๐ŸŽฅ Howard Hughes Holdings and Sony to Create 10,000 Jobs with New Summerlin Studio

Howard Hughes Holdings, in partnership with Sony Entertainment, has received approval from the Clark County Zoning Commission for a monumental $1.8 billion movie studio and mixed-use development project in Summerlin, West Las Vegas. This ambitious venture is expected to generate 10,000 jobs, marking a significant economic boost for the area.

The inception of this project traces back to an inspiration Howard Hughes Holdings CEO David Oโ€™Reilly found in a Las Vegas Review-Journal article featuring actor Mark Wahlberg's vision for a Las Vegas movie studio. This spark of interest quickly evolved into a collaborative effort with Sony Pictures Entertainment, aimed at establishing a new commercial hub within Summerlin.

Slated for development along Town Center Drive, near the 215 Beltway, the projectโ€”dubbed Summerlin Production Studiosโ€”will span 10 buildings and approximately 500,000 square feet of space dedicated to film production. Additionally, the mixed-use component will introduce 100,000 square feet of retail, dining, and office spaces, an emergency room facility, and a satellite office for Clark County administration, complementing an existing fire station.

The development aims not only to bolster the local economy with high-paying jobs, averaging around $100,000 annually and union-backed, but also to cater to the evolving landscape of movie production, which is gradually shifting from its traditional California base. This move is anticipated to bring a vibrant cinematic community to Summerlin, with regular sightings of movie stars and industry professionals.

With plans to enhance Nevada's film tax credit program in collaboration with state authorities, Howard Hughes Holdings and Sony Pictures are demonstrating a strong commitment to the project's success, ready to invest upfront before benefiting from any state-offered incentives.

This development heralds a new era for Las Vegas, positioning Summerlin at the forefront of what could be termed "Hollywood 2.0", as envisioned by Wahlberg and supported by the Nevada Film Office's call for more studio space in the region.

๐Ÿ€ UNLV Triumphs Over Princeton in NIT, Notches First Postseason Win in Over a Decade

The UNLV menโ€™s basketball team clinched a significant 84-77 victory over Princeton in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Jadwin Gymnasium, marking their first postseason win since 2008. Despite missing two pivotal players, Kalib Boone and Luis Rodriguez, the Rebels demonstrated depth and resilience, advancing to the second round where they will host Boston College.

Rob Whaley Jr. emerged as a standout performer, netting a career-high 21 points on perfect shooting from the field and grabbing nine rebounds. His effort in the paint proved too much for Princeton, particularly during a 9-0 Rebel run that solidified their lead in the second half.

Keylan Boone stepped up in his brother Kalib's absence, delivering an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double, ensuring his teamโ€™s progression and the continuation of his collegiate career.

UNLV's win was highlighted by a crucial stretch spanning the halftime break, overturning a deficit into a lead they would not relinquish. The teamโ€™s execution in the second half, characterized by aggressive play and strategic scoring, was pivotal in their victory.

Despite a challenging game from Princeton's Caden Pierce, the Ivy League player of the year, UNLVโ€™s balanced attack and crucial contributions from players like Justin Webster and Shane Nowell helped seal the win. The Rebels' performance was particularly notable given the absence of key contributors Boone and Rodriguez, the latter missing due to a family issue.

As UNLV prepares to face Boston College, the status of Boone and Rodriguez remains uncertain, casting a shadow of suspense over their upcoming matchup. Nonetheless, the Rebels' ability to secure a win under challenging circumstances speaks volumes about their depth and resilience.

๐ŸŒŽ Sphere to Host First Business Conference with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Keynote

The Sphere, a 17,000-seat venue known for its concerts and film presentations since its opening in late September, will soon venture into new territory by hosting its first business conference. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is set to lead this new chapter with a keynote address by President and CEO Antonio Neri during the HPE Discover 2024 event on June 18 in Las Vegas.

This marks a significant moment for the Sphere, showcasing its capability to serve as a cutting-edge platform for business presentations beyond its initial entertainment focus. The venue's advanced beamforming audio technology and a 160,000-square-foot high-definition wraparound screen are expected to offer an unparalleled experience for conference attendees.

While the financial details of the arrangement remain undisclosed, the use of the Sphere for HPE's keynote underscores the venue's versatility and its appeal to major brands seeking innovative ways to connect with their audience. Sphere officials have highlighted the venue's ability to facilitate presentations in multiple languages directly to the audience without headphones, although it's not specified if HPE will utilize this feature.

Jennifer Koester, President of Sphere Business Operations at Sphere Entertainment, emphasized the Sphere's position as a next-generation medium for creating unmatched experiences. The HPE Discover 2024 keynote is anticipated to leverage the Sphere's state-of-the-art technologies to elevate brand storytelling and corporate event standards.

Since its inception, the Sphere has hosted notable events, including performances by U2 and the premiere of Darren Aronofsky's "Postcard from Earth." It's also set to welcome its first sporting event with UFC in September and will feature student artwork from UNLV and the Clark County School District on its exterior in July.

Jim Jackson, Chief Marketing Officer at HPE, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming keynote, viewing it as an opportunity to highlight HPE's innovative endeavors and commitment to engaging new audiences. The event is poised to signify a bold statement for HPE's brand and its vision for the future, particularly in the era of AI.

๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽ™ UNLV School of Music Introduces New Mariachi Program

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Music is expanding its curriculum with the introduction of several new classes focused on mariachi music, set to begin in the fall semester. Spearheading the program is Stephen Blanco, who previously established a successful mariachi program at Las Vegas High School in 2018.

Blanco's vision for the university-level mariachi ensemble and the inclusion of classes designed to equip music educators with the skills to teach mariachi heralds a significant milestone for music education. "Weโ€™re putting together a great team of educators and mariachi musicians to tackle this project and I canโ€™t wait to see whatโ€™s ahead,โ€ Blanco shared, reflecting his enthusiasm for the initiative.

The growth and achievements of the mariachi program under Blanco's guidance at the high school level โ€” expanding from 50 to over 200 students and receiving Certificates of Congressional Commendation โ€” underscore the potential for the new university program to foster similar success and recognition.

Isrea Butler, the director of the School of Music at UNLV, highlighted the program's dual objective: to enable students to celebrate and perpetuate their cultural heritage through mariachi and to educate future generations in this traditional art form. Butler emphasized the importance of not only performing mariachi music but also learning the pedagogical skills necessary to teach this music tradition effectively.

The introduction of the mariachi program at UNLV represents an important step towards diversifying the musical education offerings and promoting cultural preservation and appreciation among students.
