❎ Gov. Lombardo and Democrats Disagree on Fixing Nevada's Housing Woes
In Nevada, the escalating housing crisis has become a battleground between Democrats and Republicans, each blaming the other for the current situation and offering divergent solutions. Republican Governor Joe Lombardo recently reached out to President Joe Biden, requesting the release of more federal land for housing development in Nevada and critiquing the administration's restrictive policies. In response, Democrats, led by Nevada State Democratic Party Chairwoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno, accused Lombardo of exacerbating the housing crisis through his actions, notably his veto of several key housing bills aimed at protecting renters and managing evictions.
Monroe-Moreno criticized Lombardo for vetoing bills that would have capped rent increases for seniors, established new eviction procedures to protect tenants, and prevented landlords from charging excessive fees. She also highlighted the veto of a bill meant to delay evictions for those awaiting rental assistance, a decision that has led to over 30,000 evictions in the state.
While Lombardo argues that his vetoes were necessary to avoid burdening the rental market and creating hurdles for landlords, Democrats advocate for a more comprehensive approach to solving the housing crisis, including potentially utilizing federal land for development, though they note this alone won't solve the problem.
Amid these political tensions, Democrats are urging voters to support their candidates in 2024, promising to tackle the housing affordability issue. Meanwhile, Lombardo, facing the possibility of losing veto power if Democrats gain a supermajority, emphasizes his administration's efforts to increase housing availability through investment and regulatory reduction. He has touted initiatives through the Nevada Housing Division that aim to develop rental homes and support new homeowners.
The debate also extends to experts, with UNLV assistant professor of economics Nicholas Irwin noting the complexity of the housing issue in Nevada, exacerbated by factors like lower-wage jobs, the impact of remote work, and the role of investment firms in the housing market. Irwin advocates for a comprehensive and pragmatic approach to address the crisis, stressing the need for leadership collaboration.
🏒 Golden Knights Edge Out Blues in Overtime Thriller, Extend Wild-Card Lead
In a thrilling overtime showdown, the Vegas Golden Knights edged out the St. Louis Blues with a 2-1 victory at the Enterprise Center. The highlight of the game came from Golden Knights' goalie Logan Thompson, who made a game-changing penalty shot save 30 seconds into overtime, denying Blues' Pavel Buchnevich. This crucial stop set the stage for Jonathan Marchessault to score the winning goal 49 seconds into overtime, marking his 39th of the season. Marchessault's goal wouldn't have been possible without Thompson's stellar performance, who finished the night with 30 saves, securing his 20th win of the season.
William Karlsson lauded Thompson's performance as "clutch," especially vital as the team seeks to solidify their position for the playoffs. Thompson's heroics were part of a broader team effort that saw the Golden Knights extending their lead over the Blues for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The victory also marked the Knights' first three-game winning streak since mid-January, with Thompson allowing just three goals across these wins.
Despite a late equalizer from the Blues' Brandon Saad, the Knights held on to secure the win, thanks in large part to Thompson's numerous key saves throughout the game. The game also featured strong goaltending from both sides, with Blues' goalie Jordan Binnington making 32 saves in a closely contested match.
The win keeps the Golden Knights in the hunt in the Pacific Division, trailing the Los Angeles Kings by just two points. The team looks forward to the return of defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who has been out due to illness, as they continue their road trip against the formidable Nashville Predators.
💲 Media & Technology Group Set to Trade on Nasdaq Following Merger
Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of the social networking site Truth Social, is scheduled to start trading on the Nasdaq stock market. This follows a merger with Digital World Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded shell company, which was approved by shareholders last Friday. Despite the approval, Digital World's shares experienced volatility, dropping 13.7% on Friday and then surging 35.2% to $49.95 on Monday.
Former President Donald Trump, who will hold the majority of the combined entity's shares, totaling nearly 79 million with an approximate value of $4 billion, faces a "lock-up" provision. This rule restricts insiders from selling their shares for six months, barring any board amendments.
In related news, Trump attended a hearing in New York regarding his criminal hush money case and dealt with a reduction in the bond he must post in a civil fraud appeal. Truth Social, launched in February 2022 after Trump was banned from major platforms, remains his primary social media channel despite reinstatements.
Trump Media & Technology Group, which has not yet disclosed Truth Social's user numbers, is anticipated to reveal more as it becomes publicly traded. Preliminary estimates suggest around 5 million active users, trailing behind giants like TikTok and Facebook but outpacing other alternative tech platforms.
The company, which faced a $49 million loss in the first nine months of the previous year, will trade under the ticker symbol "DJT."
✈ Late-Night Adventures: Southwest Sets Sights on Las Vegas and Hawaii for New Service
Southwest Airlines is set to introduce late-night, or "red-eye," flights in the next few years, starting with services from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and extending to Hawaii. This initiative was announced by Ryan Green, Southwest's Chief Commercial Officer, emphasizing the airline's strategy to enhance revenue and offer more options to travelers. The decision aligns with the airline's broader growth plans amid Boeing Corp.'s announcement of delayed aircraft deliveries to Southwest.
The Dallas-based airline, the busiest carrier at Reid International, has pointed to the necessity of significant preparatory work before launching these flights. Southwest aims to serve leisure markets and locations where it has a strong presence with these late-night services. Green revealed that up to 50 late-night flights per day could be offered, particularly benefiting from the airline's existing fleet utilization and offering lower ticket prices to customers.
Late-night flights are especially popular for west-to-east travel, enabling passengers to arrive on the East Coast by early morning. Southwest's move to late-night flying comes after upgrading its reservation system, which previously lacked the capability for such scheduling. This marks a significant shift from the airline's earlier operations and reflects a similar strategy once used by America West Airlines at the Las Vegas airport, which served as a "night hub."
Southwest's late-night flight expansion comes as the airline adjusts to Boeing's revised delivery schedule for the 737-7 and 737-8 MAX jets, reducing the expected number of new aircraft in the coming years. The impact of Southwest's plans on Reid International Airport's operations remains to be detailed, as airport representatives have not yet commented on the developments.
