🌡 Home Protection Tips for Surviving Triple-Digit Temperatures in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is renowned for its scorching summers, characterized by triple-digit temperatures and excessive heat warnings. The extreme heat in Southern Nevada can pose significant dangers not only to people but also to homes. High temperatures can damage pipes, warp and expand floorboards, deteriorate attics, crack roofs, and cause paint to flake and peel, according to property restoration company ServPro. To mitigate these risks, here are some tips to protect your home from heat damage, as recommended by ServPro and Nerdwallet.

Essential Tips for Home Protection

  1. Air Conditioning Maintenance

    • Ensure air conditioning units are functioning properly.

    • Schedule recent inspections and replace filters regularly.

  2. Attic Insulation

    • Insulate the attic to prevent heat from penetrating the home.

  3. Programmable Thermostat

    • Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the home’s temperature throughout the day, optimizing energy use and comfort.

  4. Seal Windows and Doors

    • Caulk windows and doors.

    • Install weather stripping to minimize hot air infiltration.

  5. Effective Window Treatments

    • Upgrade shades to ones that effectively block light.

    • Install heat-blocking film on windows and glass to reduce heat entry.

  6. Double-Pane Windows

    • Consider installing double-pane windows for better insulation.

  7. Reflective Exterior Paint

    • Paint the exterior of the home and the roof with lighter colors to reflect more heat.

  8. Heat-Resistant Paint

    • Inspect both interior and exterior paint; if new paint is needed, choose heat-resistant and UV-protective options.

  9. Summer-Ready Appliances

    • Ensure refrigerator coils are clean and have space for ventilation.

    • Set the water heater to 120 degrees to save energy and prevent overheating.

  10. Water Conservation

    • Fix leaky faucets and install low-flow showerheads to save water and reduce strain on plumbing.

  11. Backup Generator

    • Invest in a backup generator to maintain power during prolonged outages, ensuring continuous operation of essential systems.

By following these tips, homeowners in Southern Nevada can better protect their properties from the damaging effects of extreme heat, ensuring both comfort and structural integrity throughout the scorching summer months.

🏃‍♀️ Iyonna Codd: Centennial's Record-Breaking Sprinter Heads to University of Miami

Iyonna Codd, a senior sprinter from Centennial High School, has made a remarkable impact in track and field despite only taking up the sport two years ago. Her rapid ascent culminated in a standout performance at the Class 5A state meet in Carson City, where she defended her titles in the 100, 200, and 400 meters. Additionally, Codd contributed to Centennial's victory in the 4x400-meter relay and helped secure the team title.

Record-Breaking Achievements

Codd's dominance this season has been nothing short of historic. She set new state records in the 100, 200, and 400 meters, earning her the Nevada Preps All-Southern Nevada Girls Athlete of the Year award. Reflecting on her success, Codd said, "I feel like I set the standard a little higher. I set the tone a little higher. I feel like everybody’s mindset changed a little because we all want to do better. Iron sharpens iron."

A committed athlete, Codd broke a 50-year-old record in the 400 meters at the 5A Southern Region meet with a time of 53.02, surpassing the previous record of 53.13 set in 1974. At the state meet, she shattered her own record in the 100 meters by clocking in at 11.61 seconds and set a new 200-meter record at the Southern Region meet with a time of 23.43 seconds.

Overcoming Challenges

Codd's journey this season was not without its challenges. She was hospitalized with an illness at the end of February, which hampered her training. However, her determination and resilience saw her quickly return to peak form. "I felt confident and strong mentally and spiritually because I had a rocky season this year," Codd said. "I came back and everybody was doubting, but I still walked with confidence."

Her coach, Roy Session, praised her work ethic and drive. "She has this desire to be the best at what she does. That pushes her," Session said. "She never settles. Her goal is that she wants to do better. Not all kids have that drive to put in the extra work."

Future Prospects

Codd is set to continue her athletic and academic journey at the University of Miami, where she aims to grow both as a track athlete and a person. "I felt very comfortable. I felt welcomed [at Miami]," Codd said. "I felt like this feeling of being OK with being uncomfortable because I can grow. I can see growth in my experience there and I can see everything expand."

Codd's transition from basketball to track began her freshman year when she attended a practice for her coach's club track team. Despite an early foot injury, her talent quickly became evident. "She’s one of the most fierce competitors that I’ve ever had," Session noted. "Just her talent and her ambition to be good, it’s just amazing. She’s a really good kid."

Looking Ahead

As Codd prepares to take the next step in her athletic career, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence at Centennial High School. Her record-breaking performances and relentless drive have set a new standard for her peers, and her future in track and field looks incredibly promising.

😈 Findlay Automotive Hit by Cyberattack, Faces Class-Action Lawsuit

Findlay Automotive, a prominent Las Vegas-based automotive group, is grappling with the aftermath of a significant cyberattack that has disrupted operations at its 33 dealerships and led to a class-action lawsuit. The cyberattack has compromised the company's computer systems, impacting sales and service operations, and leaving only a few employees at each dealership to assist customers.

