๐จ Wind Advisory and Record Cold Predicted for Las Vegas Region
As Las Vegas approaches another spring weekend, residents are being warned of impending inclement weather, characterized by high winds and potentially record-breaking cold temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory effective from 1 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, covering the entire Las Vegas region. The advisory predicts steady south winds ranging from 25-35 mph, with gusts possibly reaching up to 55 mph. Areas like Laughlin could see winds up to 52 mph, while Furnace Creek in Death Valley is forecasted to experience winds at 55 mph.
These strong winds pose a risk of making driving conditions particularly challenging, especially for high-profile vehicles. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects to prevent damage. The weather conditions are also expected to create hazardous situations on area lakes, with strong winds and rough waves posing a threat to small craft. Additionally, the possibility of tree limbs being blown down could lead to power outages across the region.
Despite a relatively warm Thursday, with highs expected to be around 78 degrees, a significant drop in temperature is anticipated for Friday. The forecast predicts a high of only 58 degrees, potentially tying the record for the lowest high temperature for the date, set last year. The weekend is expected to see a slight warming trend, with temperatures approaching 70 degrees, though still below the average for this time of year.
๐ Marchessault Hits 40-Goal Milestone, Eyes Knights' Scoring Record
Jonathan Marchessault, the Golden Knights' right wing, has consistently proven himself as a pivotal force for the team, driven by an unwavering work ethic and a determination to exceed expectations. At 33, Marchessault is in his 11th NHL season, his perseverance and skill culminating in becoming the second undrafted player to clinch the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP last year. His recent achievement of scoring 40 goals in a season further cements his status as a key player for the Knights, demonstrating his crucial role in the team's offensive strategy.
Marchessault's journey in the NHL is marked by his dedication and resilience, overcoming the odds to secure his place in the league and with the Knights, where he leads in goals, assists, and points. His contributions extend beyond personal milestones, emphasizing team victory and a collective effort towards success. His performance is particularly noteworthy given his consistency and durability, missing only 23 games over seven seasons with the Knights and playing a significant role in their pursuit of Stanley Cup glory.
His knack for seizing critical moments was on full display when he scored the game-winning goal against the Minnesota Wild in overtime, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure. This goal was a testament to his nickname "Money" Marchessault, earned for his decisive plays and contributions in crucial moments. Marchessault's impact is recognized by his teammates and coaches alike, who commend his positioning, scoring ability, and the streak of hot performances that have become a hallmark of his gameplay.
As the regular season progresses, Marchessault sets his sights on the Knights' record for goals in a season, demonstrating his competitive spirit and ambition. Inspired by Martin St. Louis, Marchessault shares a similar path of overcoming the odds as an undrafted player to achieve remarkable success. His dedication and hard work have not only made him a central figure for the Golden Knights but also a symbol of perseverance and excellence in the NHL.
๐ฐ Nevada Gaming Commission to Decide on Bringing Slot Machines to Historic Moulin Rouge
Next month, slot machine enthusiasts will have the unique opportunity to gamble at the historic site of the Moulin Rouge, provided the Nevada Gaming Commission approves a recent recommendation from the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The Control Board has proposed granting a nonrestricted gaming license for slot machine operations to United Coin Co., operating as Century Gaming Technologies, at the famed location on 840 W. Bonanza Road. This proposal, set for consideration on April 18, aims to maintain the site's gaming rights through a temporary setup.
On May 14, starting at 6 a.m., a trailer equipped with 16 slot machines will be open to the public for eight hours at the Moulin Rouge site. This move is part of a strategy to preserve the historic site's grandfathered gaming rights, a practice upheld by occasional temporary openings over recent years. Despite this initiative, there are currently no plans by RAH Capital, the property's owner, and its principal, Richard Hoffman, for further development of the site.
The Moulin Rouge holds a significant place in American history as the nationโs first desegregated casino, a status that led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Opening and closing its doors in 1955, the Moulin Rouge was a beacon of integration in Las Vegas, attracting a host of celebrities across racial lines, including Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra. The casino's legacy includes not only its groundbreaking stance on racial integration but also its cultural impact, hosting performances by some of the most iconic artists of the time.
Despite its historical significance, the original Moulin Rouge faced financial difficulties leading to bankruptcy, and the property suffered multiple fires over the years, resulting in the eventual demolition of the building. However, its memory lives on, with a preserved Moulin Rouge sign at the Neon Museum and ongoing efforts to honor the site's historical value to the Las Vegas community and its cultural heritage.
๐ฆนโโ๏ธ State Sen. Dina Neal Under Investigation for Influencing Federal Funding Allocation
The FBI is currently investigating allegations against Nevada State Senator Dina Neal, accused of misusing her influence to secure federal funding for a friend through the NV Grow grant program. This inquiry follows reports by the Las Vegas Review-Journal detailing concerns over Neal's conduct, specifically involving the allocation of funds intended to assist local businesses.
Kevin Raiford, a business professor at the College of Southern Nevada, and North Las Vegas Police Chief Jacqueline Gravatt have both been interviewed by the FBI. Raiford, who was questioned about Neal's role in the management of the multimillion-dollar, taxpayer-funded program, has previously alleged that Neal pressured him to award money to unqualified businesses, including one owned by Neal's acquaintance, former police officer Donavan McIntosh.
Despite Neal's denial of any wrongdoing and her dismissal of the accusations as part of a "smear campaign" tied to political disagreements, the investigation has delved into her involvement in NV Grow's financial decisions. This scrutiny includes her pushing for a $20,000 grant to McIntosh's startup, which ultimately received $6,000. Neal, who had a legal and financial connection to McIntosh's business, has since distanced herself from these ties.
The investigation not only raises questions about Neal's ethical conduct but also sheds light on the challenges faced by NV Grow in fulfilling its mission to support small businesses. Raiford's removal from the program and his concerns over its current direction underscore the broader implications of the controversy, affecting local entrepreneurs and taxpayers alike.
