๐ New Vegas Loop Tunnel to Enhance Connectivity with Convention Center and Airport
Elon Musk's Boring Company has initiated construction on a new tunnel as part of the Vegas Loop expansion, marking its farthest stretch from the Las Vegas Convention Center yet. This tunnel will extend to a new station at 3150 Paradise Road, strategically positioned near UNLV's Thomas & Mack Center and the Virgin Hotel. This expansion aims to significantly enhance connectivity between major points in Las Vegas, including the possibility of linking directly to the nearby Harry Reid International Airport.
The project involves launching two tunneling machines to facilitate north and south traffic, with the anticipation that one of the two tunnels may be operational within 12 to 18 months. The Vegas Loop is already operational between several expo halls at the convention center and the Resorts World station, with additional stations like Westgate and Encore set to open soon. The full plan includes a comprehensive network with 93 stations and 68 miles of tunnels reaching key locations such as the Brightline West high-speed rail station and a potential NBA-ready arena and hotel project.
The expansion not only promises to improve daily commutes but also to provide substantial benefits during events like the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The connection to the Virgin Hotel will offer a new logistics option for event-goers, further enhancing the Vegas Loop's utility as a major transportation asset.
๐ Raiders Eye Major Reinforcements for Offensive Line in Upcoming NFL Draft
The Las Vegas Raiders are facing vacancies at right tackle and right guard this offseason, making the offensive line a significant focus for the upcoming NFL draft starting April 25. With the 13th overall pick and a draft rich in tackle and guard talent, the Raiders have a strong opportunity to bolster their line. Potential first-round choices include top prospects like Notre Dameโs Joe Alt and others such as Olumuyiwa Fashanu and Taliese Fuaga, who has been rising on draft boards and could fit well at right tackle or guard.
Beyond the first round, the Raiders could address other needs such as quarterback or cornerback, returning to the offensive line in the second or third rounds. Promising second-round tackle prospects include Tyler Guyton and Jordan Morgan, while guard prospects like Christian Haynes and Cooper Beebe are also on the radar. The later rounds will allow the Raiders to add developmental prospects, enhancing depth and tackling key positions strategically throughout the draft.
๐ UNLV Aims to Boost Tech and Medical Industries at Harry Reid Tech Park
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is actively seeking to attract high-profile companies, particularly in technology and medicine, to its Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in the southwest Las Vegas Valley. This initiative aims to diversify the region's economy and leverage the positive developmental momentum in the area. The tech park, which spans 122 acres with plans for about 1.5 million square feet of office space, currently houses over 100 companies and is a hub for various industries, including sports and entertainment.
Significant developments at the tech park include a large film studio, the Las Vegas Media Campus, slated to potentially begin construction between late 2024 and early 2025. This project, along with other high-tech facilities like the T-Mobile Business Customer Experience Center, underscores the parkโs strategic importance to Las Vegasโ economic landscape. UNLVโs vision for the park is not only to foster economic growth but also to provide promising career opportunities for its students post-graduation.
โ ๏ธ Poker in Nevada: A New Chapter Begins with Z4Poker and MGM
Online poker in Nevada, which began in the early 2010s, has experienced fluctuating interest and participation. Initially launched as a revenue opportunity for local companies and a gateway for players to physical casino experiences, it has faced several challenges. The state saw its first online poker rooms with Ultimate Poker by Station Casinos in April 2013 and WSOP.com by Caesars Entertainment shortly after. However, limited player bases within state boundaries and competitive dynamics led to a contraction of offerings, with many providers shutting down.
Assembly Bill 114, signed into law in 2013, marked Nevada's first legislation on online gaming, setting the stage for these developments. Nevada later formed compacts with Delaware and New Jersey to expand player pools, which provided some uplift. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a notable but temporary increase in online poker activity.
Currently, the Nevada Gaming Commission is reviewing requests for extended licensing from two companies, Z4Poker LLC and MGM Resorts Interactive LLC. Both are aiming to revitalize and expand their online poker offerings. Z4Poker is preparing to relaunch real-money games, and MGM Resorts, in partnership with BetMGM, sees a potential expansion into new states like Michigan and Pennsylvania as a significant opportunity to increase player liquidity and rejuvenate the market.
