🌤 Summerlin South, Las Vegas 10-Day Weather Forecast
⛽ Las Vegas Gas Prices
🌡 Las Vegas Faces Hazy Conditions Due to California's Post Fire
Las Vegas experienced hazy conditions on Sunday due to the Post Fire burning north of Los Angeles, which has consumed more than 3,600 acres since it ignited on Saturday afternoon.
Air Quality Concerns
The Clark County Division of Air Quality reported unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter throughout the Las Vegas Valley on Sunday morning. The east valley recorded the highest pollutant levels. In response, the division has maintained a seasonal air quality advisory, effective from April 1 through September 30, addressing concerns related to ozone and wildfire smoke.
Red Flag Warning
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning for nearby regions, indicating critical fire weather conditions, including strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures. The warnings cover:
Mohave County, Arizona: From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.
Southeastern Utah: From noon to 9 p.m. MDT on Sunday.
Northwestern Nevada: From 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions due to the increased fire risk.
Precautionary Measures
Given the poor air quality, residents of Las Vegas are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially those with respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly. Staying indoors with windows closed and using air purifiers can help reduce exposure to harmful particulates.
The ongoing Post Fire and resulting haze serve as a reminder of the broader impacts of wildfires, even on communities hundreds of miles away.
🏀 Aces Fall to Liberty in Intense Rematch of WNBA Finals
A’ja Wilson, the passionate leader of the Las Vegas Aces, broke down in tears after a tough 90-82 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday afternoon at Michelob Ultra Arena. This was the first meeting between the two teams since the Aces triumphed over the Liberty in the 2023 WNBA Finals, making the stakes feel particularly high.
Wilson's Emotional Performance
Wilson scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, continuing her impressive streak of games with at least 20 points, which now stands at 17. Her record streak of eight consecutive games with 25 points or more ended against the Liberty. Despite her strong performance, Wilson was visibly emotional after the game, expressing her deep commitment to her teammates and her frustration with the team's defensive struggles.
“I don’t even know why I’m crying,” Wilson said. “But I love my teammates so much that I will take any hit. Good, bad, ugly. I’m gonna go out there and I’m gonna try to be the best.”
Key Highlights and Challenges
Kelsey Plum led the Aces (6-6) with 22 points, while Jonquel Jones scored a career-high 34 points for the Liberty (12-2) in front of a record crowd of 10,424 fans. Reigning MVP Breanna Stewart contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Liberty.
The game showcased the Aces' inconsistent play, as highlighted by coach Becky Hammon. Despite leading briefly in the third quarter, the Aces failed to maintain their momentum, allowing the Liberty to take control with a 14-0 run.
“We’re not a good team because we have zero consistency,” Hammon said. She also emphasized that the team’s mentality and competitive edge have been lacking since training camp.
Star-Studded Audience
The intense matchup drew a star-studded audience, including NBA stars LeBron James, John Wall, Damian Lillard, and Bam Adebayo. James recently praised Wilson as the “absolute best” after her historic performance against the Dallas Wings, where she recorded at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
Upcoming Challenges
The Aces have struggled with consistency this season, having already lost as many games as they did in the entire previous regular season (34-6). Optimism surrounds the potential return of point guard Chelsea Gray, who has been sidelined since Game 3 of the 2023 Finals due to a lower left leg injury. Although upgraded to questionable status, Gray did not play in Saturday’s game.
“Some of our problems she can’t fix because it’s internal, it’s individual,” Hammon said, stressing that the team's issues are deeply rooted in their mentality and approach to the game.
The Aces will next host the Seattle Storm at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Michelob Ultra Arena.
🎰 UAE Positioned as the New Epicenter of Luxury Gaming Resorts
The late 1990s saw Southern Nevada beginning to view Macao as "the Las Vegas of the East." Today, a similar transformation is anticipated for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is emerging as "the Las Vegas of the Mideast."
