๐ฉโ๐๐จโ๐๐จ Art Meets Technology: Las Vegas Students Design for the Sphere's Exosphere
Clark County School District and UNLV students are poised for a unique opportunity to showcase their art on a grand scale through the Sphere XO Student Design Challenge, announced by Sphere Entertainment Co. The challenge, which is open to over 100,000 students across various educational levels, invites participants to submit artwork with a Fourth of July theme. Winners will have the rare honor of their creations being displayed on the Sphere's exosphere, marking a significant contribution to the blending of art and technology in public spaces.
In a significant gesture of support to local education, Sphere Entertainment will also donate $10,000 to the art program of the winning students' schools. This initiative aims to encourage and nurture artistic talent within the Las Vegas community, offering a platform for young artists to gain widespread recognition for their work.
The selection process will involve both public voting and the expertise of professional artists who have previously contributed to the exosphere's design, such as Refik Anadol and Michela Picchi. This ensures a balanced approach in identifying the most compelling submissions that resonate with both the general public and the artistic community.
The contest is structured to engage students at various education levels, from elementary through college, with a focus on promoting arts education and the integration of digital design skills. The Sphere XO Student Design Challenge represents a pioneering effort to use the venue's cutting-edge technology as an educational tool, bridging the gap between traditional art forms and digital innovation.
James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, emphasized the challenge as a means to inspire the future generation by showcasing what can be achieved through the convergence of art and science. This sentiment is echoed by educational leaders, who view the Sphere as a novel canvas that can play a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant arts culture within the community.
As the Sphere gears up to celebrate the first anniversary of its initial illumination with this artistic tribute on July 4, the challenge underscores the importance of arts education in public schools and the ongoing efforts to support and enrich local communities through creative expression.
๐จ Las Vegas 18b Arts District: Where Culture Meets Commerce
The Las Vegas 18b Arts District, a burgeoning hub for creativity and commerce just south of downtown, is defined by its distinct geographical boundaries. Named for its original concept of encompassing 18 blocks, the area known as 18b has become a cultural cornerstone, despite some businesses outside its technical borders identifying with the Arts District.
Here's a concise outline of the Arts District's official boundaries as set by the city of Las Vegas:
Northern Border: Hoover Avenue, stretching between Commerce Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.
Southern Border: Extends just beyond Colorado Avenue, from Commerce to 4th Street.
Western Border: Commerce Street, running between Colorado Avenue and Hoover Avenue.
Eastern Border: Las Vegas Boulevard, from Hoover to Charleston Boulevard, then shifting to 4th Street south of Charleston, and extending down to Colorado Avenue.
It's worth noting that while these boundaries define the 18b Arts District, the 18b Arts District Association recognizes businesses located outside these limits on its website, reflecting the area's inclusive spirit and the broad influence of the Arts District on the surrounding community.
๐ฐ Vegas Stronger: How the City Turned a Pandemic Crisis into a Record-Breaking Rebound
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to Las Vegas, a city renowned for its bustling casinos and vibrant nightlife. In a drastic move to curb the virus's spread, then-Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered a shutdown of casinos and other nonessential businesses in March 2020, leading to a 78-day closure. This period saw the Nevada Gaming Control Board estimating a significant financial hit, with 219 major casinos losing $6.2 billion in revenue, marking a 25.2% decline from the previous year. The shutdown resulted in the loss of 26,140 jobs from a workforce of 162,066, catapulting the unemployment rate to a staggering 33.4%.
The impact of the closure was profound, with eerie emptiness along the Las Vegas Strip and a palpable sense of loss. Despite this, the decision was met with mixed reactions, highlighting the tension between public health concerns and economic repercussions. The pandemic's effects were not just economic; several properties faced permanent closure, while others, like MGM, navigated through by selling real estate beneath their resorts.
In the face of adversity, Las Vegas demonstrated remarkable resilience. By June 2020, casinos began to reopen, signaling a slow return to normalcy. The years following the shutdown saw a record-breaking rebound in gaming revenue, with Nevada casinos recording three consecutive years of revenue surpassing pre-COVID figures, culminating in $15.5 billion in 2023.
The pandemic also sparked innovation within the resort industry and beyond. Businesses adapted to new operational efficiencies, and unions negotiated historic contracts, emphasizing the health and safety of employees and guests. Moreover, the introduction of new attractions and the embrace of professional sports helped reposition Las Vegas as a premier destination for entertainment and social interaction.
Las Vegas' journey through the pandemic underscores the city's adaptability and resilience, proving that even in the face of global crises, it can rebound stronger and more vibrant than ever.
๐ฉ๐ Lady Rebels Secure NCAA Tournament Spot with Mountain West Championship Win
In a stunning display of resilience and skill, the UNLV women's basketball team clinched its third consecutive Mountain West tournament championship, defeating San Diego State with a convincing 66-49 victory. This win not only secured their title but also guaranteed their third successive NCAA Tournament appearance, a testament to their dominance in college basketball.
Senior center and conference player of the year, Desi-Rae Young, played a pivotal role in this triumph. In a critical moment less than a minute from the end, Young's steal and contested layup, despite causing her brief pain, encapsulated the determination that has characterized the Lady Rebels' season. Young led the scoring with 18 points and contributed 10 rebounds, underlining her importance to the team.
UNLV's victory was not just a showcase of individual brilliance but a team effort. Contributions came from across the roster, including junior point guard Kiara Jackson, who added 14 points and seven assists, and fifth-year guard Ashley Scoggin, who scored 13 points. Junior forward Alyssa Brown, named the conference tournament MVP, added 11 points, emphasizing the depth and versatility of the squad.
The game was tightly contested in the first half, with neither team able to establish a significant lead. However, UNLV pulled away in the third quarter with a decisive 12-0 run, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive solidity. San Diego State fought valiantly but was unable to overcome UNLV's lead, which was further extended in the fourth quarter.
This victory is a remarkable achievement for UNLV coach Lindy La Rocque, who has transformed the Lady Rebels into a powerhouse in her tenure, marking a significant turnaround from a period when NCAA Tournament appearances were rare for the team. The win also cements the Lady Rebels' status as a dominant force in Mountain West women's basketball, achieving their third three-peat in the conference's history.
As UNLV looks forward to the NCAA Tournament, their performance in the Mountain West tournament has set a high bar. Their blend of tactical nous, team cohesion, and individual talent makes them a formidable opponent, eager to extend their successful run on the national stage.
