💧 Southern Nevada's Water from Colorado River Deemed Safe Despite Hardness
By federal standards, the water sourced from the Colorado River and consumed in Southern Nevada is safe, as confirmed by annual water quality data released by local water managers. This assurance is largely due to a comprehensive network of filtering and treatment centers, including the Las Vegas Wash, which transports treated wastewater to Lake Mead.
Water Hardness Explained: One particular measure that often arises in discussions about water quality is "hardness," which refers to the total amount of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, picked up as water flows down the Colorado River from the Rocky Mountains. These minerals, while not harmful to public health, are what make the water "hard."
Unique Water Source: Southern Nevada is distinctive in that 90 percent of its water comes from the Colorado River, unlike other major urban areas in the Southwest that can rely more on less mineral-dense groundwater. Bronson Mack, a spokesman for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), explains that the erosion caused by the Colorado River is responsible for the high mineral content in the water.
“Most of us are well aware that the Colorado River has created some significant erosion, so significant that we’ve named the canyon grand, just because of the amount of erosion,” Mack said. “The erosion that we see within the Colorado River is what causes calcium and magnesium to become entrained in the water.”
Hardness Levels: According to the Las Vegas Valley Water District’s 2024 water quality report, the average hardness level of the water is 304 parts per million (ppm). This level, which is considered "very hard" by the U.S. Geological Survey, is derived from readings at the two main water treatment plants serving the valley.
Health Implications: Mack emphasized that drinking hard water does not impact health. The presence of calcium and magnesium is more a matter of preference, affecting things like taste and the potential for mineral deposits. Home water softeners can address hardness but may increase the sodium content of drinking water, which some people might find undesirable.
Effects of Hard Water: Hard water can leave chalky residue around sinks or drains and can dry out the skin. It also makes it more challenging to create a lather with soap. However, most modern plumbing is designed to handle the effects of hard water.
Home Water Treatment Options: While the SNWA does not specifically encourage the installation of home water softeners or filtration systems, these can improve the taste, odor, and hardness of tap water. Softened water can reduce water spots, improve the feel of water on skin, clean clothes better, and extend the life of appliances. However, it can also harm plants and septic systems due to its high salt content.
“The thing about hard water, though, is that it’s an aesthetic issue. It’s not a contaminant,” Mack said. “It’s not anything that changes the safety of the water.”
🏀 Aces Secure Third Straight Win Over Sky with 95-83 Victory
In a heartfelt moment after the final buzzer, Aces coach Becky Hammon and Chicago Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon shared a long embrace. On the court, A’ja Wilson and rookie Angel Reese mirrored their coaches, exchanging smiles and words.
Game Summary:
Aces 95, Sky 83: The Aces secured their third consecutive win at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
Top Performers: A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 31 points, extending her record of consecutive 20-point games to 20. Kelsey Plum added 22 points, and Jackie Young contributed 21.
Sky Highlights: Marina Mabrey led the Sky with 21 points. Angel Reese recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds, achieving her ninth straight double-double.
Key Takeaways:
Wilson's Leadership: Wilson, the league's leading scorer and rebounder, has been pivotal in the Aces' locker room. Her emotional post-game comments on June 15 have inspired the team, contributing to their recent winning streak.
Resilience Under Pressure: Despite a challenging start to the third quarter, the Aces regained control by intensifying their defense and refining their offense. Coach Hammon emphasized the team's ability to bounce back from setbacks.
Iowa Connections: The game highlighted the influence of Iowa in the WNBA. Rookie Kate Martin, a former Hawkeye, provided crucial momentum off the bench, and Kiah Stokes, with her Iowa roots, delivered a strong defensive performance with six blocks.
