⚡ New NV Energy Facility Stores Sun's Power for Evening Use in Nevada
NV Energy has officially launched a significant battery storage facility, the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System, which promises to enhance solar energy usage during peak evening hours. Located at the site of a former coal plant about an hour away from Las Vegas, the facility has been operational since December and was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.
The facility houses 208 large batteries capable of storing approximately 220 megawatts of energy, enough to power about 165,000 homes. This innovative system captures excess solar energy during daylight and reallocates it to meet energy demands from 5 to 9 p.m., a crucial time when energy usage spikes as residents return home.
Doug Cannon, CEO of NV Energy, highlighted the strategic importance of the project, explaining that it not only meets peak load demands but also offers a more cost-effective energy solution. Energy stored at the facility is about 60 percent cheaper than energy purchased on the open market, which could lead to lower utility bills for customers, particularly during the high-demand summer months.
This development is part of NV Energy's broader goal to increase its renewable energy capacity to 50% by 2030. Currently, the utility's renewable energy levels stand at 39.7%. The Reid Gardner facility, which cost about $257 million to develop, received a substantial financial boost from tax credits provided by the Inflation Reduction Act, covering approximately $100 million of the total cost.
As Nevada continues to attract commercial operations, including manufacturing and data centers, NV Energy is preparing for increased energy demands. The utility plans to include more energy storage, along with solar and geothermal projects, in its upcoming resource plan application to the Public Utilities Commission.
This initiative not only supports Nevada's energy needs but also contributes significantly to the state's sustainability goals, ensuring that Nevada remains a competitive hub for business with a reliable and innovative energy infrastructure.
🏒Despite Overtime Defeat, Knights' Goalie Logan Thompson Shines with Career-High Saves
In an intense playoff battle, Wyatt Johnston emerged as the hero for Dallas, netting the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Stars a pivotal victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. Johnston, who is just 20 years old, demonstrated his rising star status with a dominant performance that included two goals, the second of which decisively ended the game 3:38 into overtime.
Dallas's young center led the way with eight shots on goal, highlighting his relentless presence on the ice. His first goal set the tone early, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead towards the end of the first period. The key play came in overtime when Johnston skated past Knights defenseman Shea Theodore and expertly lifted the puck over goaltender Logan Thompson, who had otherwise been stellar with 43 saves throughout the night.
Despite Thompson's heroic efforts, which matched his career-high in saves, the Knights could not overcome the offensive pressure from Dallas. The Stars were particularly dangerous in creating scoring opportunities, ending the game with a staggering 23-4 edge in high-danger chances, as reported by Natural Stat Trick.
On the other side, the Knights saw a noteworthy performance from defenseman Brayden McNabb, who not only scored his second goal in three postseason games but also assisted on another, marking his second multipoint playoff game. Despite these efforts, Knights coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged the team's need for improvement, stating, "We just didn’t have the level we needed tonight to win a playoff hockey game."
Stars coach Pete DeBoer praised Johnston's exceptional skill and poise under pressure, remarking on his potential as one of the NHL's future standout players.
The series continues to heat up, and both teams will look to make strategic adjustments before their next face-off. The Knights are tasked with finding an answer to Dallas's aggressive playstyle, while the Stars aim to maintain their momentum from this critical win.
🚗 Fatal Pedestrian Collision on 215 Beltway Spurs Major Road Closures and Investigation
A tragic incident early Sunday morning has left one person dead following a vehicle-pedestrian collision on the 215 Beltway near Far Hills Avenue, prompting an extensive investigation by the Nevada State Police.
The collision occurred at approximately 5:55 a.m., when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that subsequently fled the scene. Emergency response teams arrived shortly after the incident but were unable to save the victim, who died at the scene.
As part of the ongoing investigation, major road closures have been implemented in the area, affecting local traffic patterns. Both the I-215 northbound off-ramp to Summerlin Parkway and the I-215 Far Hills Avenue northbound on-ramp were closed for several hours, causing significant delays as investigators worked at the scene.
Details about the victim or the suspect vehicle have not been released as investigators are gathering evidence and seeking witnesses who might provide more information about the circumstances leading up to the crash. The Nevada State Police are urging anyone who may have been in the area at the time or who has any information about the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation.
This hit-and-run adds to a troubling trend of pedestrian fatalities in the region, prompting renewed calls for increased traffic safety measures and public awareness campaigns to prevent such incidents.
As the community reels from this loss, local authorities are also asking drivers and pedestrians to be particularly cautious on roadways, especially during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.
💲 Strategic Closure: Tropicana Makes Way for $1.5 Billion A's Stadium Project
The Tropicana Las Vegas was not shut down due to financial issues but was closed as part of a strategic plan linked to the development of a new stadium for the Oakland Athletics, according to executives from Gaming & Leisure Properties Inc. (GLPI). During the company's first-quarter earnings call, CEO Peter Carlino confirmed that the iconic resort was cash flow positive up until its closure on April 2.
The decision to close the Tropicana was aligned with the scheduled development of a $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat indoor stadium for the Athletics, which is set to begin construction in 2025. The demolition of the property is required to make space for this new project, with Clark County recently granting Bally’s Corp., the operator of the casino, permission to proceed with the demolition by October 20. An implosion of the Tropicana is planned for sometime in September or October, as part of the preparation for the construction of the stadium.
Brandon Moore, GLPI’s Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, stated that the closure was timed perfectly with the needs of the upcoming A's project and the integrated resort. He emphasized that the closure was not an effort to cut costs but was necessary due to logistical reasons and staffing challenges as employees anticipated the impending shutdown.
The closure of the Tropicana marks the end of an era for the Las Vegas Strip property but opens a new chapter as the city continues to evolve into a sports and entertainment hub. The project is also expected to boost local employment and tourism once completed.
Bally’s Corp. is expected to discuss further details regarding the closure and future plans during its upcoming first-quarter earnings call this Wednesday.
