✅ Sam Brown Wins GOP Senate Primary, Faces Sen. Jacky Rosen in November
Sam Brown, the GOP frontrunner, clinched the Senate primary race on Tuesday, setting up a closely watched contest against Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in November. Brown, backed by Gov. Joe Lombardo and former President Donald Trump, secured approximately 59% of the vote as of 11:40 p.m., according to The Associated Press. His nearest competitors, Dr. Jeff Gunter and former Assemblyman Jim Marchant, trailed behind.
"I'm thankful to everyone who propelled us to victory tonight, and I invite all Nevadans to stand with us as we work toward victory in November," Brown stated on Tuesday night.
Despite lower voter turnout compared to previous primaries, Nevada's election process showed signs of improved efficiency with early result announcements. Besides the Senate race, voters participated in various local elections, including those for Las Vegas mayor and Clark County School Board.
Key Election Results:
Las Vegas Mayor's Race: Shelley Berkley led with 35.3% of the vote, followed by Councilwoman Victoria Seaman with 29.5%, and Councilman Cedric Crear with 18.7%. If no candidate surpasses 50%, the top two will advance to the general election.
3rd Congressional District: Conservative policy analyst Drew Johnson won the GOP primary, setting up a November race against Democratic Rep. Susie Lee.
1st Congressional District: Retired U.S. Army Col. Mark Robertson will challenge Democratic Rep. Dina Titus after securing 48.4% of the vote.
4th Congressional District: Former North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee led with 48.1%, closely followed by David Flippo at 45.4%.
Efforts to Improve Election Efficiency:
Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar emphasized efforts to expedite the release of election results by starting early vote tabulations on Election Day. The quick turnaround in results is seen as a positive step for the state.
Voter Turnout:
Voter turnout was notably lower than in past primaries, with about 16% of Nevada's total electorate participating. This marks a decline from the 29.5% turnout in the 2020 primary and the nearly 26% in the 2022 primary.
Voter Perspectives:
Despite the low turnout, those who voted expressed a range of motivations and concerns. From enthusiastic support for Trump to worries about democracy and reproductive rights, Nevadans demonstrated a broad spectrum of political engagement.
🏀 Aces Fall to Lynx 100-86, Marking Third Straight Defeat
In pursuit of their third consecutive WNBA title, the Las Vegas Aces faced a setback with a 100-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night at Michelob Ultra Arena. Despite A’ja Wilson’s impressive 28-point, eight-rebound performance, the Aces (5-5) struggled, marking their third straight regular-season loss — a first since August 2019.
Game Highlights:
Aces' Performance: Wilson extended her streak of games with at least 20 points to 15. Kelsey Plum was the second-highest scorer for the Aces with 13 points.
Lynx's Productivity: Alanna Smith led the Lynx (9-3) with 18 points, supported by four teammates scoring 14 or more.
First Quarter Lead: The Aces led 31-29 after the first quarter, shooting 70% from the 3-point line. However, they trailed 59-48 by halftime, allowing the most first-half points since 2020.
Shooting Percentages: The Lynx shot 62.9% in the first half, the highest against the Aces since 2018, and finished 55.6% from beyond the arc. The Aces shot 32.3% from three-point range.
Takeaways from the Game:
1. 'Fighting for Joy'
Following the loss, Aces’ coach Becky Hammon and players expressed concerns about the team's morale. Plum acknowledged the team's struggle to find joy, and both she and Hammon pointed to defensive issues from the start of the season. Despite the frustrations, Wilson maintained faith in the team.
2. Perimeter Problems
The Aces struggled defensively on the perimeter, with the Lynx capitalizing by shooting 61.1% from three-point range by the third quarter. Minnesota leads the league in three-pointers and points per game, underscoring the Aces' defensive lapses.
3. Olympic Pedigree
USA Basketball announced that A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray were named to the 2024 U.S. Olympic women’s team. This mirrors the 2016 Lynx squad, which also had four players selected. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in Hammon's ability to manage the pressure.
Next Steps:
The Aces, now 1-3 in Commissioner’s Cup play, will face the Phoenix Mercury in their final in-season tournament game on Thursday.
⚡ NV Energy's Greenlink West Clears Major Hurdle, Edges Closer to Construction
NV Energy's ambitious Greenlink West project, a massive energy transmission initiative, has moved closer to construction following the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) completion of its final environmental impact analysis. This project includes building 472 miles of transmission lines between Las Vegas and Reno.
Project Highlights:
Transmission Capacity: The Greenlink West project could transmit enough clean energy to power 1.2 million homes.
Route: The transmission lines will pass through several Nevada counties, including Clark, Esmeralda, Lyon, Mineral, Nye, Storey, and Washoe.
Current Status: The environmental analysis is a crucial step before BLM officials can approve construction. The analysis report is expected to be released soon.
Next Steps:
Protest Period: There will be a protest period ending on July 15.
Governor's Review: A 60-day governor’s consistency review will conclude on August 13.
Final Decision: A final decision on the route is anticipated later this year, with the project targeted for completion by the end of 2026.
Significance:
Energy Reliability: NV Energy CEO Doug Cannon emphasized that the project will enhance electric reliability and ensure stable energy supply during peak times.
Renewable Energy: The Greenlink infrastructure will facilitate the addition of renewable energy resources by unlocking thousands of acres previously unavailable due to transmission limitations.
Financial Considerations:
Cost Increase: The cost of the Greenlink West project has surged to $4.24 billion, up from the initial estimate of $2.5 billion.
Broader Impact:
The Greenlink West project is part of NV Energy’s larger Greenlink Nevada initiative, which aims to create a network of large-scale transmission lines throughout the state, boosting the integration of renewable energy and improving the overall energy infrastructure.
✈ Richard Branson Launches New Virgin Atlantic Route Between Manchester and Las Vegas
Virgin Atlantic has relaunched its long-haul route between Manchester, England, and Las Vegas, marking the airline’s second connection to the city. To commemorate the occasion and celebrate the airline’s 40th anniversary, Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson visited Las Vegas this week.
Branson expressed his fondness for the city during his visit. “Las Vegas (has) many, many happy memories as I’m sure other people do, and maybe some not-that-happy memories,” he joked.
Route Details:
Service Resumption: Virgin Atlantic restarted nonstop flights from Manchester to Las Vegas on June 2.
Flight Schedule: The route operates three times a week — on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Aircraft: Flights are on an Airbus A350, which can carry 397 passengers.
Significance of the Route:
Tourism Boost: The U.K. is the largest overseas market for Las Vegas tourism, accounting for nearly 12% of international visitors, equating to approximately 551,550 visitors in 2023. This figure is still 26% lower than 2019 levels.
Market Demand: Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Commercial Officer Juha Järvinen highlighted that the decision to restart the route was driven by the recovery of travel demand post-pandemic. “People want to travel again and they love Las Vegas,” Järvinen said.
Business and Convention Travel:
Although less than 10% of Virgin Atlantic’s passengers to Las Vegas are business travelers, there has been an increase in business travel and convention attendance, further justifying the route’s resumption.
Additional Announcements:
New Routes: Virgin Atlantic also announced new daily routes between London and Toronto.
Key Figures at the Event:
Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group founder
Shai Weiss, Virgin Atlantic CEO
Steve Hill, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO
James Bermingham, Virgin Hotels Collection CEOproperty for three years to build a new guitar-shaped hotel tower.
