๐ฆ Las Vegas Valley Sees Scattered Showers, More Heat Expected
A Tuesday afternoon thunderstorm brought nearly a third of an inch of rain near Henderson Executive Airport. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Planz, the strongest winds reached about 44 mph near Anthem, resulting from monsoonal moisture combined with heat.
Rainfall Details
Location: Henderson Executive Airport
Rainfall: 0.31 inches near Anthem and Bicentennial parkways, 0.16 inches at the south end of Anthem
Wind Speed: Up to 44 mph near Anthem
The scattered showers moved northeast over Summerlin shortly before 4 p.m., bringing temporary relief to the area.
Record Heat Expected to End June
The Las Vegas Valley is experiencing record-breaking heat as June comes to a close. The average daily high temperature for June has been 93.2 degrees, with the mean high so far being about 105 degrees. Meteorologist Matt Woods noted that the rest of June's forecast predicts temperatures above 105 degrees, likely setting a record for the hottest June.
Monday Low: 91 degrees, above the record of 87 degrees set in 2003 and tied in 2017
Monday High: 112 degrees, just shy of the 113-degree record set in 1961 and tied in 2017
Tuesday Forecast: High of 109 degrees with a 10 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms after 2 p.m.
Wednesday Forecast: High of 111 degrees with south-southwest winds of 8-13 mph, possibly escalating up to 22 mph
Possible Relief Ahead
A system from the Pacific Northwest is expected to bring slight relief from Thursday into the weekend, with highs predicted to range from 106 to 108 degrees. This system should help clear out moisture and bring in drier, cooler air.
Fire Warnings and Safety Measures
The fire danger in the Spring Mountains has been elevated to extreme due to the lack of moisture causing grass and brush to become brittle. With the Fourth of July approaching, the U.S. Forest Service warns against using fireworks on federal land. Fires are permitted in authorized fire pits, but visitors are advised to keep water and shovels on hand for safety.
Fire Safety: No fireworks allowed on federal land; use authorized fire pits with water and shovels available
Summary
The Las Vegas Valley experienced a brief but impactful thunderstorm on Tuesday, bringing much-needed rain to Henderson. As the area continues to endure record-breaking heat, slight relief is anticipated with cooler temperatures later in the week. However, fire danger remains high, and residents are urged to exercise caution, especially with the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations.
โฝ Las Vegas Welcomes Top Soccer Teams for Copa America
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will add another significant event to its resume this week as it hosts two group stage matches of the Copa America tournament. The venue will feature Ecuador facing Jamaica at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by Brazil taking on Paraguay at 6 p.m. on Friday. Additionally, a quarterfinal match is scheduled for July 6.
A Hub for Soccer
โLas Vegas is great for soccer,โ said TelevisaUnivision host Lindsay Casinelli, who is part of the networkโs studio team for the tournament. She praised the stadium and the city, highlighting its growing reputation as a major destination for sports and entertainment events. โIt has become a great city for any kind of tournament, and thatโs part of why Brazil wants to play there, for sure. Itโs so fun.โ
Global Spotlight on Las Vegas
The tournament, last held in 2021, serves as the championship of South Americaโs CONMEBOL federation and is the oldest continental tournament in the world. This year marks the 10th time the United States has hosted the tournament, showcasing Las Vegas to audiences across the Americas.
These matches are set to be the biggest soccer events ever held in Las Vegas, following a smaller-scale introduction with the Gold Cup final in 2021. โThe whole continents of North, Central, and South America are coming together with the best of the best,โ Casinelli noted, emphasizing the high caliber of players and teams participating.
Star Players and Teams
Brazil, featuring 23-year-old phenom Vinicius Junior, will be a major attraction. Casinelli described Vinicius as โexplosive, fast and smart,โ adding that he embodies the Brazilian style of play, known as jogo bonito or โthe beautiful game.โ She believes that if he performs well in Copa America, he could be named the Ballon d'Or as the best player in the world.
The U.S. national team might also play a quarterfinal match at Allegiant Stadium if they win Group C over Uruguay. Casinelli highlighted the U.S. teamโs potential and the talent of players like Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, and Weston McKennie, which she believes can elevate the sport in the country.
Soccerโs Growth in the U.S.
