๐Ÿถ Urgent Call for Foster Pet Parents Amid Canine Influenza Outbreak

Courtesy of Aliante Animal Hospital

The Animal Foundation (TAF) is urgently seeking the community's help as it faces an overwhelming influx of animals and a highly contagious canine influenza outbreak. In just the past two weeks, the shelter has welcomed over 900 animals, with 744 currently in its care. The situation has become critical as one dog has already tested positive for the disease, and 11 others are showing symptoms and awaiting test results.

With the facility reaching its capacity, TAF has issued a plea for immediate foster homes to accommodate 50 dogs of any size, older than 6 months, for at least a week. This move is aimed at freeing up much-needed space within the shelter and preventing the further spread of the influenza outbreak.

How to Help:

  • Foster Volunteer Call: The shelter invites interested individuals to step forward as temporary foster parents. This urgent call is part of an effort to manage the current space crisis and care for the animals responsibly.

  • No Appointment Necessary: Those willing to foster can visit the adoptions building at TAF from Saturday to Monday, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., without the need for an appointment.

  • Support Provided: TAF is committed to supporting foster volunteers by providing food, crates, leashes, and any other necessary supplies at no cost.

  • Adoption Option: For those who foster and find themselves unable to part with their new companion, TAF offers the option to formally adopt the dog, waiving the adoption fee.

Location & Additional Information:

The Animal Foundation is located at 655 North Mojave Road, Las Vegas. Potential foster parents are encouraged to expedite the process by filling out a foster application available on the TAF website before their visit.

This situation underscores the community's role in supporting animal welfare organizations during crises. TAF's call for help highlights the pressing need for a collaborative effort to ensure the well-being of vulnerable animals and the staff dedicated to their care.

๐ŸŽฐ Nevada Casinos Face Profit Decline Despite Record Revenues

Nevada's casino industry experienced a notable profit decline in the 2023 fiscal year, despite achieving record-high revenues, according to a detailed report by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The 163-page Nevada Gaming Abstract revealed that while total revenue surged by 8.9% to $29.86 billion, net income plummeted by 21.4% to $3.44 billion due to escalating operational costs, including higher interest rates, rental expenses, and wages.

Key Insights from the Report:

  • Rising Operational Costs: The casino sector faced increased financial pressures with a 23.3% hike in interest expenses, a 69.8% rise in rent costs, and a 17.1% increase in general and administrative expenses. These higher costs have significantly impacted the profit margins of casino companies.

  • Labor Costs and Union Agreements: A significant contributor to the increased expenses was the higher wages and benefits stemming from new contracts with the Culinary Union, which set record pay levels for unionized workers. This has added to the financial strain on casino operations.

  • Revenue Composition Shifts: The report also highlighted a shift in revenue sources, with non-gaming amenities like hotel rooms, food, and beverage services, and entertainment options generating a higher percentage of revenue than casino play. Nongaming revenue hit an all-time high of $18.9 billion, accounting for 63.4% of total revenue.

  • Market Performance Variances: While most Nevada markets surpassed their pre-pandemic levels from the 2019 fiscal year, net income declined in every market except South Lake Tahoe. The Las Vegas Strip, Downtown Las Vegas, the Boulder Strip, and Laughlin all saw changes in net revenue and gaming revenue, reflecting the diverse impacts of the current economic environment on different regions.

  • Statewide and County-Level Impacts: The report provides a detailed analysis of gaming and non-gaming revenues, room occupancy rates, and operational costs across Clark County and its submarkets, offering insight into the economic dynamics of Southern Nevada's casino industry.

Looking Ahead:

Despite the challenges, the Nevada casino industry remains a pivotal sector, contributing significantly to the state's economy through various taxes and supporting government resources. With non-gaming amenities continuing to drive revenue growth, the sector is adapting to changing consumer preferences and economic conditions.

As casinos navigate the complexities of higher operational costs and shifting revenue streams, the industry's resilience and strategic adaptations will be crucial for sustaining growth and profitability in the coming years.

๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽค U2 Pays Tribute to Elvis with Priscilla Presley in Attendance

During a recent U2 performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas, the band paid tribute to Elvis Presley, with Priscilla Presley herself attending the show. Bono acknowledged her presence, honoring the legacy of Elvis as a foundational figure in rock and roll. This moment was part of U2's continued exploration of musical icons and their impact on the genre and culture at large.

Priscilla Presley expressed her admiration for the show, planning to return for another viewing, highlighting the performance's captivating nature. U2's setlist included nods to other artists influenced by Elvis, such as The Beatles and Oasis, emphasizing rock and roll's role as a medium of freedom across various dimensions.

๐Ÿ€ UNLV's Winning Streak Ends with a Close Loss to UNR

In a dramatic showdown at the Thomas & Mack Center, UNLV's bid for a sixth consecutive victory and a fifth straight win over rival UNR fell short, as the Rebels faced a narrow 69-66 defeat. The game, which attracted an audience of 9,517, saw UNLV relinquish an 11-point lead in the second half, culminating in a pivotal four-minute scoring drought.

Key Takeaways from the Game:

  1. Late-Game Timidity Costs Rebels: UNLV's Coach Kevin Kruger pointed to a loss of aggression as the critical factor in the game's closing stages. Despite leading 56-45 with just over nine minutes remaining, UNLV allowed UNR to mount a 10-0 run, ultimately conceding the lead. Kruger lamented the team's shift from their successful strategy, noting an increase in fouls and a decrease in assertiveness.

  2. Dedan Thomas Jr.'s Standout Performance: Freshman point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. shone brightly, scoring a team-high 19 points and providing eight assists. Thomas' efforts were crucial, especially with UNR's effective double-teaming of Kalib Boone, UNLV's second-leading scorer. Despite this, a regrettable moment came when Thomas missed two critical free throws in the game's final seconds.

  3. Impact on Season Standings: The loss had significant implications for UNLV's positioning in the Mountain West Conference. A victory would have placed the Rebels within striking distance of the conference lead. Instead, they find themselves tied for sixth place with UNR, which now holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. This outcome snaps UNLV's overall five-game winning streak and its four-game streak against UNR.

Looking Ahead:

The Rebels are set to face Air Force next, seeking redemption after a heavy loss in their last encounter. Coach Kruger expressed confidence in the team's ability to bounce back, emphasizing the importance of execution in crucial moments. As the season progresses, UNLV aims to refine their late-game strategy and maintain their competitiveness in the Mountain West Conference.

A suspect has been apprehended in connection with an alleged attempt to persuade a child to engage in a sexual act on Thursday.

Irving Malagon, aged 31, was taken into custody on Friday, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.

The incident took place around 2:38 p.m. on Thursday when an 11-year-old was approached by a white male adult driving a black two-door sedan in the 7200 block of Cottonsparrow Street, near North Buffalo Drive and West Elkhorn Road in the far northwest valley.

The male attempted to entice the juvenile into his vehicle while he was inappropriately touching himself, according to the police.

The juvenile escaped unharmed and sought refuge at a nearby relative's home.

Malagon was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of luring a child to engage in a sex act and open and gross lewdness.
