🐶 Las Vegas Shelter Faces Overcrowding, Urgently Seeks Adopters and Fosters
The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas has taken in nearly 1,000 animals in the first 12 days of June, prompting the use of emergency pop-up kennels due to overcrowding. The shelter, which reported that 68% of these animals are strays, is urgently seeking adopters and fosters to manage the population and ensure the well-being of the animals. On Wednesday night alone, they received 38 dogs from one home, pushing their capacity past critical levels. The shelter will host a foster event on Friday, urging residents to foster medium or large dogs for 2-4 weeks, with all supplies provided.
A Las Vegas shelter, The Animal Foundation, advised on Wednesday that in the first 12 days of June it had already taken in nearly 1,000 animals. According to a post shared on The Animal Foundation’s social media pages, the shelter is using emergency pop-up kennels to temporarily house its new arrivals because its facilities are so full.
“Since the beginning of June, we’ve taken in 989 animals,” The Animal Foundation said, adding that on Tuesday alone they took in 167 animals.
Of the nearly 1,000 animals they have taken in thus far in June, 68% have been strays, the shelter said.
“We need adopters AND fosters to keep our shelter population at a manageable level to ensure the well-being of our animals and our team,” The Animal Foundation said in the post.
The photos shared by the group show kennels that are placed in hallways and covered with sheets or towels to help lessen the noise in the shelter.
In an update on Thursday, The Animal Foundation shared that late Wednesday night the shelter received 38 dogs from one home, including one nursing mom and her four puppies, and four pregnant dogs.
Now, The Animal Foundation says it is currently at 853 animals in its care, putting them “PAST CRITICAL capacity.”
The shelter is hosting a foster event from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday as it looks to free up kennel space in its facilities.
The group is asking residents to consider fostering a medium or large dog for 2-4 weeks to give them a break from the “noisy” shelter.
Fostering the animals is free and The Animal Foundation said it will provide everything that is needed.
The group also noted in the comments on their Facebook posts that all animals must be up to date on vaccines before they can leave for their foster home.
“Even a short time away from the shelter helps a dog decompress,” The Animal Foundation said in addressing a common concern. “It doesn’t cause any extra stress when they come back.”
🏀 WNBA Champs Aces Await Chelsea Gray’s Return Amid Losing Streak
For the first time since October 2023, Chelsea Gray’s status on the Aces’ injury report was upgraded to “questionable” on Wednesday.
And just like that, conversations surrounding the WNBA’s two-time reigning champions shifted. The Aces (5-5) suffered their third consecutive loss Tuesday night at the hands of the Minnesota Lynx, but with Gray seemingly nearing her season debut, the floodgates of optimistic social media posts from fans have opened once again.
That’s the power of the “Point Gawd.”
Gray might make her season debut when the Aces play at the Phoenix Mercury (6-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The 31-year-old is joining three other Aces All-Stars at the 2024 Paris Olympics on the U.S. women’s basketball team, whose roster was officially revealed Tuesday. In the lead-up to that announcement, Gray’s teammates and others across the league emphasized her importance to the U.S. and the Aces.
Cheryl Reeve, Lynx coach and president of basketball operations, is leading the coaching staff for the Olympic team. After observing Gray during the 2021 Tokyo Games, Reeve said the guard is key to Team USA’s success this year.
“She was the heir apparent. She was still playing behind Sue (Bird) on that last one,” Reeve said before Tuesday’s game. “Now, the team is hers.”
It’s an unexpected development from Gray’s perspective, as she is one of just four players on Team USA who wasn’t a No. 1 overall WNBA draft pick. A knee injury cut her senior year at Duke short, and she was selected at No. 11 by the Connecticut Sun in 2014.
“Whether I’m playing or not right now — being one of 12 to put on an Olympic jersey? I’ll never take that for granted,” Gray told the Review-Journal on Tuesday. “I didn’t think it was going to end up like this when I first started in this profession. It’s crazy.”
Gray is faced with the pressure of leading a national team seeking its eighth straight Olympic gold medal (10th overall). But Reeve said she doesn’t feel that Gray, a three-time WNBA champion and the 2022 Finals MVP, has much to learn.
“It’s just more of, you know, getting her there,” Reeve said. “Her leadership, her voice — just like what you see with the Aces — when she’s on the floor, everybody’s better, and that’s what she brings to the national team.”
Without their point guard for their first 10 games, the Aces have clearly missed the Gray effect to which Reeve alluded.
