❎ Early Voting Kicks Off in Clark County, Nevada for Primary Election
Early voting for the primary election in Clark County, Nevada, kicked off on Saturday, with various polling stations across the Las Vegas Valley opening their doors to voters. The primary election will help narrow down the General Election matchups, and some local issues, such as the potential 30-year extensions of property taxes in North Las Vegas, are on the ballot.
Local residents expressed their enthusiasm for early voting, citing the convenience and the importance of participating in the democratic process. Richard Leavitt, a voter, emphasized the importance of voting early, saying, "I don’t know if I’m going to be alive tomorrow." His wife, Carolyn Leavitt, added that they were excited to see a "good change" in leadership, with a focus on fiscal responsibility and an "America first" approach.
Forrest Perkins, another voter, highlighted the ease of early voting, saying, "I could be in there and think about it and not have anybody pushing me; hurrying me up." Perkins also stressed the importance of voting, saying, "There are so many people who died trying to vote and I just feel bad not to make some kind of effort because people have died for that privilege."
Randall Freeman and his wife also chose to vote early, dropping off their mail-in ballots. Freeman said, "It’s great, it’s easy, simple," adding that he wanted to get his "opinions registered."
Early voting will continue until June 7, and Election Day is scheduled for June 11, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eligible residents who haven't registered to vote can do so onsite and cast their ballot the same day, as long as they provide Nevada identification with their current address.

👩🏀 Caitlin Clark Makes Las Vegas Debut in Indiana Fever's Loss to Defending Champion Aces
Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever rookie and former University of Iowa star, made her Las Vegas debut in a game against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Despite her excitement to play in the city, the Fever lost to the Aces 99-80. The Aces' star forward A'ja Wilson led the team with 29 points and 15 rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell was the highest scorer for the Fever with 16 points. Clark recorded eight points, five rebounds, seven assists, and six turnovers in the matchup.
The game was notable for featuring three former Iowa Hawkeyes: Megan Gustafson and Kate Martin of the Aces and Clark. The matchup also included three of the top four all-time scorers in women's college basketball history: Clark, Kelsey Plum of the Aces, and Dyaisha Fair of the Aces.
The Aces improved their record to 3-1, while the Fever fell to 1-6. Despite the loss, Clark expressed excitement about her first visit to Las Vegas and the atmosphere of the sold-out crowd.
The Aces' victory was highlighted by their strong defensive performance, holding the Fever to 37.1 percent from the 3-point line. Wilson, Plum, and Young each scored over 20 points, tying a WNBA record for a trio. Aces coach Becky Hammon praised her team's defensive effort and Martin's performance, noting the confidence Wilson instills in her teammates.
Hammon also addressed comments made by NBA star LeBron James and former players-turned-analysts Charles Barkley and JJ Redick about the WNBA's treatment of Clark. She emphasized that there is no hate towards Clark in the WNBA and that the league celebrates her accomplishments. Hammon also clarified that her comments were meant to highlight the need to celebrate Black and brown greatness in the sport.
🎰 Nevada Gaming Control Board's Secrecy Under Fire for Blocking Transparency
The Nevada Gaming Control Board, responsible for licensing and overseeing the state's casino industry, operates under a special exemption in Nevada Revised Statutes that guarantees confidentiality on all records involving work conducted by its Enforcement and Investigations divisions. This unique provision prevents transparency and accountability in a government agency tasked with regulating the state's top industry.
The Investigations Division reviews the background of applicants and prospective key employees to assess their suitability for licensure or approval. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Division investigates casino crime and monitors potential organized crime connections, making recommendations for the state's List of Excluded Persons.
The confidentiality of records is guided by rules within NRS 463.120, the statute addressing the licensing and control of gaming. David Cuillier, director of the Brechner Freedom of Information Project at the University of Florida, has criticized this legislation, arguing that it hinders transparency and accountability.
Special interests, particularly corporate interests, have historically inserted exemptions in public record laws, making it difficult for the public to access information. This lack of transparency is particularly concerning in the gaming industry, which is crucial to Nevada's economy.
Recently, reporters have been unable to obtain key information about the investigation of former MGM Grand and Resorts World executive Scott Sibella. The Nevada Gaming Control Board filed a complaint against Sibella, but the public may never learn the full details due to the confidentiality of the records.
Michael Green, an associate professor of history at UNLV, explained that the confidentiality provisions were established in the 1950s to eliminate organized crime from the casino industry. However, these provisions have since prevented the public from accessing information on various high-profile cases, including allegations against Steve Wynn.
Cuillier argues that there is a significant public interest in Nevada's gaming industry and that the public should demand legislative change to enable better access to Control Board information. He believes that transparency and accountability are crucial for ensuring the integrity of the gaming industry in the state.
😋 Las Vegas Strip Restaurant Holsteins to Close After 13 Years, Teases New Concept
Holsteins, a popular restaurant known for its extravagant burgers and milkshakes, will be closing its doors on July 9 after more than a decade of operation inside The Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas Strip. The restaurant, which opened in 2010, is owned by Gen3 Hospitality.
Stacia Stephens, president of Gen3 Hospitality, announced the closure and mentioned that details on a new concept would be revealed in the coming months. The company has not yet disclosed the specific reasons for the closure or the nature of the new concept that will replace Holsteins.
A WARN notice filed with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation revealed that 94 employees would be affected by the closure. However, the company has stated that all current Holsteins team members will be encouraged to reapply at the new establishment.
This closure comes as a surprise to many fans of the restaurant, who have enjoyed the unique dining experience offered by Holsteins over the years. The Las Vegas Strip has seen numerous changes in recent years, with new restaurants and attractions constantly emerging. It remains to be seen what the new concept will bring t
