๐Ÿ”ฅ Las Vegas Set for Record-Breaking Heat in June 2024

After a brief respite from triple-digit temperatures, June 2024 is poised to become the hottest June in Las Vegas weather history. Starting Friday, central Las Vegas is expected to hit a high of 107 degrees, with temperatures climbing even higher in the following days.

Forecasted Heat Wave

The National Weather Service forecasts daily highs around 110 degrees and morning lows in the mid-80s from Saturday through Thursday, nearing the end of June. As of Thursday, the average daily temperature for June was 92.6 degrees, just shy of the record 92.8 degrees set in 2016. With the projected highs and lows, the average daily temperature is expected to surpass the 2016 record by the month's end.

Potential for Moisture

Meteorologist John Adair noted that the only potential interruption to the record heat is a slight chance of moisture from Tropical Storm Alberto, currently crossing central Mexico and the Gulf of California. The influx of moisture could reach Southern Nevada, bringing slight relief from the heat but increasing humidity. The chances of moisture affecting the region are 5 percent on Saturday and up to 10 percent on Sunday, primarily between Searchlight and Lake Havasu.

Detailed Weekend Forecast

  • Saturday: High near 110 degrees with wind gusts up to 20 mph.

  • Sunday: High around 110 degrees following a morning low near 85 degrees.

Climate Study Findings

The intense heatwave in the U.S. southwest is part of a broader trend analyzed by climate scientists from World Weather Attribution. Their recent study indicates that the deadly heat affecting North and Central America is 35 times more likely due to human-induced climate change. The frequency of these extreme heat events has increased significantly in recent years due to fossil fuel usage.

Local Impact and Safety Measures

Clark County has yet to announce the opening of cooling centers, though it's likely they will be activated if the 110-degree temperatures persist. The prolonged dry conditions have also led to increased fire restrictions as grasses and other tinder continue to dry out, elevating the risk of wildfires.

๐Ÿˆ Bishop Gorman Gaels Claim State and National Titles

The Bishop Gorman High School football team celebrated their victory at Allegiant Stadium after defeating Liberty 56-11 in the Class 5A Division I state title game on November 21. This win not only marked their dominance in Nevada but also secured their fourth mythical national championship, as they were ranked No. 1 in the final standings of MaxPreps and USA Today.

Coach Brent Browner praised his team, saying, โ€œYou guys just won a national championship,โ€ emphasizing the significance of their achievements for the state of Nevada. The Gaels' outstanding performance throughout the season earned them the Nevada Preps Team of the Year title.

Starting the season ranked No. 2 by MaxPreps, Bishop Gorman's journey to the top included notable victories against high-ranked teams such as Corner Canyon (Utah), Long Beach Poly (California), and a thrilling 39-35 win over then No. 6 Miami Central (Florida). Their consistent performance culminated in overtaking Mater Dei (California) in the rankings after Mater Dei's defeat to St. John Bosco.

With their 13th state title in 14 years and the national championship confirmed in December, Coach Browner commended his teamโ€™s focus and resilience. Special recognition was given to the senior class, who overcame the challenges of the pandemic to finish their high school careers as national champions.

๐ŸŽฐ MGM Grand and Bellagio to Host Live Casino Broadcasts with Playtech

MGM Resorts International and London-based gaming technology company Playtech have announced a groundbreaking partnership that will bring live casino gaming to a global audience. The new initiative, named "MGM Live," will enable players around the world to participate in live casino games broadcast directly from the floors of MGM Grand and Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Details of the Partnership

The collaboration between MGM and Playtech marks a significant milestone in the gaming industry, combining MGM's renowned hospitality and gaming experience with Playtech's cutting-edge technology. Playtech, a company with over 7,700 employees in 19 countries, is known for its innovation in gaming technology and will facilitate the broadcasts to regulated markets outside of the United States.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. However, both companies have expressed optimism about the potential impact of this partnership on their global reach and market presence.

Gaming Experience and Offerings

Initially, the live casino offerings will include single- and double-zero roulette and baccarat games. These games will be streamed online, allowing players to experience the thrill of real-time casino action from the comfort of their homes. The games will be available on demand, providing flexible access to players around the globe.