Casinelli reflected on the growth of soccer in the U.S., noting the increased participation in youth soccer and the excitement building towards the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host. โRight now, weโre at a totally different moment,โ she said, expressing optimism about the sport's future in the country.
Summary
Allegiant Stadium is set to host significant Copa America matches this week, featuring top teams and players. The event highlights Las Vegasโs growing stature as a premier destination for major sports events, showcasing the city to a global audience and contributing to the increasing popularity of soccer in the United States.
๐ก California Buyers Drive Nevada Housing Prices Higher
Nevadaโs housing market is grappling with the pressures of soaring real estate prices and an influx of buyers from neighboring California. These dynamics have compounded the challenges for local residents, squeezing renters and pushing homeownership out of reach for many.
California Buyers Drive Up Prices
Californiaโs high real estate prices have driven many residents to seek more affordable housing options in Nevada. According to Redfin, the median sale price for a home in Los Angeles is $1.05 million, while the average wage in California is $73,220. In contrast, the median sale price for a home in Nevada's valley is $440,000, with an average wage of $55,490. This disparity makes Nevada an attractive market for Californians, who often have greater purchasing power.
Historical Context and Recent Trends
John Page, a local housing analyst, believes the current crisis could have been mitigated with earlier intervention. โIn my estimation we needed to start looking at this issue as far back as 2011 or 2012 after the recession, because what we saw were individuals and investors starting to come to Nevada to buy up homes,โ Page said.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the housing shortage as remote workers flocked to Nevada, further straining the supply of affordable homes and rentals. This influx has led to a severe pinch in all aspects of residential real estate.
Government Efforts and Challenges
Clark County has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in addressing the housing crisis through initiatives like the Welcome Home Program and Community Housing Fund. However, there are concerns about the effectiveness of these efforts. โSo yes, government is part of the problem, but is government part of the solution? Yes,โ said Aichroth, a local government official. He emphasized the need for regulation in the private market to prevent unchecked growth and instability similar to that seen during the Great Recession.
The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act
The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act of 1998 has come under scrutiny for its role in the current housing crisis. Critics argue that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is not auctioning available land quickly enough, hindering development opportunities.
Theresa Coleman, district manager for the Southern Nevada District Office, explained that land parcels are made available through a joint selection process with local governments. The process requires local jurisdictions to approve land sales before BLM can auction them. Currently, approximately 27,000 acres remain available for development.
Perspectives on Land Development
Bob Cleveland, CEO of Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, supports unlocking land for development but warns that it is not a simple fix. โThere is a lot of land that has already been released. The housing crisis comes because there is no affordable housing,โ Cleveland said. He pointed out that the influx of California buyers continues to drive up prices, making it difficult for developers to focus on affordable housing.
Long-term Solutions
Cleveland suggests that merely releasing more land to developers wonโt solve the crisis if the new developments are not affordable. He emphasizes the need for targeted efforts to build affordable housing to truly address the needs of local residents.
Summary
Nevada's housing market is under intense pressure from an influx of buyers from California, driving up prices and making housing less affordable for locals. While government initiatives have attempted to address the crisis, challenges remain in ensuring that new developments meet the demand for affordable housing. The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act and other regulatory measures play crucial roles, but more targeted solutions are necessary to create a sustainable housing market.
โ International Travel Surge Boosts Traffic at Harry Reid Airport
More than 5.2 million passengers traveled through Harry Reid International Airport in May, marking a new milestone for the year and reflecting an increase from the same period last year. This rise in passenger volume underscores the airport's growing significance as a hub for both domestic and international travel.
Key Factors Behind the Increase
The uptick in passenger traffic can largely be attributed to a significant rise in international travel. According to monthly data released by the airport and the Clark County Department of Aviation, international travel increased by approximately 22 percent compared to May 2023. This surge contributed to a 5.2 percent year-over-year increase in total passenger volumes for May.
Passenger Statistics
In May, out of the 5.2 million passengers, about 351,400 were traveling to and from international destinations. Domestic travel also saw a slight increase of 4.3 percent, bringing the number of domestic travelers to nearly 4.8 million.
For the first five months of 2024, passenger traffic at Reid International Airport has risen by 2.4 percent, totaling 23.8 million passengers. This steady growth highlights the airport's expanding role in handling a larger volume of travelers.
