๐ซ 20th Annual Meadows School Summer Camp Expo Set to Enrich Children's Summer Plans
The Meadows School Summer Camp & Activities Expo is set to return next month, marking its 20th anniversary. Hosted in the gymnasium of the Summerlin school, the expo aims to connect families with a wide range of summer camp options for children of all ages. Attendees can expect to find exhibitors from both local and national camps, offering day and overnight stays. These camps cover a diverse array of activities, including performing and fine arts, science, and technology.
A new addition to this year's expo is the launch of the Meadows Signature Camps, specifically designed for middle school students. These camps will provide a multi-week experience focusing on various interests such as sports, debate, archeology, and more.
The expo, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free parking available. Rebecca Staniec, president of the Meadows School Parents Association, highlighted the convenience of the expo, allowing families to explore numerous camp options in a single, engaging location. For those interested in learning more, information is available on the Meadows School website.
๐ฐ Nevada Gaming Sector Surpasses $1 Billion Mark for 35th Consecutive Month
Nevada's gaming industry saw a slight increase of 0.5 percent in its January winnings, reaching $1.27 billion, which is particularly notable given that January 2023 had set a record for the first month of the year. The Las Vegas Strip experienced a 3.8 percent decline from its previous record January, marking its first drop in winnings since June. This dip was attributed to a shift in visitor patterns, with some opting to visit in February to coincide with the Super Bowl's debut in Las Vegas and the Chinese New Year celebrations.
In contrast, the rest of Clark County saw a significant 10.9 percent increase in winnings, largely due to the opening of Durango in December. Reno and Washoe County also experienced substantial increases in gaming wins, attributed to timing factors and a rebound from a weak January 2023 due to bad weather.
This period marks the 35th consecutive month where gaming wins exceeded $1 billion. Special events, including a Las Vegas Raiders home game, Adele's performances, U2's residency, and major trade shows like CES, contributed to the influx of visitors and gaming activity. Despite mixed results in game wins and holds on the Strip, overall tax collections from gaming are up 5.8 percent for the fiscal year, indicating a healthy state for Nevada's gaming sector.
๐ Golden Knights' Rally Falls Short in 5-4 Loss to Bruins at TD Garden
The Golden Knights faced a tough loss against the Boston Bruins, ending with a score of 5-4 in favor of Boston at TD Garden. Despite a valiant comeback attempt, including erasing a three-goal deficit and scoring a short-handed goal by Chandler Stephenson, the Knights fell short when Mason Lohrei scored a power-play goal for the Bruins with just 4:37 left on the clock. The Knights' effort to rally from a 3-0 disadvantage after the first period showcased their resilience, with goals from Paul Cotter, Alex Pietrangelo, Michael Amadio, and Stephenson before ultimately succumbing to Boston's late-game advantage.
The loss highlighted ongoing issues with the Knights' power play performance and the absence of key players Jack Eichel and Mark Stone. Coach Bruce Cassidy, on his return to TD Garden with a Stanley Cup championship under his belt, reflected on his tenure with the Bruins and the significance of winning the championship with the Knights. Meanwhile, there's anticipation around Eichel's potential return to the lineup during the ongoing road trip, following his recovery from surgery for a lower-body injury.
๐ฒ Las Vegas Visitation Rises in January, Boosted by Major Conventions
Las Vegas experienced a modest increase in visitation in January, primarily driven by a surge in convention traffic. The city hosted major events like CES, World of Concrete, and the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade shows, drawing 557,200 attendees and boosting overall visitation to 3.4 million, a 3.3 percent rise from January 2023. Despite the opening of new hotels like Durango and Fontainebleau in December, which expanded room inventory, hotel and motel occupancy rates remained steady at 78.9 percent, only slightly down by 0.2 percentage points from the previous year. The average daily room rate was $191.23, nearly unchanged from January 2023.
Weekend occupancy rates fell to 83.6 percent due to the CES trade show moving to midweek dates, while midweek occupancy saw a slight increase. Strip room rates slightly decreased, and downtown Las Vegas rates also saw a decline. Meanwhile, passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport and highway traffic into Las Vegas both experienced minor decreases. However, Laughlin reported a 2.4 percent increase in visitation. Looking ahead, February's visitation numbers are anticipated to be near record levels due to the city hosting Super Bowl 58, the Chinese New Year, and an extra day in the month because of Leap Year.
๐ฒ Las Vegas Convention Center to Host Major Spring Job Fair Event
Southern Nevada job seekers have the opportunity to meet with over 120 employers at the upcoming Spring Job Fair, scheduled for March 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall. Hosted by Clark County in collaboration with the EmployNV Business Hub, this annual event aims to facilitate on-the-spot hiring and job offers pending background checks. Commissioner Jim Gibson encourages attendees to approach the fair as they would a multi-employer interview, emphasizing that every employer present is looking to hire. Notable employers include the Rio hotel-casino, Nevada Barricade and Sign Co., Maverik, The Smith Center, Tao Group Hospitality, Fontainebleau hotel-casino, and Link Technologies. Job seekers can register in advance, upload their resumes for employer previews, and access several on-site resources such as free child care for specific ages, career coaching, and career exploration tools.