As the partnership evolves, the portfolio of games and experiences is expected to expand. Future plans include exclusive access to a variety of Playtech games, branded television game shows, celebrity-hosted trivia shows, and other unique entertainment experiences. This expansion aims to provide a diverse and engaging gaming experience that caters to a wide range of player preferences.

Strategic Vision and Global Reach

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle highlighted the strategic importance of this partnership in a recent press release. "The launch of this new and exciting live casino offering, in partnership with Playtech and directly from Bellagio and MGM Grand in Las Vegas, furthers our strategic vision to be the worldโ€™s premier gaming entertainment company," Hornbuckle stated. He emphasized that the collaboration would enhance MGM's commitment to providing unparalleled experiences and expand its global reach.

Hornbuckle added, "We believe the content, celebrity talent, and sophisticated gaming experience that we will offer โ€” all from the trusted and highly reputable brands of MGM Resorts โ€” will be unmatched in the industry."

Commitment to Responsible Gaming

In addition to enhancing the gaming experience, Playtech CEO Mor Weizer stressed the importance of incorporating responsible gaming and player protection messages into the broadcasts. This initiative underscores both companies' dedication to promoting safe and responsible gaming practices.

Future Prospects

The partnership between MGM Resorts and Playtech is poised to set a new standard in the live casino gaming industry. By leveraging the strengths of both companies, MGM Live is expected to attract a broad international audience and provide an immersive, high-quality gaming experience.

As the initiative develops, players can look forward to a dynamic and evolving array of games and entertainment options, solidifying MGM Resorts and Playtech's positions as leaders in the global gaming market.

๐Ÿก Mesquite, Nevada: Fastest-Growing City in the State

Mesquite, Nevada, is experiencing unprecedented growth and is projected to more than double its population within the next two decades. Sungman Kim, director of development services for Mesquite, reports that the city could exceed 45,000 residents by 2041, largely driven by a specific demographic: retirees. Approximately 45 percent of Mesquiteโ€™s population is 65 or older, primarily comprised of "snowbirds"โ€”retired Americans or Canadians who spend their winters in the city.

Current Housing and Market Trends

In 2023, Mesquite had 2,016 vacant houses, with only 16 percent available for sale. The remaining homes are likely second residences for snowbirds, according to Kim. The current real estate market features around 102 homes, 34 condos, and 27 townhomes for sale, with prices ranging from $275,000 to $1.6 million.

Population Growth Statistics

From 2020 to 2023, Mesquite's population surged by 10.5 percent, growing from 20,616 to 22,786 residents, making it the fastest-growing city in Nevada during this period. This growth outpaced North Las Vegas (9.0 percent) and Fernley (7.4 percent), as per U.S. Census Bureau data.

Historical and Recent Developments

Karen Fielding, a city councilor and real estate agent, has witnessed Mesquite's transformation since moving to the town nearly 30 years ago. "When I moved here, there were 3,270 people, and now we're over 22,000," she said. The city's recent growth is evident from the increase in single-family residential permits, with 34 permits pulled in May 2024, compared to 29 the previous year.

Seasonal Population Fluctuations

Fielding noted that Mesquiteโ€™s population fluctuates by 3,000 to 4,000 residents annually due to the seasonal migration of snowbirds. These residents typically leave during the summer months to avoid the heat, returning during the cooler winter season.

Mesquite's Attractions and Appeal

Mesquite's location, straddling the Nevada and Arizona state lines and situated between Las Vegas and St. George, Utah, makes it an attractive destination for retirees seeking recreational and entertainment options without the hassle of big-city living. The city boasts several golf courses, three casinos, and off-road vehicle trails, drawing tourists and residents alike.

Fielding emphasized the importance of maintaining a steady growth rate to ensure the city can accommodate new residents. "We don't want to grow too fast that we can't accommodate the new people who come to town and seek this place out," she said, expressing confidence that Mesquite will continue to thrive while retaining its charm.
