๐ฅ Southern Nevada Health District Launches Pop-Up Produce Stands in Las Vegas
The Southern Nevada Health District is reintroducing its pop-up produce stands to Las Vegas, offering affordable, organic fruits and vegetables to the community. Aimed at combating food insecurity and promoting healthy eating, these stands will be accessible from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bonneville Transit Center, located at 101 E. Bonneville Avenue.
These pop-up events are part of a broader initiative to provide easy access to nutritious food options, especially in areas where such resources are scarce. Customers can pay using SNAP/EBT cards, as well as cash, debit, or credit cards, ensuring the stands are accessible to a wide range of individuals.
Scheduled dates for the pop-up stands include April 2, April 9, May 7, May 14, June 4, and June 11. The initiative has seen significant success in the past, with nearly 2,300 pounds of produce sold and almost $4,600 in total sales last year, 40.4% of which came from SNAP/EBT transactions.
๐ Golden Knights' Playoff Path Clearer After Dominant Road Performance
The Vegas Golden Knights are on the verge of securing their sixth playoff appearance in seven seasons following a highly successful road trip. The team's journey to St. Louis on March 24 culminated in a week-long endeavor that saw them amassing seven out of a possible eight points across four games, significantly boosting their playoff prospects. Despite a hiccup against Nashville, where they squandered a three-goal lead to lose in overtime, the Knights' overall resilience and performance have left little doubt about their participation in the upcoming playoffs.
Under the guidance of coach Bruce Cassidy and the spirited play of right wing Jonathan Marchessault, the Knights showcased their championship mettle. Their recent form, including a six-game point streak and an 8-2-1 record in their last 11 games, underscores a team hitting its stride at the crucial moment.
The Knights have not only solidified their position for a playoff berth but also re-entered the race for the Pacific Division's top three automatic spots, overtaking the Los Angeles Kings and eyeing potential home-ice advantages in key upcoming division games. With the playoffs on the horizon, their potential opponents range widely due to the tight standings in the Western Conference, making any predictions difficult. However, a rematch with the Oilers from last year's series or a face-off against division leaders like Vancouver or Dallas remains a possibility.
๐ฐ A Decade and a Half in Limbo: The Unwritten Future of the New Frontier Plot
Nearly 17 years after the New Frontier Hotel and Casino was demolished in a spectacular implosion watched by throngs of spectators, the Las Vegas Strip plot it occupied remains undeveloped, with no clear plans for its future. The 38-acre site, now owned by Wynn Resorts, is strategically located between the Fashion Show mall and Resorts World Las Vegas, yet its fate remains uncertain despite its prime location.
Originally sold in 2007 for $1.24 billion to Israeli investors with ambitious plans for a Plaza-branded project, the site's development was thwarted by the economic crash and the bursting of Las Vegas' real estate bubble. Subsequent ownership by Australian billionaire James Packer introduced plans for the Alon Las Vegas resort, which also fell through due to financial hurdles.
Wynn Resorts acquired the property in 2017 for $336 million, expressing initial enthusiasm for rapid development. However, the project stalled following allegations of sexual misconduct against company founder Steve Wynn, who resigned shortly after. As of now, Wynn Resorts has made no public updates on their plans for the site, beyond acknowledging it as a potential future development area in securities filings. The acquisition not only included the land but also significant water rights, a valuable asset in the desert city of Las Vegas.
๐ฆนโโ๏ธ UNLV Tragedy Captured: The Final Act of Campus Gunman Revealed
In a heartrending chapter of UNLV history, surveillance footage released this week provides a detailed account of the tragic events on December 6, when former professor Anthony Polito opened fire at Beam Hall, leading to the deaths of three faculty members. The campus and the Las Vegas community were plunged into mourning as the footage revealed the actions of Polito, aged 67, and the immediate response by university and Metropolitan Police Department officers.
The comprehensive release, spanning over 20 hours of video and audio, includes campus surveillance, 911 calls, and body camera footage from the responding officers. UNLV President Keith Whitfield described the release as a painful reminder of the university's darkest day, expressing continued grief for the professors lost: Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, Cha Jan โJerryโ Chang, 64, and Naoko Takemaru, 69. Another professor sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.
The footage detailed Polito's arrival on campus, the retrieval of items from his car, and his fatal confrontation with UNLV police, particularly highlighting the bravery of officers and bystanders during these harrowing moments. Among the first responders, university police Officer Cody Schmidt and Las Vegas officers Jacob Noriega and Ty Vesperas were noted for their heroic actions in aiding the wounded and confronting the threat.
UNLV Police Chief Adam Garcia commended the courage and precision of all involved in responding to the emergency, underscoring their efforts to save lives amid chaos.
