👨👨👧👦 Las Vegas Attracts More Affluent Visitors and New High-Wage Residents
Tourists are flocking to Las Vegas at higher rates than before the pandemic, with more affluent visitors filling hotel rooms, according to a new study by travel.ai. The “Las Vegas: A Tourism and Migration Deep Dive” report reveals not only a surge in tourism but also an influx of high-wage earners moving to Southern Nevada, attracted by the cost of living and tax benefits.
The study echoes findings from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s 2023 Visitor Profile Study, indicating that visitors are spending more on lodging, food, transportation, shopping, and gambling, although slightly less on entertainment due to high ticket prices.
Key Findings from the Study
Tourism Boom: Overnight stays in Las Vegas have increased both year-over-year and compared to pre-COVID levels.
Affluent Visitors: The iconic Las Vegas Strip is seeing a steady rise in affluent visitors, solidifying its status as an upscale vacation destination.
New Residents: Many new and affluent residents are making the Las Vegas area their permanent home.
The report highlights that monthly visitation levels have consistently exceeded pre-pandemic numbers since mid-2023, except for July. This resurgence is attributed to robust demand for experiences and new entertainment venues like the Sphere. Additionally, events like Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium in February 2024 significantly boosted visitor numbers.
Rising Median Incomes
The median income of visitors has climbed each year since 2022, reaching $93,000 annually, higher than pre-COVID levels. Similarly, higher income levels are observed among those migrating to Southern Nevada, indicating the area's growing appeal to affluent individuals.
Visitor Satisfaction
Kevin Bagger, Vice President of the LVCVA’s Research Center, emphasizes the importance of visitor satisfaction, noting that high satisfaction levels (around 95%) encourage repeat visits. However, visitors often cite high costs, resort fees, the homeless population, and transportation challenges as areas needing improvement.

💥 Tropicana Hotel-Casino Demolition Progresses Toward October Implosion
Two and a half months ago, the Tropicana was alive with nostalgic visitors seeking one last memory at the iconic hotel-casino. Today, the atmosphere has shifted dramatically as demolition crews work tirelessly to prepare the site for a possible implosion in October, marking the end of an era and the beginning of new developments.
Demolition and Future Plans
Since its closure on April 2, significant progress has been made in dismantling the Tropicana. Demolition teams have already cleared out 13 floors of the hotel, removing walls and leaving only the skeletal structure of the building. The porte cochere has been torn down, and workers continue to dismantle the remaining hotel tower. Bally’s Corp., the Rhode Island-based operator of the Tropicana, aims to implode the building in October, making way for a Major League Baseball stadium.
The Oakland Athletics plan to construct a $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat ballpark on part of the 36-acre site, which will offer views of the Las Vegas Strip. The remaining land is intended for development into a new casino resort, in partnership with landowner Gaming & Leisure Properties Inc.
Historical Context of Implosions
Las Vegas has a storied history of hotel implosions, often transforming these demolitions into grand public spectacles. When the New Frontier was imploded in 2007, the event featured a fireworks show and a countdown. Similarly, the Dunes' north tower was imploded with Hollywood flair during the opening of Treasure Island, with Steve Wynn orchestrating the event from a pirate ship.
Permitting and Preparations
While it remains unclear whether Bally’s has planned any theatrics for the Tropicana’s implosion, the company continues to prepare for the event. Clark County approved a demolition permit on April 20, giving Bally’s until October 20 to complete the $15 million demolition. The work thus far has been carried out by GGG Demolition Inc., based in Orange County, California.
To proceed with the implosion, several additional permits and steps are required. Contractors must obtain a blasting permit from the Clark County Fire Department, submit a traffic control plan if road closures are necessary, and address any asbestos removal under county supervision. Only after these conditions are met will an implosion-specific permit be issued by the county.
Safety and Logistics
The property owners must also provide a detailed project timeline and plans for safety measures, including fencing, crowd control, and adherence to safety regulations. These plans must cover the period from 24 hours before the implosion to the post-implosion reopening of roads and securing of the site.
Community Engagement and Future Events
As part of the preparatory activities, the Tropicana demolition has drawn considerable local interest. The site’s transformation from a beloved historical landmark to a venue for future developments highlights the dynamic nature of Las Vegas’s landscape. The upcoming implosion, if executed as planned, will mark a significant moment in the city’s ongoing evolution.
For now, the buzzing at the Tropicana comes from machinery and construction workers, symbolizing both the end of an era and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for this iconic Las Vegas location.
The demolition of the Tropicana Hotel-Casino is well underway, with significant progress made since its closure in April. As Bally’s Corp. prepares for a potential October implosion, the site is being readied for the construction of a new Major League Baseball stadium and future casino resort. With historical precedents of spectacular implosions in Las Vegas, the upcoming event is poised to be a notable moment in the city's continuous transformation.