Airline Performance
Discount carriers continue to dominate the service at Harry Reid International Airport. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines led the way, transporting 1.9 million passengers to and from Las Vegas in May, up 9.3 percent from the previous year. Despite its overall dominance, Spirit Airlines experienced a 6.8 percent decrease in passengers, with roughly 704,000 travelers.
Meanwhile, legacy carriers Delta Air Lines and American Airlines reported significant increases in passenger travel. Delta saw a 13.4 percent increase, while American Airlines experienced a 12.3 percent rise in passenger numbers, reflecting robust demand for their services.
Declines in Charter and Helicopter Travel
Not all categories saw growth. The west side charter terminals and helicopter services continued to show declines in passenger counts. In May, passenger counts for these services were down nearly 2 percent, and the year-to-date figures show a 6.6 percent decline. This trend indicates a shift in travel preferences or market dynamics affecting these specific services.
Summary
Harry Reid International Airport's record-breaking passenger traffic in May highlights its growing importance as a travel hub, driven by significant increases in international travel. While discount carriers like Southwest Airlines lead in passenger volumes, traditional airlines such as Delta and American Airlines also saw substantial growth. However, the decline in charter and helicopter travel suggests changing dynamics in specific travel sectors. Overall, the airport's performance reflects a positive trend in passenger traffic, positioning it for continued growth in 2024.
๐ถ Downtown Las Vegas to Host New Block Party Event with Top Artists

This event promises to be a dance-floor extravaganza, featuring a stellar lineup of artists including Justice, Peggy Gou, LCD Soundsystem, Jungle, and nearly a dozen more.
Event Lineup and Schedule
The two-day block party will feature performances from:
Justice
Peggy Gou
LCD Soundsystem
Jungle
Jamie XX
James Blake
Thundercat
Toro y Moi
Badbadnotgood
Neil Frances
LP Giobbi
Empress Of
John Talabot
Fifi
The event will run from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. each day, with no overlapping set times, ensuring a continuous dance party atmosphere. The venue will be located on the Plazaโs property in downtown Las Vegas.
Evolution of Life is Beautiful
The Block Party is an offshoot of the renowned Life is Beautiful music and arts festival, which has been a fixture in downtown Las Vegas since its debut in 2013. Although the traditional festival is on hold this year, it could return in the future. Several acts at the Block Party have previously performed at Life is Beautiful, including Justice (2018), Badbadnotgood (2015), and Jungle (2022).
New Ownership and Concept
This event marks the first Life is Beautiful-affiliated event under the full ownership of Rolling Stone and Penske Media, who took over the brand in February 2022. Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner explained that the decision to hold a block party this year instead of the traditional festival was influenced by logistical challenges and a desire to maintain the event's downtown roots.
Wenner highlighted the impact of Life is Beautiful on the downtown community, both economically and culturally, and expressed excitement about the new format. โThe more that we talked about it, the more that we saw how it could be unique,โ he said. The goal is to potentially host similar events throughout the year in addition to the main festival.
Unique Experience and Affordable Tickets
The Block Party aims to create a cohesive and immersive experience with a curated lineup of electronic music acts that complement each other. Wenner emphasized the appeal of attending a nighttime event with a seamless flow of performances. Two-day general admission passes are priced at $199 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday at lifeisbeautiful.com.
A key aspect of the Block Party is that there will be no conflicting performances, allowing attendees to enjoy all acts without having to choose between stages. โWe wanted to design something that was really one contained experience, where you could just get lost and have a shared experience with the people that youโre there with,โ Wenner said.
Community Focus and Future Plans
Beyond music, the Block Party will incorporate elements of art and community engagement, staying true to the Life is Beautiful ethos. In collaboration with the nonprofit organization Headcount, the event will facilitate voter registration in light of the upcoming presidential election year.
While the full details of the Block Party are still being finalized, Wenner assured that it would be community-oriented and celebratory. Looking ahead, he mentioned that Life is Beautiful is likely to return next year, with the Block Party location serving as its new anchor.
Conclusion
The Big Beautiful Block Party is poised to become a new highlight in Las Vegasโs vibrant event scene, offering an exciting lineup and a unique, uninterrupted experience for music lovers. As the event draws near, anticipation is building for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of music, art, and community.
