๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ How Nevadans Can Combat High Grocery Prices Through SNAP

Nevada residents are currently facing significantly high grocery prices, ranking among the highest in the United States. This surge in prices is putting financial strain on many families across the state. However, there is potential relief available through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a federally funded initiative designed to assist eligible individuals and families in purchasing food.

As of now, around 504,000 Nevadans benefit from SNAP, according to data from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. With the federal government spending $119.4 billion on SNAP in fiscal year 2022, the program represents a crucial support system for those in need. For fiscal year 2025, which spans from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, Nevada's share of administrative costs for SNAP is estimated at approximately $29.5 million.

Eligibility for SNAP:

  • Income Requirements: Eligible parties include low-income individuals, part-time workers, recipients of other public assistance, the elderly, disabled, or homeless. Eligibility is partly determined by a householdโ€™s gross (pre-tax) and net (post-tax) income, which must be at or below 130% and 100% of the poverty line, respectively.

  • Asset Limits: Households generally must have assets worth $2,750 or less, though this limit increases to $4,250 for households with a person over 60 or someone with a disability.

  • Work Requirements: Adults aged 18-50 without dependents must work at least 20 hours per week or meet other specified work requirements.

Applying for SNAP:

Applications for SNAP can be submitted online or in person at local welfare offices. The process requires information such as Social Security numbers, income, and work history of all household members. Following an application submission, an interview will be conducted to determine eligibility.

Benefits and Use:

  • Timing: Eligible recipients can expect to receive benefits on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card within 30 days of application. In urgent cases, expedited processing may be available within a week.

  • Amount: Benefit amounts are based on federal estimates of food and meal preparation costs, varying by household size and income. For instance, a one-person household might receive up to $291, while a four-person household could get up to $973 monthly.

  • Usage: The EBT card, functioning like a debit card, allows purchases of most food items except for alcohol, medicines, hot foods at the point of sale, and non-food items like pet food or cleaning supplies.

Nevadans struggling with the current high grocery prices are encouraged to explore SNAP benefits as a viable option to alleviate some of their financial burdens related to food expenses. To apply for the SNAP program, visit here.

๐Ÿ’ Vegas Strengthens Roster with Acquisition of Sharks' Tomas Hertl Before Trade Deadline

In a thrilling last-minute trade maneuver before the NHL trade deadline, the Vegas Golden Knights have successfully acquired center Tomas Hertl from the San Jose Sharks, General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced. Hertl, a key figure in the intense rivalry between the two teams, has a record of 484 points in 712 games, all with the Sharks, including a memorable performance in the 2019 Western Conference quarterfinals.

McCrimmon expressed high regard for Hertl, highlighting his successful history against the Knights and the anticipation of his contribution to the team. "Heโ€™s been a player weโ€™ve had tremendous regard for...heโ€™s going to be a real good fit for us," McCrimmon stated.

Hertl's acquisition follows the Golden Knights' recent additions of right wing Anthony Mantha and defenseman Noah Hanifin, marking a significant strengthening of the team's lineup. However, Hertl, currently on injured reserve due to a knee surgery, will miss the upcoming game against the Detroit Red Wings at T-Mobile Arena.

Despite his injury, McCrimmon is optimistic about Hertl's return before the end of the regular season, contingent on further medical evaluation. The trade terms included the Knights' 2025 first-round pick and center prospect David Edstrom, with the Sharks retaining approximately 17 percent of Hertl's salary for the duration of his contract through the 2029-30 season.

This strategic move demonstrates the Golden Knights' commitment to bolstering their roster, showcasing a willingness to negotiate complex deals to secure top talent. McCrimmon credited former Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland for providing a positive scouting report on Hertl, emphasizing his physical strength and elite skills that are expected to complement the team's current lineup.

โ›ฝ National and Nevada Gas Prices Surge with Seasonal Switch to Summer Blend Fuels

Gasoline prices across the United States are experiencing a notable increase, attributed to the annual transition to summer blend fuels, which are designed to reduce emissions during warmer months. The national average price for a gallon of gas has risen approximately 7 cents this week, with an overall increase of about 25 cents over the past month. States like Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas are seeing the most significant hikes, with prices climbing around 25 cents more per gallon compared to last week.

The demand for gasoline is climbing as gas stations switch to these more expensive summer blends. Concurrently, the price of crude oil, now around $80 a barrel, is contributing to the rising fuel costs, as reported by the Energy Information Administration.

In Nevada, the impact of these factors is evident, with the current average gas price reaching $4.10 per gallon, marking a 10-cent increase from the previous week. Despite this short-term rise, the year-on-year comparison shows a decrease of 24 cents per gallon. The record high for gas prices in Nevada was $5.67 on June 16, 2022.

Diesel prices in Nevada have remained stable over the past week at $4.25 per gallon but have seen a decrease of 45 cents compared to the previous year. The historical peak for diesel prices was $6.04 on June 18, 2022.

The nationwide picture shows California leading with the highest gas prices at $4.87 per gallon, followed by Hawaii at $4.72, and Washington at $4.18. On the other end of the spectrum, the states with the least expensive gas include Texas and Mississippi, both at $2.94, and Colorado at $3.01.

โŽ Bipartisan Support Grows for Legislation to Potentially Ban TikTok in the U.S

A bill targeting the potential ban of the TikTok app in the United States is rapidly advancing in the House, garnering support from lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson. The bill, which passed unanimously in a committee vote (50-0), could soon be up for a full House vote. The proposed legislation requires ByteDance Ltd., TikTok's Beijing-based parent company, to divest the app within 180 days or face prohibition in the U.S. It also allows the executive branch to ban apps owned by foreign adversaries posing national security threats.

The White House has contributed to drafting the bill, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noting it still requires adjustments for President Joe Biden's endorsement. Critics, including TikTok, argue the bill infringes on free speech, affecting 170 million American users and 5 million small businesses that rely on the platform. TikTok has countered allegations of sharing user data with the Chinese government and spreading misinformation beneficial to Beijing.

Former President Donald Trump previously attempted to ban TikTok, which was blocked by courts for violating free speech and due process rights. The bill, authored by Rep. Mike Gallagher, aims to force a change in TikTok's ownership rather than outright banning it. TikTok has mobilized its user base to protest the bill, leading to an inundation of calls to lawmakers' offices.

Concerns about TikTok include its potential as a Chinese government propaganda tool and ByteDance's investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice for surveilling American journalists. TikTok promises to isolate U.S. user data through Oracle servers and create a separate entity for data management, overseen by external monitors. The ACLU and other free speech advocates have urged lawmakers to reject the bill, citing free speech concerns. Meanwhile, the Biden administration maintains a presence on TikTok to engage young voters, despite ongoing security discussions.
