๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Summer Safety: Las Vegas Experts Urge Vigilance to Prevent Child Drownings

As summer approaches, Las Vegas safety experts are emphasizing the importance of pool safety to prevent child drownings, a tragic occurrence with an average of eight children losing their lives annually in Southern Nevada. Jeanne Marsala, injury prevention coordinator at Sunrise Children's Hospital and director of Safe Kids Clark County, highlighted the need for continuous education on water safety precautions.

Despite 90% of parents claiming to supervise their children while swimming, distractions are common, potentially leading to dangerous situations. The implications of near-drowning incidents are severe, with possible brain damage occurring in children who survive after being submerged for four to six minutes.

To combat these risks, Sunrise Children's Hospital and Safe Kids Clark County, in collaboration with local authorities, hosted April Pool's Day, offering demonstrations and safety tips at Water Wings Swim School. The event stressed the importance of undivided attention while supervising children near water, the adoption of the Water Watcher strategy for continuous vigilance, the necessity of swimming with an adult, wearing life jackets, learning CPR, and avoiding swimming near drains or suction outlets to prevent underwater entrapment.

๐ŸŽฐ The Birth of the Las Vegas Strip: El Rancho Vegas Marks a Historical Milestone

Over eight decades ago, the Las Vegas Strip began its iconic journey with the opening of El Rancho Vegas, the first hotel-casino on Las Vegas Boulevard, on April 3, 1941. This Western-themed resort, founded by California businessman Thomas Hull, marked the dawn of what would become the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. Positioned on what is now the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, El Rancho Vegas was a beacon for travelers, especially from California, offering a novel integration of a casino with hotel amenities.

Historian Michael Green of UNLV refers to El Rancho Vegas as the "beachhead" or the seed from which the vibrant Las Vegas Strip grew. Despite being outside city limits to avoid taxes and regulations, Hull's venture incorporated a casino at the behest of local friends, alongside a range of amenities like restaurants, shops, a swimming pool, and entertainment options that laid the groundwork for the comprehensive resort experience associated with the Strip today.

The resort is also credited with introducing the concept of the all-you-can-eat midnight buffet, an idea that came from publicist Herb McDonald and became a staple in Las Vegas dining. Through the years, El Rancho Vegas changed hands multiple times, with links to some of Las Vegas' most infamous figures, including a refusal by Hull to sell to mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, only to later sell to individuals connected with the Purple Gang of Detroit.

The original structure of El Rancho Vegas met a tragic end in 1960 due to a devastating fire, causing millions in damages and the loss of significant funds stored in the vault. Although the surrounding cottages survived, the property could not sustain itself as a non-gaming hotel and was eventually purchased by Howard Hughes in 1970 for $8.5 million. Despite its physical absence, El Rancho Vegas remains a historic landmark, symbolizing the adventurous spirit and evolving legacy of the Las Vegas Strip.

Reflecting on the Legacy

El Rancho Vegas not only pioneered the integrated resort model that defines the Las Vegas Strip but also set a precedent for the entertainment, dining, and gaming experiences that characterize Las Vegas today. Its history offers a glimpse into the transformative journey of Las Vegas Boulevard from a desert road to a global entertainment capital, reminding us of the humble beginnings from which today's neon-lit spectacle arose.

๐Ÿก Southwest Las Vegas Valley Experiences a Development Boom

The southwestern part of the Las Vegas Valley, particularly the unincorporated Enterprise area, is currently witnessing an unprecedented development boom, transforming it into one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. This surge is marked by a mix of commercial and residential projects that are changing the landscape and the community's lifestyle.

Scot Marker, a retail specialist with Cushman & Wakefield, highlights the significant evolution of the area. Notably, developments like the Durango Resort & Casino and UnCommons, a mixed-use space featuring retail, restaurants, office buildings, and high-end rental units, are pivotal in redefining the area's appeal. UnCommons, in particular, emulates a small downtown core, adding a new dimension to the southwest's urban fabric.

This development trend is supported by data from Cushman & Wakefield, indicating that the southwest submarket has seen the majority of retail completions in the Las Vegas Valley since 2023. The area added 128,488 square feet of retail space last year, with an additional 6,000 square feet under construction, showcasing its growing prominence in the retail sector.

The influence of Howard Hughes Holdings and its Summerlin community is also noteworthy. Summerlin's success with mixed-use developments has paved the way for similar projects in the southwest valley, proving the viability of new architectural and layout styles in Las Vegas.

Ower Sherwood of Fidelity National Title emphasizes the strategic geographic location of the southwest valley. Situated between major employment centers like Summerlin and Henderson, the area has become a convenient and desirable location for businesses and residents alike. The shift towards work-from-home dynamics has further fueled the demand for office space in the southwest, with speculative developments quickly being leased out, defying national trends of high vacancy rates in urban office markets.

Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones notes the significant investments made in enhancing road infrastructure and fostering economic development to support this growth. With approximately $290 million allocated to infrastructure projects in the southwest valley, alongside investments in digital infrastructure and redevelopment plans, the region is poised for continued expansion and innovation.

The development boom in the southwest Las Vegas Valley not only signifies economic growth but also reflects a shift towards more integrated, community-focused urban planning, offering a vibrant and sustainable environment for residents and businesses.
