๐Ÿ›ฃ Las Vegas Boulevard Faces Weeklong Traffic Delays Due to Roadwork

Starting this weekend, traffic on a section of the Las Vegas Strip will be significantly restricted. Clark County has announced that from 9 p.m. this Sunday until 5 p.m. on May 17, only one southbound lane of Las Vegas Boulevard will be open between Park and Tropicana Avenues to facilitate necessary excavation and paving operations.

In addition, Park Avenue will see reductions to one lane in each direction during the same period, from Sunday night to Tuesday evening. There will be no possibility for east-west traffic crossing at Park Avenue, though southbound left turn lanes from Las Vegas Boulevard onto Park Avenue will remain operational.

These restrictions are part of a larger series of roadworks that will continue through August, predominantly taking place between Harmon and Reno avenues. Most of the construction activities are scheduled overnight, from midnight to 9 a.m., Sunday through Friday.

Additional closures include Las Vegas Boulevard being narrowed to one southbound lane between Tropicana and Reno avenues for installation and maintenance of water lines, communications, and electrical systems. Similarly, Tropicana Avenue between Las Vegas Boulevard and Koval Lane will be reduced to two eastbound lanes to facilitate the removal of a median island. Also, Las Vegas Boulevard between Tropicana and the Aria will be restricted to one northbound lane for similar infrastructure upgrades.

The ongoing construction is estimated to cost $56 million and is part of a $150 million project aimed at enhancing Las Vegas Boulevard from Sahara Avenue to the 215 Beltway. This comprehensive project includes upgrades such as water line replacements, new pavement, enhanced pedestrian crossings, upgraded traffic signals, LED street lighting with smart poles, and rejuvenated median landscaping.

๐Ÿˆ Raiders to Hold Closed Training Camp Sessions in Costa Mesa Amid NFL Restrictions

The Las Vegas Raiders are adjusting to marketing and operational restrictions as they prepare to move part of their 2024 training camp to Costa Mesa, Southern California. The move comes with constraints due to the NFL territorial rights held by the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, limiting the Raiders' ability to market themselves and open their practices to the general public. Consequently, the Raiders plan to restrict attendance at their Costa Mesa workouts to season-ticket holders, select guests, and sponsors.

The Dallas Cowboys, by contrast, are permitted to open their Southern California practices to the public, a privilege stemming from their longstanding presence in the area before the Rams and Chargers' relocations to Los Angeles. Similarly, the New Orleans Saints, set to hold their training camp at UC Irvine, face restrictions like the Raiders.

The Raiders' agreement with Costa Mesa involves using the Jack Hammett Sports Complex for their summer camp, with a tentative window from July 19 to August 11 proposed. They must conduct at least 10 practices at the complex as per the deal and decide by January 1 if they wish to continue using the facility for their 2025 camp.

Meanwhile, the Chargers are transitioning their training camp to a new facility in El Segundo but have contractual ties to the Costa Mesa site through August 2026. Both the Rams and Chargers have historically opened their training camps to the public, with online registration required.

๐Ÿ’ฒ North Las Vegas Transforms from Financial Brink to Economic Boom Under City Manager's Strategic Vision

Over the past decade, North Las Vegas has undergone a significant transformation from the brink of bankruptcy to a burgeoning economic powerhouse. Under the leadership of outgoing City Manager Ryann Juden, the city has seen dramatic growth in industrial and retail spaces and ambitious plans for continued development. Juden, who recently stepped down after nearly 11 years in office, shared insights into the strategies that fueled this turnaround and his vision for the cityโ€™s future.

Economic Growth and Development Strategy: North Las Vegas has experienced remarkable growth since 2013, with the city's population increasing by 25 percent to over 282,000. The annual budget has swelled by approximately 138 percent to about $1.03 billion, and the number of active businesses has grown by 34.5 percent to about 7,242. This growth is attributed to a strategic focus on attracting new businesses and development, a concept Juden refers to as "grow-nomics." This strategy involves creating a business-friendly environment to generate new revenue without raising taxes, thus stabilizing the cityโ€™s financial base.

Industrial and Retail Expansion: One of the key drivers of North Las Vegas's resurgence is its industrial sector. The city currently boasts 68.3 million square feet of developed industrial land, with an additional 24 million square feet planned at the Apex Industrial Park. The retail sector has also seen significant growth, with 7.2 million square feet developed. These sectors have attracted major companies like Prologis, which has established an 11 million-square-foot industrial facility in the area, drawn by the city's efficient approval processes that save significant time and money.

Challenges and Opportunities in Health Care: While industrial growth has been a major strength, North Las Vegas still faces challenges, particularly in healthcare access. The planned development of a 135-acre medical campus called Helios was recently canceled, and the city is reevaluating its approach to developing this land, likely through a long-term ground lease to maintain more control.

Future Development Plans: Looking ahead, North Las Vegas is planning to develop 5,000 acres of federal land in collaboration with UNLV. The city envisions this area as a potential site for more medical facilities and health-focused community developments. In addition to new developments, North Las Vegas is also focusing on redeveloping existing sites. Projects like NLV Gateway Village and Hylo Park are aimed at revitalizing downtown and repurposing the sites of closed casinos into vibrant, mixed-use communities.

Leadership Transition: As Juden transitions out of his role to start a private equity and real estate firm, he will continue to consult part-time for the city. Micaela Moore, the former city attorney, has stepped in to fill the role of city manager, ensuring continuity in leadership.

This phase of growth and redevelopment in North Las Vegas not only highlights the city's potential but also sets a precedent for urban revitalization without relying heavily on taxpayer burdens. With continued focus on strategic development and community engagement, North Las Vegas is poised to sustain its growth trajectory and enhance its status as a significant player in the regional economy.

The hiring event is scheduled for May 22 from 10 am to 2 pm and May 23 from 2 pm to 6 pm at Allegiant Stadium.
