๐ฉ๐ WNBA Champions Aces Tackle First Road Games with Reduced Roster
The Las Vegas Aces, reigning back-to-back WNBA champions, are set to embark on their first road trip of the season after a four-game homestand. They will face the Minnesota Lynx, Atlanta Dream, and Dallas Wings in the upcoming three-game stretch.
Key Points:
Road Trip Details: The Aces will play against the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday at 5 p.m., followed by games against Atlanta and Dallas.
Travel Arrangements: Thanks to the WNBAโs new charter program, the team is traveling via private flights, enhancing comfort and convenience.
Injury Challenges: The Aces are currently down to nine healthy players. Rookie guard Dyaisha Fair was waived on Sunday, and point guard Chelsea Gray remains sidelined with a lower-left leg injury. Forward Kierstan Bell is also out with a lower right-leg injury.
Chelsea Gray's Status: Gray, the 2022 WNBA Finals MVP, is in a precautionary boot for public appearances due to her injury. She has been seen without the boot at recent games and is taking her recovery slowly.
Kierstan Bell's Injury: Bell, who has been dealing with Achilles issues, will likely be out for a couple more weeks due to an ankle injury sustained during training camp.
Team Dynamics: Despite their injuries, Gray continues to contribute by coaching guards Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum from the sidelines, helping maintain team morale and strategy.
Upcoming Opponent: The Lynx, who will face the Aces first on this road trip, are a formidable team, scoring the second-most points per game and allowing the second-fewest in the WNBA.
๐ฒ Atomic Golf Faces Layoffs Amid Competitive Las Vegas Market
Atomic Golf, a high-tech golfing range located at The Strat in Las Vegas, has announced layoffs just months after its opening in late March.
Key Points:
Layoffs Announced: Atomic Golf confirmed recent layoffs but did not specify the number of employees affected or the reasons behind the decision.
Initial Hiring Plans: The venue had announced plans to hire over 500 employees before its opening and employed around 800 full- and part-time staff in March.
Venue Details: The 100,000-square-foot, $75 million attraction features 103 golf bays, six bars, a local beer-tap room, and a full-service kitchen, aiming to offer a video-game-like golfing experience.
Competitive Landscape: Atomic Golf joins other golf-focused entertainment venues in Las Vegas, including Topgolf near the MGM Grand and the recently opened PopStroke at Town Square, backed by Tiger Woods.
Statement from Atomic Golf:
"We can confirm that there have been recent layoffs at Atomic Golf Las Vegas. We appreciate the dedication and contributions of all our employees and extend our gratitude to those who have been impacted."
Context:
Economic Challenges: Layoffs in new businesses can stem from various factors, including economic challenges, operational adjustments, and market conditions.
Industry Competition: The competition in the entertainment golf industry in Las Vegas is robust, with several venues offering unique experiences to attract customers.
๐ฐ Mirage Volcano to be Demolished for Hard Rock's Guitar-Shaped Hotel Tower
The iconic Mirage volcano on the Las Vegas Strip is slated for demolition to make way for Hard Rock International's new 660-foot tall, guitar-shaped hotel tower.
Key Points:
Demolition Plans: The transformation of the Mirage into the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas will begin with the removal of the hourly volcano show, a landmark attraction along Las Vegas Boulevard.
Project Timeline: The Mirage will close on July 17 for a three-year renovation period. Permits for grading and dust control were issued on May 20, with the project needing to start by November 16.
Construction Details: The new structure will feature an all-suite hotel tower shaped like back-to-back guitars and include extensive renovations inside the main building.
Contractors: Vegas Civil LLC will handle the grading for the guitar podium pad, guitar tower pad, valet building, and other improvements. The PENTA Building Group is responsible for removing the volcano fountain and constructing the new hotel tower.
Background: Hard Rock acquired The Mirage operations from MGM Resorts International in December 2022 for over $1 billion. Vici Properties owns The Mirage's real estate, with an initial annual rent of $90 million agreed upon in the lease with Hard Rock.
Additional Information:
Grading Work: This includes preparing the land for construction, specifically for the guitar-shaped tower and related structures.
Construction Scope: The largest part of the construction will involve expanding the podium at the front of the resort to support the new guitar tower.
