m. Thursday (Las Vegas time). Travel restrictions include specific days of the week and blackout dates.
Josh Flyr, Frontierโs Vice President of Network and Operations Design, emphasized the significance of this expansion. He stated that it's aimed at increasing Frontierโs presence in both underserved and overpriced routes, offering consumers more destinations and frequency choices under the airline's 'Low Fares Done Right' philosophy.
The Las Vegas-Los Angeles route is already heavily served with 196 weekly flights from various airlines, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. This makes it one of the most frequented routes from Harry Reid International Airport.
