๐ฆ Rising Mosquito Activity in Southern Nevada Spurs Public Health Concerns
UNLV researchers have detected an unusually high number of mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV) early in the season. This discovery raises concerns about potential human infections in Clark County. Researchers are also preparing for future mosquito control measures in collaboration with the Southern Nevada Health District, despite the district currently lacking a mosquito control program. |
Details: |
Early Findings: A significant increase in local mosquitoes testing positive for WNV was found, with 169 positive pools from 25 ZIP codes reported by June 14. UNLV Involvement: Researchers, including Richard Oxborough and Chad Cross, are raising mosquitoes to test insecticides, with results aiding the Southern Nevada Health District in developing control strategies. Historical Context: Clark County has had 44 neuroinvasive WNV cases over the past decade, with the last major outbreak in 2019. Surveillance and Testing: The district monitors mosquito populations from April to October, analyzing trapped mosquitoes for diseases. This yearโs early surge contrasts with past seasons. Public Health Advisory: Due to the increased WNV activity, a public health advisory was issued on June 10 to inform healthcare providers about potential WNV cases. Emerging Threats: The invasive mosquito species Aedes aegypti, capable of transmitting multiple diseases, has rapidly spread across Southern Nevada, increasing mosquito-related complaints. |
Preventive Measures and Future Plans: |
The health district collaborates with local agencies for mosquito habitat management, such as addressing stagnant water sources. UNLVโs insecticide testing will support potential future mosquito control efforts, similar to those in other Southwestern cities. |

The Sundry Food Hall at the UnCommons development in southwest Las Vegas is closing its doors after service on Saturday, a little more than a year after its grand opening in June 2023. Initially featuring 15 diverse eateries from notable chefs, the food hall now lists only five remaining restaurants. Competition from new venues and operational challenges have been cited as factors contributing to its closure. A new concept for the space is being planned. |
Details: |
Opening and Closure: Opened in early June 2023, closing after service on Saturday. Original Vision: Featured 15 purveyors including notable chefs such as Shotaro โShoโ Kamio and Ray Garcia. Current Status: Only five restaurants and the main bar remain operational. Challenges: Increased competition from Durango resort and issues with the digital ordering system. Official Statement: Patric Yumul, CEO of Table One Hospitality, cited the inability to serve the community as initially envisioned. Future Plans: A new concept for the space is in development. |
Notable Restaurants: |
Mizunara: Opened by Shotaro โShoโ Kamio, closed in May. B.S. Taqueria: Opened by Ray Garcia. SoulBelly BBQ: Opened by Bruce Kalman this year. |
Competition and Operational Issues: |
Durango Resort: Opened in December with its own food hall and restaurant collection, increasing local competition. Digital Ordering System: Cited as confusing and frustrating for customers, potentially impacting patronage. |
Future Concept: |
A representative for the developer of UnCommons confirmed that a new concept is being planned for the space following The Sundryโs closure. |
