๐ซ๐ธ Meadows School Summer Camp & Activities Expo Returns with Exciting New Signature Camps for Middle Schoolers in Summerlin
The Meadows School Summer Camp & Activities Expo is making a comeback next month to assist families in finding local and national summer camps for kids of all ages. The 20th annual expo will take place in the school's gymnasium, featuring numerous camp exhibitors showcasing both day and overnight camps, both locally and nationally, according to a news release from the school.
The summer camps showcased at the expo offer a wide range of activities, including performing and fine arts, science, technology, and more.
New this year are the Meadows Signature Camps, which will be launched at the expo. These camps are designed for middle school students and offer a multi-week experience in various sports, debate, archeology, and more.
The free expo is open to the public and will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free parking is also available.
Rebecca Staniec, president of the Meadows School Parents Association, said in a statement, "Instead of searching out and researching camps individually, families can easily explore multiple options in one lively, fun location, and do it together." Visit here for more info.
๐ฐ Rio Las Vegas Undergoes Major Renovation with a Nod to Its Iconic Past
The Rio, a hallmark off-Strip property in Las Vegas, is currently undergoing a significant transformation. Dreamscape Companies has initiated a $350 million redevelopment plan aimed at reviving the resort's former glory while infusing it with modern amenities. Since its opening in 1990, the Rio has been known for its vibrant atmosphere and unique offerings, and this renovation seeks to honor that legacy with contemporary enhancements.
Key Highlights of the Renovation:
Comprehensive Update: The renovation encompasses a full refresh of the Rio's 2,500 guest rooms, the 150,000-square-foot casino floor, 220,000-square-foot meeting and convention space, and the pool areas among other facilities.
Early Achievements: Initiatives like the installation of a new OLED marquee, new exterior paint, and LED neon lights curated by Phishโs creative director have already marked the beginning of this transformation. Internally, 1,400 rooms in the Ipanema Tower have been remodeled, alongside updates to the convention space and the introduction of the Canteen Food Hall.
Casino Floor Remodel: Post-Super Bowl, the casino floor's revamp began, with 500 new slot machines already added. Future plans include new carpeting, wall coverings, lighting, furniture, and table games, with efforts to minimize disruption during the renovation.
Hyatt Hotels Partnership: A collaboration with Hyatt Hotels is anticipated to launch in March, aiming to broaden the Rio's appeal to Hyattโs customer base.
Completion Timeline: Most remodeling projects are slated for completion in early fall, with the final touches expected by spring 2025.
Room Rates and Resort Offerings: While an increase in room rates post-renovation was hinted at, the goal remains to offer quality accommodations that cater to a broad audience. Discussions about reviving the iconic Masquerade Show in the Sky or introducing a new free show remain speculative, with a focus on blending nostalgia with modernity.
Dreamscape's founder, Eric Birnbaum, emphasized the intention behind the renovation is to pay homage to the Rio's storied past while making it appealing to today's guests. This initiative is not just about refurbishing a property but about rekindling the essence that made the Rio a beloved destination in Las Vegas.
The Rio's transformation is a testament to the evolving landscape of Las Vegas hospitality, where innovation meets tradition. As the renovation progresses, the anticipation grows among both long-time fans and new visitors eager to experience the renewed charm of this iconic resort.
๐ถ๐จโ๐ค Vegas Entertainers Revive "Follies" in Bold Off-Strip Production
A team of Las Vegas musical-theater enthusiasts is bringing back the classic Broadway musical "Follies," originally conceived by Stephen Sondheim 53 years ago, to a local audience far from its Broadway roots. The ambitious production, led by Tom Michel, David Robinson, and Sean Stephenson, is set to dazzle at Alianteโs Access Showroom, a venue not traditionally known for hosting Broadway shows, with six performances scheduled from April 11-14.
The producers have pulled out all the stops, casting a mix of Broadway veterans and Las Vegas stars to fill the 70-member production troupe. Headlining the cast is Broadway great Andrea McArdle, who famously originated the title role in "Annie" and has since enjoyed a celebrated stage career. The Vegas production also stars local luminaries such as Michelle Johnson, known as Las Vegas' "First Lady of Jazz," and Randal Keith, a veteran of both "Les Misรฉrables" and "Phantom."
"Follies" tells the poignant story of a final reunion at a soon-to-be-demolished theater, bringing together former performers for one last show. The production is notable for its reflection on the past glories of showbiz, infused with both nostalgia and the specter of change, as the theater's demolition looms.
The Vegas production is unique not only for its location but also for the breadth of talent involved, including notable figures such as comic Pete Barbutti, singer Bubba Knight, and opera star Frederica von Stade, alongside a dozen Las Vegas showgirl legends. The 30-piece Jazz Outreach Initiative (JOI) Orchestra will provide live musical accompaniment for each performance.
Proceeds from the show will benefit Las Vegas theatrical productions, with the producers operating under the nonprofit Metropolis Theatricals Las Vegas. Despite the high ticket prices and the unconventional choice of venue, the production team is optimistic, banking on the appeal of Sondheim's work and the cult status of "Follies" to draw audiences.
This revival is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic Broadway in the heart of Las Vegas, a city known for its entertainment prowess but not traditionally as a hub for Broadway musicals. It's a bold venture that seeks to marry the legacy of Broadway with the vibrant local entertainment scene off the Strip.
๐ Golden Knights Secure Season Sweep Against Sharks with Morelli's Stellar Debut
In a memorable match on Monday at SAP Center, the Vegas Golden Knights clinched a 4-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks, marking a season sweep against their Pacific Division rivals. Mason Morelli, making his first NHL appearance at 28, notably contributed with a goal and an assist, though he stopped short of engaging in a fight, missing out on what could have been a legendary Gordie Howe hat trick debut as per coach Bruce Cassidy's lighthearted commentary.
The game initially seemed to favor the Sharks as they dominated the offensive zone, but the Knights quickly turned the tide. A pivotal moment came just 2:28 into the first period when Michael Amadio, assisted by Zach Whitecloud, scored on a breakaway, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Logan Thompson, back in goal for the Knights after a brief hiatus, showcased a stellar performance by stopping all 29 shots he faced, securing his first shutout of the season.
William Karlsson and Keegan Kolesar also scored for the Knights, with defenseman Alec Martinez providing crucial assists, emphasizing the team's depth and collaborative effort. Morelli's debut goal, alongside his significant contribution throughout the game, earned him a spot as the third player in franchise history to score in their NHL debut.
The victory not only highlighted the Knights' strategic play and resilience but also underscored the potential impact of new talent like Morelli, who after playing 278 games in the AHL and ECHL, seized his NHL opportunity with notable skill and determination.
Key Takeaways from the Victory:
Mason Morelli's Impressive Debut: Morelli's goal and assist in his first NHL game underscored his potential and the depth of talent within the Golden Knights' roster.
Goalie Logan Thompson's Shutout: Returning to the ice after a break, Thompson delivered an impeccable performance, ensuring the Sharks were kept at bay throughout the game.
A Collective Team Effort: Contributions from across the board, especially the team's defensive strategies and the offensive support from the bottom six, played a significant role in the comprehensive win.
The Knights look forward to their next challenge against the Nashville Predators, potentially strengthened by the return of defenseman Shea Theodore from injury. The team's cohesive performance and strategic execution underpin their readiness for upcoming encounters.
