๐ฉ Las Vegas Residents and Activists Rally for Climate Emergency Declaration and Worker Protections
In the face of another scorching summer, Las Vegas residents and activists gathered outside the Biden-Harris campaign office in North Las Vegas, demanding the Biden administration declare climate change a national emergency. The rally, attended by about 100 people from various states, also called for mandated worker protections against extreme heat.
Gerardo Velasquez, a 56-year-old solar panel installer in Las Vegas, has experienced firsthand the dangers of working in the heat without adequate breaks, shade, and hydration. His high blood pressure has forced him to turn down some work opportunities for fear of passing out. He expressed his frustration, stating, "It's outrageous what is happening."
The activists are pushing for two main demands. The first is the declaration of a national emergency on climate change, which could prioritize legislative solutions to the climate crisis. The second demand is for worker protections, following the lack of action from governors in Texas and Florida. They believe President Biden could use his executive power to push for legislation that would mandate breaks, shade, and water for workers across the country.
The Southern Nevada Health District reported about 300 heat-related deaths last year, a significant increase from 2022. Activists are calling for immediate action, with Make the Road Nevada's director of organizing, Rico Ocampo, stating, "We demand President Biden call for climate emergency now."
A Biden-Harris campaign spokesperson declined to comment on the demonstration but pointed to previous actions taken by the administration, such as rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and increasing workplace inspections for extreme heat conditions.
John Lee, a Republican candidate for Congress and former North Las Vegas mayor, opposed the activists' demands, arguing that a national emergency would be a distraction from other issues and that mandated worker protections would be an unnecessary burden on businesses.
Ben Leffel, a UNLV professor studying public policy related to sustainability, warned that the extreme heat in Las Vegas could deter tourists from visiting the city during the summer. He emphasized the need for both emissions reduction and adaptation to protect people in desert regions like Las Vegas.

๐ Aces Fall to Mercury in High-Stakes Rematch
The Las Vegas Aces experienced their first loss of the season on Tuesday, falling 98-88 to the Phoenix Mercury in a highly anticipated rematch. Despite the absence of the usual celebration of ring night, the stakes felt even higher as the two-time defending champions aimed to maintain their winning streak.
Guard Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 27 points, while shooting guard Jackie Young contributed 23 points. Forward A'ja Wilson added 21 points to the team's effort. However, Mercury guard Kahleah Copper proved to be a formidable opponent, scoring 37 points to lead the Mercury to victory.
Although the final score didn't reflect it, the game was closely contested, with the Aces cutting the Mercury's lead to two in the final minute after trailing by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter.
Here are three key takeaways from the Aces' loss:
Duo's heroics not enough
Plum and Young not only led the Aces in the box score but also maintained the team's energy throughout the game. Plum, known as "The Plum Dawg," demonstrated her hustle by diving for a loose ball late in the second half, even flying over the Mercury's bench. She made seven of the team's 11 3-pointers, setting a new record for the most 3-pointers in a game by an Aces player since the franchise relocated to Las Vegas.
Young, nicknamed the "Silent Assassin," was involved in a heated exchange with Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham in the second quarter. The altercation came as a surprise, given Young's reputation for keeping a low profile. Despite the incident, Young continued to showcase her skills, scoring 19 points, grabbing four rebounds, and dishing out three assists in the first half.
Mercury adjust
The Mercury adjusted their strategy from the season opener, taking an early lead and forcing the Aces to play catch-up. The Aces didn't take their first lead of the game until Sydney Colson assisted Kiah Stokes with a 3-pointer, followed by another on the next possession. However, the Mercury's defense managed to contain the Aces' offensive efforts.
Spirits still high
Despite the loss, the Aces' spirits remained high. Injured point guard Chelsea Gray was seen dancing on the jumbotron during a timeout, and Wilson entered the postgame news conference smiling and laughing with her parents. Coach Becky Hammon expressed that she wasn't overly concerned about the defeat, emphasizing the need for the team to focus on their defensive performance.
Wilson echoed Hammon's sentiment, stating that the off-court distractions, including a recent investigation into the team's sponsorship deal with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, were not to blame for the loss. Instead, she expressed gratitude for the game's challenge, suggesting it would help the team refocus on their performance.
๐ Public to Choose Student Artwork for Las Vegas Sphere's July 4 Display
For the first time in history, the public is being given the opportunity to select the artwork that will be showcased on the Las Vegas Sphere's exosphere for the Fourth of July. This groundbreaking initiative allows individuals worldwide to participate in choosing the imagery that will adorn the building's exterior. The Sphere XO Student Design Challenge, a collaborative effort between the Sphere, the Clark County School District, and UNLV, has garnered over 100 submissions from students across various educational levels, including elementary school, middle school, high school, and college.
The challenge, which centers around a Fourth of July theme, is open for voting until June 5 at 11:59 p.m. People can cast their votes at thesphere.com/xo-student-design-challenge. The winning students' artwork will be unveiled on the exosphere on July 4, 2024. This initiative not only highlights the creativity and talent of the participating students but also underscores the Sphere's commitment to engaging the public in the world of art and technology.
๐ฐ๐ฐ Double Jackpot Wins at Downtown Las Vegas Casino
On Sunday, two lucky individuals struck it rich at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas. The first winner was a local Las Vegan who walked away with a nearly $220,000 prize while playing Pai Gow poker. The player had started with a $200 buy-in and managed to hit a 7-card straight flush, which led to a total progressive hit of over $206,000. Additionally, a Fortune Bonus bet of $12,500 contributed to the substantial win.
The second winner was a visitor from California who was in town to attend the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC). This lucky guest won a $45,000 progressive jackpot on a Buffalo slot machine after placing a modest $2.25 bet.
Both winners' incredible luck and substantial winnings serve as a reminder of the excitement and potential rewards that can come from a visit to a Las Vegas casino.
๐ฒ Allegiant Stadium Seeks 1,500 Part-timers for Raiders Games and More
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is set to host a significant hiring event next week, aimed at filling 1,500 part-time positions to support its diverse lineup of events, including Las Vegas Raiders games and other major gatherings. The event, scheduled for May 22 and 23, will offer potential employees the chance to interview for roles in various departments such as retail, food service, security, ticketing, guest services, custodial services, and parking.
Neumiia Duncan-Reed, the Vice President of Human Resources and Community Affairs at Allegiant Stadium, emphasized the importance of this recruitment drive, noting that it reflects the stadium's commitment to building a dedicated and enthusiastic team. The hiring drive is particularly crucial as the stadium not only hosts NFL games and UNLV football but also major concerts and private events.
The event is part of an ongoing effort to maintain a robust workforce; in 2023, the stadium achieved a 70% employee retention rate. This high retention rate is attributed to the positive work environment and the sense of community among the staff. Duncan-Reed highlighted the unity and camaraderie that come with being part of the stadium's team as key factors in their retention success.
Applicants are encouraged to bring their resumes and come prepared for onsite interviews, which will take place directly on the field at Allegiant Stadium. This recruitment initiative is a great opportunity for those looking to be involved in the exciting atmosphere of one of Las Vegas's premier venues. For more information, visit here.