Gray was sidelined for the title-clinching Game 4 of the 2023 Finals against the New York Liberty because of a left foot injury. She was able to participate in the U.S. national team’s February 2024 training camp, but couldn’t compete in the 2024 FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament.
Gray has yet to participate in any Aces practices that media could view, but she has gradually been incorporated into team warmups and drills.
The slow ramp-up has been somewhat against Gray’s will, Aces coach Becky Hammon said.
“She’s progressing,” Hammon said last week. “Probably not as fast as she wants, but I’m trying to hold her back as long as possible to be just extra cautious. She’s chomping at the bit to get back out there and get out there with her teammates.”
The Aces’ Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson, all also headed to the Olympics, have frequently referred to Gray as a second coach on the sideline this season. Following a loss to the Seattle Storm on Friday, Hammon said the team wasn’t “whole” without its point guard.
“I think people are guarding us differently because she’s not out there,” Plum said after Tuesday’s loss. “But I also think a lot of the wounds that we have are self-inflicted.”
With Gray’s new status, the Aces are approaching a new reality on the court.
“She’s the best point guard in the world,” Hammon said Sunday in response to a question about what fans could expect to see from Gray in her return.
Los Angeles Sparks coach Curt Miller, a scout for the Olympic team, used the same descriptor to talk about Gray earlier this season.
Hammon added: “She sees everything. A headband of eyeballs. That’s how good her vision is. So I can’t wait for them to see her play. She’s magical.”

📺 "The ‘Friends’ Experience" Set to Open at MGM Grand in Las Vegas
"The ‘Friends’ Experience," a popular attraction featuring re-creations of iconic sets and props from the hit TV show "Friends," is set to open at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This will be the third permanent location for the experience, after New York and an upcoming London venue. Visitors can explore sets like Central Perk, Monica’s apartment, and the famous fountain, as well as special Vegas-themed sets from the show's episodes filmed in the city. The attraction aims to offer a nostalgic and interactive experience for fans of the series.
Central Perk. Monica’s apartment. That fountain she and the others were always splashing around in during the opening credits.
Re-creations of those and other sets, along with original props and costumes, will be there for you, ready to fill up your Instagram, when “The ‘Friends’ Experience” opens this year at the MGM Grand.
A touring version has visited 22 cities in eight countries, but the Las Vegas attraction will be just the third permanent one, following the original location in New York and the one that will open this summer in London.
“Vegas really has everything that we look for in a new market in terms of audience, visitors, entertainment, attractions,” says Stacy Moscatelli, CEO of Original X Productions, which produces the attraction. “More than 40 million people visited Las Vegas last year, and we want to be an entertainment option for those guests.”
Other examples of what Moscatelli calls “the big hits” that visitors can expect from the series include re-creations of Chandler and Joey’s apartment and the narrow stairway in Ross’ apartment building, complete with a sofa wedged in it. “People love to re-enact (that scene),” Moscatelli says, “get a photo with their friends and scream ‘Pivot!’ at each other.”
The two-story attraction will dedicate part of its space to the four-episode arc in 1999 that brought the characters to Las Vegas, where Joey was supposed to have the lead role in a movie filming outside of town.
A version of the wedding chapel set where Ross and Rachel drunkenly married will be there, with the taxi Phoebe and Joey (and a hitchhiker) drove back to New York.
“We’ve got those kind of key things and a few others that we’ll be bringing that are Vegas-specific,” Moscatelli says.
That includes having a bit of Caesars Palace inside the MGM Grand.
When Joey’s movie ran out of money, he got a job at Caesars, where he wore a gladiator costume and posed for photos. A reproduction of that costume, though, will have to do.
“We have a decent amount of originals that we were able to secure through Warner Bros.’ archives team,” Moscatelli says, “but, unfortunately, they didn’t have that costume.”
“Friends” remains extraordinarily popular, even as it approaches the 30th anniversary of its debut on Sept. 22, 1994.
“Really, it’s just a fun time with friends and family,” Moscatelli says of the attraction. “People revisit ‘Friends,’ they revisit the ’90s. They get to create some of those scenes and moments from the show.”
“The ‘Friends’ Experience” is coming to The District at MGM Grand, near the arena, in a space that previously housed “CSI: The Experience” and “The Hunger Games: The Exhibition.” There’s no specific opening date, Moscatelli says, beyond “probably late fall.”
