🌤 Summerlin South, Las Vegas Weather

Severe Blizzard Causes Widespread Disruptions in Nevada and California

A severe winter blizzard wreaked havoc across California and Nevada, delivering winds up to 71 mph, toppling trees, scattering debris, damaging buildings, and leading to widespread power outages, including for visiting First Lady Jill Biden. Originating from the Pacific Ocean coast on Thursday, the storm brought significant snowfall, with predictions of 10-12 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada before its conclusion.

In Nevada, around 6,000 customers remained without electricity by late Saturday, a decrease from the 34,000 reported earlier. The storm caused initial outages in west Las Vegas and the Anthem area of Henderson, affecting thousands. NV Energy mobilized a large workforce to restore power, anticipating that winds would subside by late evening.

The blizzard also impacted air travel, with 519 flights delayed and 65 canceled at Harry Reid International Airport. Commercial areas like the Fashion Show Mall on the Strip experienced power cuts, affecting operations. Moreover, the storm led to the temporary closure of Main Street downtown due to damage to the California Hotel's roof.

The National Weather Service noted that the wind gusts were among the strongest recorded in the valley since 1985, with Angel Peak experiencing an 88 mph gust. Despite the challenging conditions, the weather is expected to improve slightly on Sunday, with continued warnings for gusty winds but a sunny forecast.

This storm marks the most significant of the season, especially for the Sierra Nevada, where intense snowfall and winds over 100 mph created perilous conditions, shutting down a portion of Interstate-80 in California.

🏒 Golden Knights Suffer Heavy Loss to Sabres Amid Defensive Struggles

The Golden Knights faced a challenging game against the Sabres, resulting in a 7-2 loss at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. Despite a rallying effort with two goals, the Knights could not overcome a tie-breaking goal late in the second period, followed by four more goals conceded in the third period. Coach Bruce Cassidy criticized the team for self-inflicted errors and a lack of competition, marking a continuation of the team's recent struggles with managing the puck and defensive play.

This loss is part of a troubling pattern for the Knights, with the team allowing seven goals twice in the past five games and at least five goals four times in the past six games, leading to a 2-6-1 record in their last nine games. Cassidy emphasized that mistakes were costing the team, pointing out the need for better play from the defense and goalkeepers.

The game saw some positives, with Brendan Brisson scoring on the power play, and Logan Thompson making key saves despite the overall defeat. However, the team's defensive issues, particularly in breaking out of the zone, allowed the Sabres to dominate offensively.

As the Knights aim to recover from this setback, Cassidy's focus remains on improving puck management and defensive execution to prevent such losses in the future.
