๐ฎ๐ผโโ๏ธ Las Vegas Police Welcome 64 New Officers in Emotional Ceremony
Clad in uniforms and minutes away from receiving their badges, the Metropolitan Police Department's newest recruits began their graduation ceremony stone-faced. Over an hour later, badges pinned, they laughed, shouted, and hugged as they were officially dismissed from the academy and became Metro police officers.
The November recruit class graduated Wednesday at the Las Vegas Convention Center, supported by a large crowd of family, friends, and fellow officers. The 64 new recruits, aged 21 to 50, come from diverse backgrounds, including various U.S. territories and foreign countries. Sixteen recruits are bilingual, and fifteen are parents. Lt. Richard Meyers highlighted this diversity as essential for serving the Las Vegas community effectively.
Many recruits took pay cuts to join the police force, driven by a strong desire to serve the community. Meyers introduced class speaker Brian Chung, a former National Guard member, who emphasized the importance of receiving help and teamwork in their journey.
In December, the recruits experienced a pivotal moment during the UNLV shooting incident, reinforcing the reality and gravity of their future roles. Chung shared that the incident made him reflect on the courage needed to face such threats, affirming his commitment to protect the community.
The November cohort dedicated their class to Officer Jason Swanger, who died of COVID-19 complications in 2021. Swanger's family attended the ceremony, providing blue bracelets to all recruits and staff.
After receiving their badges amid loud cheers, the new officers were sworn in, followed by all law enforcement officers in attendance, reciting an oath to uphold their integrity and accountability.
Undersheriff Andrew Walsh remarked on the large turnout and the department's progress in filling officer positions, projecting only a 2 to 2.5 percent vacancy rate after the August recruits join.

๐ฅ Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson Fight Moved to November 17
The highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has been rescheduled from Saturday to Friday, November 17, due to scheduling conflicts with the Dallas Cowboys, who will host the Houston Texans for Monday Night Football on November 18.
Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, announced that the new date ensures both fighters have adequate preparation time and allows the event to remain at AT&T Stadium during the Cowboys' season.
Mike Tyson, who last fought professionally in June 2005, has been training regularly and participated in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020.
๐๏ธ F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Announces Modifications to Controversial Flamingo Bridge
The Las Vegas Grand Prix has announced changes to the controversial temporary bridge on Flamingo Road over Koval Lane. For this year's race, the bridge will be reduced from four lanes to two, and the pedestrian bridge will be relocated to the north side of the Flamingo/Koval intersection, rather than the south side used last year. These adjustments were made in collaboration with Clark County Public Works and emergency management officials, including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.
Renee Wilm, CEO of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, stated that the new bridge design aims to reduce disruption for nearby businesses while maintaining essential access for emergency responders. However, some local businesses claim they were not informed about these changes. One business reported that while meetings with Formula 1 were scheduled, specific details about the bridge modifications were not provided.
Race officials plan to install the bridge in mid-October and dismantle it by mid-December, with each phase expected to take seven days. Construction for the race is set to begin in September.
โ๏ธ Prominent Nevada Law Firm McDonald Carano Marks 75th Anniversary
Last month, McDonald Carano, a leading Nevada law firm with offices in Reno, Las Vegas, and Carson City, marked its 75th anniversary. The firm, which began in 1949 as Bible & McDonald, was founded by WWII fighter pilot Bob McDonald and Alan Bible, a U.S. Senator from Nevada for 20 years. Don Carano joined in 1962, becoming a partner the following year.
The Carano family founded Eldorado Resorts in the early 1970s, with its flagship Eldorado hotel-casino in Reno celebrating its 51st anniversary recently. In 2020, the Carano casino group acquired Caesars Entertainment Corp. for $17.3 billion, rebranding Eldorado as Caesars Entertainment Inc., making it the largest gaming operator in the U.S.
McDonald Carano's strong presence in Nevada's legal and gaming sectors includes representing Hard Rock International in its acquisition of The Mirage in 2021 and Liberty Media Corp. in bringing the Las Vegas Grand Prix to the Strip in 2022. The firm also handles various other legal matters, from employment law to real estate.
The firm prides itself on its long-standing Nevada heritage and commitment to the community. More than 80% of its staff are native Nevadans, and many members contribute through pro bono and charitable work. Managing partner George Ogilvie III attributes the firm's longevity to the culture instilled by Bob McDonald, which has helped maintain its independence and close-knit, family-like environment.
