✈ Las Vegas Celebrates a Surge in Tourism with 40.8 Million Visitors in 2023

Las Vegas experienced a remarkable resurgence in tourism in 2023, welcoming over 40.8 million visitors, the highest single-year total since the pandemic began in 2020. The city saw a 5.2% increase from 2022 and nearly reached pre-pandemic levels.

In December, nearly 3.4 million visitors were recorded, a 2.7% increase from the previous year. The LVCVA reported a 20% increase in convention and conference attendance, attributing the success to robust tourism and major events like the inaugural Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Analysts confirmed these positive trends, with Las Vegas setting new records for average daily room rates and significant increases in revenue per available room. Hotel occupancy averaged 83.5%, a 4.3% rise from 2022, indicating a strong rebound in the hospitality sector.

The year-end visitation numbers were released during the Vegas Chamber's Preview Las Vegas 2024 event, highlighting the city's ongoing appeal and growth. LVCVA CEO Steve Hill described 2023 as an "epic year," further emphasizing the remarkable success of the city's tourism industry.

🌮 Roberto’s Taco Shop’s Anniversary Bash: 60 Days of Surprises and Specials

Roberto’s Taco Shop, a beloved fixture for UNLV students and Las Vegas residents, is marking its 60th anniversary with 60 days of exciting giveaways that started in December and continue through February. The celebration includes:

  • Giveaways: iPads, Apple Watches, and swag bags filled with branded merchandise are up for grabs during remote radio broadcasts at various stores across the valley.

  • Specials: Food and drink deals from Monday to Thursday, featuring $6.60 carne asada fries on Mondays and $1.59 chicken tacos on Wednesdays.

Founded in 1964 in California by Roberto and Dolores Robledo, the taco shop has grown into a Vegas icon. The first local store near UNLV paved the way for expansion, and now Roberto’s boasts over 80 locations across Nevada, California, and Texas, with nearly 60 in Nevada, all franchise-owned.

Reynaldo Robledo, the founders' son and current CEO, emphasizes the brand's impact on the Latino community in Las Vegas. He sees his father's legacy in providing a tangible path for Latino generations to achieve their American Dream.  Trump Encourages Supporters to Disregard Primary, Attend Caucus

Former President Donald Trump, during a rally in Las Vegas, instructed thousands of attendees to avoid participating in Nevada's Presidential Preference Primary on February 6. Instead, he emphasized the importance of the caucus organized by the state Republican Party on February 8, which he considers the exclusive method for allocating delegates to determine the Republican presidential nominee.

Trump, considered the presumptive Republican nominee, is poised to secure all of Nevada's 26 delegates following victories in Iowa and New Hampshire. He dismissed the primary as "meaningless," focusing on the caucus as the pivotal event. The rally featured speeches from several Nevada conservatives, including state party chairman Michael McDonald and prominent figures like GOP Senate candidates and state legislators.

Trump criticized the primary as benefiting Nikki Haley, his sole challenger for the GOP nomination. He advised supporters that participating in the primary would be futile, as it wouldn't contribute to delegate allocation. Nevada's Governor Joe Lombardo and Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony announced their support for Trump, encouraging participation in the caucus over the primary.

Apart from discussing the caucus, Trump's speech largely focused on immigration and criticisms of President Joe Biden. He expressed strong views on border security and endorsed Texas Governor Greg Abbott's actions regarding the border crisis.

Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, were also active in Nevada, rallying support and engaging with local businesses. Trump underscored the importance of winning in Nevada, a state he lost to Biden in 2020, emphasizing the need for a strong turnout in the caucuses to challenge Biden in the upcoming election. You must be a registered voter to participate in the The Nevada Presidential Caucus. It will take place on February 8th from 5 PM - 7:30 PM, visit here to find you location.

🏒 Vegas Knights' Comeback Cut Short in Detroit: 5-2 Loss

The Vegas Golden Knights' six-game point streak came to an end with a 5-2 loss against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. Despite a brief comeback in the first period, the Knights struggled with power-play opportunities and ultimately fell to Detroit's Joe Veleno, Andre Copp, and two goals from Dylan Larkin, one of which was an empty-netter. Detroit's Moritz Seider contributed with two assists.

The Knights garnered five points from the four-game road trip, with captain Mark Stone acknowledging the need for improvements in their power play. Both Knights' goals resulted from aggressive play in front of the Detroit net, a strategy emphasized by coach Bruce Cassidy. Michael Amadio returned from injury, compensating for the absence of Pavel Dorofeyev.

The local crowd showed enthusiasm for both the Red Wings' victory and the upcoming NFC championship game. Knights' defenseman Alec Martinez and forward Paul Cotter, both with local connections, displayed commendable performances despite the loss. The Knights will regroup during a break until February 6 when they face the Edmonton Oilers.

🏀 UNLV Rebels Rally to Overcome Spartans, 77-65

The UNLV Rebels secured a 77-65 win against the San Jose State Spartans in a game marked by a strong second-half performance. After a challenging start, the Rebels rallied in the second half, showcasing a remarkable turnaround at the Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose, California.

Coach Kevin Kruger praised the team's defensive capabilities, which improved significantly as the game progressed. Keylan Boone led the team with 18 points and six rebounds, while freshman point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. contributed 16 points. Junior guard Jackie Johnson III added a crucial 12 points from the bench.

San Jose State initially led the game with a strong offensive performance, but their momentum faltered in the second half as they missed key field goals. In contrast, the Rebels exhibited an impressive 80% field goal rate and successful three-pointers in the second half.

UNLV's starting lineup saw changes due to injuries, with players like Brooklyn Hicks stepping up effectively in crucial moments. The Rebels will host Fresno State in their next matchup, continuing their season with renewed confidence following this significant win.
