๐ŸŽ“ Bright Future Event at UNLV Highlights Community College Benefits and Financial Aid Options

On Sunday, students and career seekers, including Sierra and Alex, explored the potential benefits of starting their education at a low-cost community college during the Bright Future: Education, Access, and Financial Literacy Event held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Sierra is awaiting news on a potential state Promise scholarship, which could cover up to three years of fees at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). Considering various options, including the military and job searches, Alex remains focused on finding the best path forward.

Alex is also contemplating attending CSN, exploring the numerous career options available. "Iโ€™m just looking around seeing all the different options because there are so many of them," she said.

Approximately 500 attendees gathered at the event, which took place in the student union and Flora Dungan Hall. Barbara Blue, director of campus relations and visitor experience, noted the significant turnout for the four-hour program, which featured sessions on federal student loans, college admissions, class registration, credit management, military education benefits, resume building, and job searching strategies.

Zack Goodwin, executive director of financial aid and scholarships for UNLVโ€™s Institute for Financial Literacy and Wellness, led a session on federal student loans. He explained the intricacies of needs-based subsidized loans, unsubsidized loans, and PLUS loans. Goodwin emphasized the importance of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine loan eligibility.

Goodwin highlighted the relatively low borrowing rates at UNLV, with fewer than a quarter of undergraduates taking out loans and borrowing about a third less than the national average. He attributed this to Nevada's low tuition and robust aid programs.

Erich, a film studies enthusiast from Silverado High School, attended Goodwin's session to help decide his educational path. Erich says, "Iโ€™m thinking about doing two years at [community] college and then two years here at UNLV to save money."

Kass Moore, a career services employee at UNLV, offered sessions on resume building and leveraging LinkedIn for job searches. Moore advised attendees to keep resumes concise, avoiding overly general or lengthy descriptions.

๐Ÿ€ WNBA Launches Investigation into Aces' $100,000 Player Sponsorships

The WNBA has launched an investigation into the Las Vegas Aces following the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's (LVCVA) announcement of a sponsorship deal with the team's 12 rostered players. Each player is set to receive $100,000 under this arrangement, which was revealed by LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill after a team practice.

The announcement came during the fourth quarter of the Aces' 89-82 home victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Hill stated that the LVCVA had entered into individual sponsorship agreements with the players through their representatives, without the team's involvement, drawing comparisons to name, image, and likeness deals in college sports.

The WNBA's collective bargaining agreement prohibits teams and affiliates from making agreements where third parties compensate players for basketball services, which may be the focus of the investigation. Hill asserted that the sponsorship deals adhered to league guidelines, with players expected to make appearances and wear LVCVA-provided gear.

The Aces have faced scrutiny before, including a prior investigation into alleged salary cap violations and improper handling of former player Dearica Hamby's trade while pregnant. The league had penalized the team by suspending coach Becky Hammon and rescinding a future draft pick.

Star forward A'ja Wilson expressed frustration over the team's recurrent issues but emphasized their goal of improving the league. Coach Hammon and the team were not involved in the sponsorship negotiations, according to their statements.

โœˆ Southwest Airlines Announces New Nonstop Flights from Las Vegas to Rochester

Southwest Airlines is introducing a new nonstop service from Las Vegas to Rochester, New York, starting on October 3. The service will be available four times a week, marking the first direct flights from Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport to Harry Reid International Airport since 2008.

A Southwest spokesperson explained that the new service is part of the airline's revised flight schedule, influenced by the addition of new aircraft to their fleet and adjustments to meet travel demand between specific markets, including Rochester and Las Vegas.

Rochester is currently the largest unserved domestic market for Las Vegas. The new route will offer over 700 seats weekly on Southwestโ€™s 175-seat 737-8 aircraft, addressing this demand.

Southwest Airlines, operating around 270 daily flights to 66 destinations, remains the largest air service carrier in Las Vegas.

๐ŸŽฐ Best Vegas Souvenirs: Take a Piece of the Strip Home

Whether you're reminiscing about a memorable trip or looking for a unique keepsake, Las Vegas offers a variety of one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Here are some top picks:

1. Matchbooks Casino bars often provide matchbooks, harking back to a time when smoking was more common. These free, property-specific items are perfect collectibles. Gather a few and display them in a decorative jar.

2. Playerโ€™s Cards Sign up for a casinoโ€™s rewards program to receive a personalized playerโ€™s card, which includes your name and player ID. It's a more specific memento than a hotel room key card and a great way to remember your visit.

3. Poker Chips Play a small hand at a table game and keep some of the lower-value poker chips. Each casino has unique chips, often redesigned, making them excellent travel markers.

4. Playing Card Decks A classic gambler's gift, you can ask for used decks at casino cages or buy new ones at gift shops along the Strip. These cards are great for games and as souvenirs.

5. Coin Cups For those nostalgic for vintage Vegas, some casinos still offer plastic coin cups for their few remaining coin-operated slot machines. You'll need to visit specific properties to find these.

6. โ€˜Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegasโ€™ Lightbulbs For a truly unique memento, consider purchasing a lightbulb from the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Retailer Official Las Vegas Light offers bulbs used on the sign, and you can even select one from a specific date, going back as far as 2007.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Allegiant Stadium Seeks 1,500 Part-timers for Raiders Games and More

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is set to host a significant hiring event next week, aimed at filling 1,500 part-time positions to support its diverse lineup of events, including Las Vegas Raiders games and other major gatherings. The event, scheduled for May 22 and 23, will offer potential employees the chance to interview for roles in various departments such as retail, food service, security, ticketing, guest services, custodial services, and parking.

Neumiia Duncan-Reed, the Vice President of Human Resources and Community Affairs at Allegiant Stadium, emphasized the importance of this recruitment drive, noting that it reflects the stadium's commitment to building a dedicated and enthusiastic team. The hiring drive is particularly crucial as the stadium not only hosts NFL games and UNLV football but also major concerts and private events.

The event is part of an ongoing effort to maintain a robust workforce; in 2023, the stadium achieved a 70% employee retention rate. This high retention rate is attributed to the positive work environment and the sense of community among the staff. Duncan-Reed highlighted the unity and camaraderie that come with being part of the stadium's team as key factors in their retention success.

Applicants are encouraged to bring their resumes and come prepared for onsite interviews, which will take place directly on the field at Allegiant Stadium. This recruitment initiative is a great opportunity for those looking to be involved in the exciting atmosphere of one of Las Vegas's premier venues.
