☎ The Resilience of Landlines in a Digital Age: A Reflection from Recent AT&T Outage
During a recent AT&T network outage, the spotlight was unexpectedly thrown back on a technology many considered obsolete: the landline telephone. Bernice Hudson, a 69-year-old resident of Alexandria, Virginia, found solace in her landline when her cellphone service was disrupted. This incident underscores a broader conversation about the shifting telecommunications landscape in the United States, where landlines have increasingly become an emblem of the past.
As of 2022, approximately 73 percent of American adults lived in households that were exclusively reliant on wireless phones, a stark contrast to the early 2000s when less than 3 percent were wireless-only, and over 95 percent had landlines. This dramatic shift, primarily driven by the advent of smartphones and broadband internet, has relegated landline services to the margins of the telecom industry.
However, the recent network outage served as a reminder of the inherent value of landlines. The San Francisco Fire Department even recommended using landlines to reach emergency services during the disruption. Despite their dwindling presence, landlines still hold a place in some households, particularly among the older population who find comfort and reliability in the technology they grew up with.
The rapid embrace of mobile phones and the consequent decline of landlines highlight society's tendency to quickly adopt new technologies without fully considering potential drawbacks. Incidents like the AT&T outage prompt questions about our preparedness for more significant disruptions in a world where landlines are increasingly rare.
Yet, for many, the convenience and ubiquity of mobile communication outweigh the sporadic benefits of maintaining a landline, suggesting that a significant resurgence of landlines is unlikely. Nonetheless, for individuals like Bernice Hudson and others who maintain a landline, these moments of outage provide vindication for their choice, emphasizing the importance of diversity in our communication infrastructure.
🎰 Tripadvisor Inc. Wins Approval to Move Incorporation to Nevada, Despite Shareholder Concerns
In a significant legal ruling on Tuesday, Chancery Court Judge J. Travis Laster allowed Tripadvisor Inc. to proceed with its plan to relocate its incorporation from Delaware to Nevada, marking another instance of companies shifting their legal domicile to the latter state, noted for its favorable conditions for corporations and their executives. However, the court has permitted the continuation of the lawsuit brought by minority shareholders, acknowledging the potential need for monetary damages due to concerns over reduced litigation rights in Nevada compared to Delaware.
Minority shareholders had initiated legal action in November 2023, arguing that the move to Nevada would disadvantage them by limiting their litigation rights while extending greater protections to company directors and executives, such as Tripadvisor's chairman, Greg Maffei. Maffei, who also serves as the CEO of Liberty Media, the parent company of Formula One, finds himself at the center of the controversy.
The lawsuit highlights a broader debate on corporate governance, particularly regarding the rights of minority shareholders when a company decides to relocate its legal home. Adam Chodorow, a tax law professor at Arizona State University, pointed out the core issue at hand: whether relocating from Delaware, where a vast majority of Fortune 500 companies are registered, constitutes a breach of duty to minority shareholders.
The case emerges amidst a trend of companies, including those led by notable billionaires like Elon Musk, seeking to change their state of incorporation to locales perceived as more business-friendly, such as Nevada and Texas. Musk recently moved Neuralink's legal domicile to Nevada and has expressed interest in relocating Tesla to Texas, following a dispute over his compensation package in Delaware.
As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome of Tripadvisor's move and its implications for corporate governance and shareholder rights will be closely watched, reflecting broader shifts in the landscape of American corporate law.
🏀 Noah Westbrook's Heroic Return Fuels Bishop Gorman's State Championship Victory
In a dramatic and closely contested Class 5A state championship game, Bishop Gorman High School emerged victorious, thanks to the remarkable efforts of senior forward Noah Westbrook, who played a pivotal role in securing the win against Coronado with a final score of 63-60. After facing significant challenges, including a canceled season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a serious injury, Westbrook made a triumphant return to the court this year, contributing significantly to the team's success.
Westbrook's decisive play, forcing a turnover in the game's final moments, highlighted his impact and underscored his importance to the team. Leading Gorman with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Westbrook's performance was a testament to his resilience and dedication. The victory marked Gorman's 23rd state title, their first since 2020, and added another chapter to the school's storied basketball history.
The game was a nail-biter, with Coronado rallying in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 60, only for Gorman to pull ahead in the final seconds. Contributions from players like senior Ryder Elisaldez and freshman Ilan Nikolov, who each added 11 points, showcased the team's depth and collective effort. Coach Grant Rice praised the team's unity and dedication, attributing the win to a group effort rather than individual performances.
The win not only celebrates Gorman's return to the top of Nevada high school basketball but also the personal victory of Westbrook and his teammates, who overcame adversity and skepticism to prove their mettle. This championship game will be remembered not just for the score but for the stories of perseverance and team spirit that led to this momentous win.