Sands' Early Success in Macao
Las Vegas Sands Corp. was an early entrant in Macao, a 12.7-square-mile enclave in southeastern China, handed over from Portuguese to Chinese control on December 20, 1999. This transition opened Macao's gaming market to competition, leading to Sands becoming a dominant player.
Sheldon Adelson, then Chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, introduced the "Cotai Strip" concept, drawing inspiration from the Las Vegas Strip. Sands filled Seac Pai Bay between Coloane and Taipa islands to create this area, anchored by The Venetian Macao, which mirrors but surpasses its Las Vegas counterpart in size and scope.
UAE: The Next Frontier
Approximately 3,600 miles west of Macao lies Dubai, the UAE's largest city. A recent 64-page report by Las Vegas-based CBRE Capital Advisors highlights the UAE as the next major gaming frontier. The report suggests that the UAE offers an operator-friendly environment with a progressive approach to investment and tourism. Analysts foresee an efficient regulatory process, unlike the delays seen in jurisdictions like New York and Japan. Combined with robust economic growth and limited regional gaming competition, the UAE presents a highly attractive opportunity for integrated resorts (IRs).
Wynn Resorts Leading the Way
Wynn Resorts Ltd. appears to be the frontrunner in the UAE's nascent gaming market, particularly in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates. Wynn Design and Development, in collaboration with Marjan and RAK Hospitality Holding, is constructing a 1,542-room luxury hotel on Al Marjan Island. This nearly 1,000-foot tower is expected to open in 2027, with the structure already reaching 130 feet as of early May.
CBRE analysts predict that Wynn Al Marjan Island will yield strong returns, high property margins, and a significant non-gaming revenue mix, surpassing that of Macao and potentially even Singapore's integrated resorts. This projection is based on robust demand, favorable regulatory conditions, and minimal direct competition.
Potential Market Expansion
Should other emirates follow Ras Al Khaimah's lead, additional Las Vegas-based companies may enter the UAE market. CBRE identifies Sands, Caesars Entertainment Corp., and MGM Resorts International as potential developers, alongside others such as the Genting Group, Hard Rock International, and Asian resort developers Galaxy Entertainment Group, Melco Resorts, and SJM Holdings.
A Promising Outlook
Macao has weathered numerous economic challenges, including downturns and pandemics, yet Sands has remained resilient. Recently, Macao reported its highest gaming win since 2019, signaling a recovery.
Similarly, the UAE is on an upward trajectory, poised to become a premier destination for gaming and luxury resorts. As more global gaming giants express interest, the UAE could soon rival established gaming hubs like Las Vegas and Macao.
🚗🏃♀️ Hit-and-Run Crash in Summerlin Leads to Felony Charge for Local Woman
Rachel Maria Terranova is facing a felony charge after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal hit-and-run collision on the night of April 27. The incident resulted in the death of Darrel Redhawk Pingleton, 35, who was found dead hours later on the Summerlin Parkway off-ramp of the 215 Beltway, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP).
Allegations and Investigation
According to the arrest report, Terranova initially told investigators that she believed she had struck construction equipment. However, the damage to her Honda Civic suggested otherwise. Following the crash, Terranova filed an insurance claim, and her car was taken to a mechanic shop in Pahrump. The shop owner reported finding blood on the vehicle, prompting further investigation by the police.
Terranova, 27, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on May 30. When questioned by investigators, she claimed that she did not report the crash because she thought no one else was involved.
A search of Terranova’s phone records placed her at the crash scene, and investigators used this information to obtain surveillance footage of her route home. Immediately after the crash, Terranova allegedly searched "news today" on Google and clicked on an article about the hit-and-run the following morning, which provided a possible vehicle description. In the days that followed, she continued to search for information related to Summerlin Parkway crashes.
Legal Proceedings
A warrant for Terranova’s arrest was requested in Las Vegas Justice Court the day before her arrest. She was released from jail on June 3 under medium electronic monitoring and was ordered to stay out of trouble. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 5.