Impact on Customers and Operations

Customers like Duke Zamora, who bought a 2024 Chevrolet Trax from Findlay Chevrolet last year, have experienced the fallout firsthand. Zamora reported multiple unsuccessful attempts to get his vehicle serviced due to the dealership's computer systems being down. He ultimately had to seek service at another dealership. This incident is indicative of the widespread operational challenges Findlay is facing.

Class-Action Lawsuit

The cyberattack has already resulted in a class-action lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Clark County District Court. The lawsuit alleges that Findlay Automotive failed to protect sensitive customer information adequately. The compromised data potentially includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, insurance policy numbers, and financial information such as credit and debit card numbers.

The plaintiffs, Karen Smith and Pholisith Bouphapraseuth, represented by the law firm Stranch, Jennings & Garvey, claim that the company’s negligence in safeguarding this information has left customers vulnerable to identity theft and other malicious activities. They are seeking:

  • Deletion of all sensitive customer information from Findlay's systems.

  • Compensation for any expenses incurred due to the data breach.

  • Implementation of enhanced cybersecurity measures.

The lawsuit also notes that Findlay Automotive has not informed the plaintiffs whether their information was compromised.

Findlay's Response and Ongoing Investigation

Findlay Automotive issued a statement on Monday acknowledging the "cybersecurity issue" affecting its sales and service departments. The company stated that it has initiated an investigation with the help of leading cybersecurity experts and law enforcement. The Metropolitan Police Department referred inquiries to the FBI, which declined to confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.

Industry Concerns and Cybersecurity Measures

Andrew MacKay, executive director of the Nevada Franchised Auto Dealers Association, emphasized the longstanding concern within the auto dealership industry regarding cybersecurity. Dealerships heavily rely on technology for operations, from sales and service appointments to communication with manufacturers and safety notifications. He estimated that Nevada auto dealers spend millions annually on cybersecurity, including employee training and IT infrastructure upgrades.

“Cybersecurity is an issue auto dealers in Nevada and the U.S. have been worried about for years since every dealership relies on technology to operate,” MacKay said. He underscored the critical nature of technology in the automotive industry, stating, "You have to have technology, end of story."

Findlay Automotive's situation highlights the vulnerabilities that even well-established businesses face in the digital age. The outcome of the ongoing investigation and the class-action lawsuit will likely have significant implications for the company and could set a precedent for how such incidents are handled in the future.

🎰 Hawaiian Visitor Wins $1.5 Million Jackpot at California Hotel and Casino

A Hawaiian resident struck it rich early Wednesday morning, hitting a $1.5 million jackpot at a downtown Las Vegas casino. The lucky player wagered $5 on an IGT Wheel of Fortune slot machine at the California Hotel and Casino, owned by Boyd Gaming, just before 4 a.m.

Details of the Win

The jackpot was activated when the player lined up three 7’s across the payline, triggering the bonus wheel. The total payout amounted to $1,569,632.91, according to a news release from Boyd Gaming.

A Memorable Celebration

The winner, who opted to remain anonymous, was in Las Vegas to celebrate his son's 21st birthday. He attributed his good fortune to a red envelope he was carrying in his pocket during the visit. In many cultures, red envelopes are symbols of good luck, prosperity, and happiness, often given during celebrations and special occasions to bring good fortune.

Boyd Gaming’s Reaction

Boyd Gaming, which operates the California Hotel and Casino, expressed excitement over the win. The Wheel of Fortune slot machine, developed by International Game Technology (IGT), has a reputation for creating millionaires and adding to the excitement of the casino experience.

The Tradition of Red Envelopes

The red envelope, or "hongbao" in Chinese culture, is traditionally given during Lunar New Year and other festive occasions as a token of good luck. It is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity to the recipient. The Hawaiian winner’s choice to carry such a symbol adds a layer of cultural significance to his remarkable win.

Las Vegas: A Hub for Big Wins

Las Vegas continues to be a magnet for those hoping to strike it lucky. The city, known for its vibrant casino scene, frequently sees large jackpots and life-changing wins. This latest win at the California Hotel and Casino adds to the city's storied history of making dreams come true.

A Personal Touch

The winner’s celebration of his son’s milestone birthday in Las Vegas was already a special occasion, made even more unforgettable by the substantial jackpot. The event underscores the city’s role as a premier destination for celebratory trips and memorable experiences.

Conclusion

The $1.5 million jackpot win by the Hawaiian resident at the California Hotel and Casino is a testament to the enduring allure of Las Vegas as a place where fortunes can change in an instant. Whether it’s the luck brought by a red envelope or the thrill of playing a renowned slot machine, Las Vegas remains a city where extraordinary moments happen.
