🦠 Las Vegas Health District Issues Measles Warning for Early April Visitors
The Southern Nevada Health District has issued a warning about a potential measles exposure in Las Vegas after an out-of-state visitor, present from April 1 to April 6, frequented several popular spots, including the MGM Grand. This individual, whose immunization status is unknown, visited various locations in Las Vegas and Henderson, including the Grand Wok Noodle Bar, International Smoke Restaurant, MGM Fitness Center, Ka Cirque de Soleil show, MGM food court, and Harry Reid International Airport.
Measles, known for its high contagion, can remain viable in the air for up to two hours after the infected person has left, increasing the risk of spread. Health officials urge those who were at these locations during the specified times to monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that typically appears a few days after initial symptoms. They are advised to contact healthcare providers if symptoms develop and to inform medical facilities before arrival to prevent further spread. The health district emphasizes the effectiveness of the measles vaccine in preventing the disease.
🏒 First 400 Cars Get Free Gas at Vegas Golden Knights Event on April 17
The Vegas Golden Knights, in partnership with Smith’s, announced a free gas giveaway set for April 17 at the Smith’s fuel center located at 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. This event, part of the Knights’ Fan Appreciation Week, will offer $50 of free gasoline to the first 400 cars starting at 7:30 a.m. The initiative, known as "Fuel the Realm," involves a total giveaway of $20,000 in fuel. Additionally, from April 17-19, all customers at this location can enjoy a 20-cent discount per gallon. This marks the fifth collaboration between Smith’s and the VGK Foundation to provide free gas over the last two years.
🎰 MGM Seeks to Limit FTC Demand Amidst Cyberattack Investigation
MGM Resorts International is pushing back against a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) request for extensive company data related to a cyberattack that occurred last fall. The Las Vegas-based casino operator, which experienced significant operational disruptions during the nine-day attack starting September 10, argues that the FTC's demand is excessively broad and might interfere with ongoing FBI investigations. The attack affected MGM's entire nationwide network, impacting services and guest convenience.
The FTC's civil investigative demand (CID), issued on January 25, seeks a wide range of documents, some of which MGM claims are irrelevant. The company, the largest employer in Nevada, has contested the application of FTC's Safeguards Rule and Red Flags Rule to its operations, stating that these do not apply due to the nature of its business.
Amidst this legal battle, it was also revealed that FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan was at the MGM Grand during the cyberattack, which influenced her experience and possibly the FTC's investigative focus. MGM has formally requested to quash or limit the CID, expressing disappointment over what it views as an unjust investigation, especially given its proactive cooperation with federal law enforcement from the start of the cyber incident.
🏡 Real Estate Commissions Exceed National Average, Survey Finds
Nevada ranks 13th nationally for the highest real estate commission rates, with an average rate of 5.8%, above the national average of 5.4%, according to a Clever Real Estate survey. This survey, which included data from 630 partner agents, highlights regional disparities in commission rates across the U.S., with West Virginia topping the list at 6.6% and Hawaii at the lowest with 4.7%.
The study sheds light on commission structures, showing that listing agents typically receive about 2.8% and buyer’s agents about 2.6%. This comes at a time when the real estate industry faces significant scrutiny. Numerous class-action lawsuits allege that practices, particularly those involving the National Association of Realtors (NAR), have artificially inflated commissions through the Multiple Listing Service system.
Recent developments include a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling that could reopen a Department of Justice investigation into NAR’s practices, amidst broader discussions about transparency and fairness in real estate agent compensation. Interestingly, a Redfin study indicated that many Americans are unaware of how much they pay their real estate agents, pointing to a need for greater clarity in real estate transactions.
