📺 America's Got Talent' Live Show Closure Leads to Mass Layoffs
The curtain is coming down on "America's Got Talent Presents Superstars Live!" at Luxor Theater, leading to significant job losses. A total of 65 cast and crew members are set to be laid off due to the show's closure on May 11. Among those affected, 37 are employees of Cirque du Soleil's The Works Entertainment, notified through a WARN Act notice issued by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) on Tuesday.
The WARN Act ensures workers receive advance notice in the event of mass layoffs, highlighting the serious impact of the show's ending. The layoffs span a variety of roles, including performers, carpenters, dressers, audio and video technicians, ushers, and concession-merchandise staff, affecting both Cirque and MGM Resorts International employees.
The closure of "AGT Superstars" not only marks a significant shift for those directly involved but might also signal the end of production shows at the Luxor Theater, as MGM Resorts reviews its entertainment strategy following the show's 2½-year run and the short-lived tenure of its predecessor, "R.U.N."
In brighter news, Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas celebrated its 20th anniversary with a lively event attended by Mayor Carolyn Goodman and various entertainers, showcasing the enduring appeal of non-traditional entertainment in Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, David Saxe Productions is developing 11 new shows at the V Theater, signaling a continued interest in revitalizing the city's entertainment offerings despite the challenges faced by other venues.
The closure of Ray's Comedy World, another entertainment venue, underscores the difficulties in balancing unique concepts with operational realities, highlighting the ever-changing landscape of Las Vegas entertainment.
👩⚕️👨⚕️ UNLV Medical Students Discover Residency Destinations on Match Day
On Match Day, a pivotal event in the medical education calendar, UNLV's Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine revealed where its class of 2024 will embark on their residency training. This significant step in their medical careers determines the location and focus of their training for the next three to seven years.
The ceremony showcased the future paths for 61 medical students, who were matched to residency programs across 18 different states. Notably, over half of the students, accounting for 57%, will remain within Nevada for their residencies. They've been placed in prestigious programs including those at the Valley Health System, Sunrise Health, and UNLV's own program at University Medical Center, among other locations in Southern Nevada.
Dr. Marc Kahn, Dean of the Medical School and Vice President for Health Affairs at UNLV, took the opportunity to address the students. He emphasized the medical school's foundational goal: to cultivate a generation of doctors dedicated to serving Nevada—a state that ranks between 45th and 49th in every medical specialty. Dr. Kahn encouraged those students heading out of state for their residencies to consider returning to Nevada afterwards to help address this critical need for medical professionals.
The distribution of specialties among the matched students was diverse, with 31% entering primary care. Other notable specialties chosen by the class of 2024 included psychiatry (14.8%), anesthesiology (9.8%), and emergency medicine (8.2%), highlighting a broad spectrum of interests and skills among the future doctors.
✈ Southwest Airlines to Reduce Flights Due to Boeing Delays
Southwest Airlines, the busiest commercial air carrier at Harry Reid International Airport, is poised to scale back its flight operations later this year. This decision stems from an unexpected shortfall in aircraft deliveries from Boeing Co., as disclosed in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing by the Dallas-based airline.
Originally, Southwest anticipated the addition of 58 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets in 2024. However, Boeing has now adjusted this figure down to 46, citing production delays. Additionally, the airline will not receive any of the 737 Max 7 models it expected this year. These setbacks are part of a broader issue affecting Boeing, which has faced challenges including a quality control crisis highlighted by a door plug incident on an Alaska Airlines flight earlier this year.
This reduction in new aircraft will inevitably lead to decreased capacity at some airports, though Southwest has not specified which locations will be affected. The airline, which transported 20.9 million passengers to and from Reid International in 2023, accounting for 36.2% of the airport's total passenger traffic, is now reevaluating its financial forecasts and capacity plans for 2024.
Despite these challenges, Southwest remains a major player at Reid International, operating as its second-busiest airport with an average of 220 daily flights across 64 destinations. The specific impact of the flight reductions on the Las Vegas airport and other locations remains to be seen, as Southwest continues to assess its operational strategy in light of the delivery delays.
🌎 U2's Final Sphere Show Celebrates St. Patrick's with Sirius XM Stream
U2 is marking St. Patrick's Day with a special broadcast, dubbed "A St. Patrick’s Day Surprise," featuring the last performance of their "U2: UV Achtung Baby" show at the Sphere. This performance, held on March 2, will be streamed on U2 X-radio (Sirius XM Channel 32) at 5 p.m. Pacific time on Sunday. The broadcast will kick off with an exclusive interview with the band, recorded at Zoo Station at The Venetian at 4 p.m.
The final show was a memorable affair, featuring special moments such as Daniel Lanois, the producer behind “Achtung Baby,” joining the band for a performance of “One.” Additionally, Neil Finn of Crowded House contributed digitally with a duet of “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The 40-night stand concluded with “40,” a song not performed live by the band since November 2015.
A significant highlight from U2's last evening was receiving the Key to the Las Vegas Strip, presented by Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, a ceremonial accolade that came to fruition after initial challenges in organizing the presentation. The event marks a notable moment in U2's history with Las Vegas, potentially serving as the cover shot for a future “U2: Live at The Sphere” release.
In other entertainment news, Donny Osmond shared a poignant memory of his friendship with Michael Jackson during the recording of “The Naked Lunch” podcast at Harrah’s Showroom. He recounted a spontaneous late-night taco run with Jackson after the 1974 American Music Awards, highlighting a simpler time in their lives.
Looking forward, there's anticipation for major announcements in the Las Vegas entertainment scene, including a potential continuation of Donny Osmond's performances at Harrah’s Showroom in 2025 and an upcoming announcement from a major rock band about a significant venue.
