๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ UNLV Report from 1996 Accurately Predicted Clark County's 2024 Population

Back in 1996, UNLVโ€™s Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER) predicted that Clark County would have a population of 2.26 million by 2024. The latest population forecast for 2024 places the countyโ€™s population at 2.41 million, showing the projection was impressively close, missing the mark by only about 147,000 residents.

Population Growth:

  • 2024 Population: 2.41 million

  • 1996 Projection for 2024: 2.26 million

  • Difference: Approximately 147,000 residents

  • Future Projections: Clark County is expected to hit 2.5 million residents by 2027, a milestone the 1996 report had forecasted for 2034. The county is projected to reach 3 million residents by 2042.

Historical Context: Andrew Woods, director of CBER and co-author of the current report, noted the long history of population forecasting in the valley. Woods credited Dr. Keith Schwer, a renowned economic forecaster and former director of CBER, for unifying local government entities around a single forecast in the late 1990s.

Economic Diversification: The 1996 report not only projected population growth but also anticipated economic diversification in the valley. It correctly predicted continued growth in tourism and gaming, while also foreseeing the attraction of other industries to the area.

Economic and Social Predictions: The 1996 report had several accurate predictions about the economic and social trajectory of Las Vegas:

  • Economic Growth: The report anticipated continued strong economic growth, driven by the national and international demand for gaming and tourism.

  • Real Estate and Cost of Living: It foresaw soaring real estate prices and an increased cost of living, noting that growth would lead to higher housing costs and demand for public services.

  • Transportation and Infrastructure: The report predicted challenges in transportation infrastructure, with increased traffic congestion, noise, and pollution reducing the quality of life.

Local Industry and Employment: The report also anticipated job growth driven by the demand in specific industries such as gaming and construction, while also warning that lower quality of life due to negative externalities could impact the competitiveness of local industries.

Reflection: The 1996 report by CBER was remarkably prophetic, capturing the essence of future challenges and growth in Clark County. The accuracy of these long-term projections underscores the importance and reliability of economic forecasting in planning for regional development.

๐ŸฅŠ UFC 303: Pereira Knocks Out Prochรกzka, Ige Loses to Lopes in Last-Minute Showdown

Dan Ige's hopes for a triumphant storybook ending were dashed in the co-main event of UFC 303 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Despite a wild and last-minute decision to accept the fight, Ige lost a unanimous decision to Diego Lopes, with all three judges scoring the bout 29-28 in favor of Lopes.

Last-Minute Fight Acceptance: Ige took the fight on incredibly short notice, stepping in just hours before the match when Brian Ortega fell ill and couldn't compete against Lopes.

โ€œEight weeks, six weeks, four weeks, four hours? It doesnโ€™t matter. This is what I live for. This is my dream. I get to wake up every day and do what I love to do,โ€ Ige said. โ€œI got the call and said, โ€˜This is an opportunity to become a legend. This is a story I can tell my grandkids.โ€™โ€

Main Event Recap: In the main event, Alex Pereira (11-2) retained his light heavyweight title with a stunning knockout of former champ Jiri Prochรกzka (30-5-1). Pereira dropped Prochรกzka with a left hook at the end of the first round and followed up with a head kick and punches in the second round to secure the victory.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know how I was going to win, but I knew I was going to leave the octagon happy,โ€ Pereira said.

Card Adjustments: The fight card was restructured after Conor McGregor withdrew from his bout against Michael Chandler due to an injury. Ige, a Las Vegas resident, offered to step in on short notice and was quickly cleared by the Nevada Athletic Commission since he was already training for a fight scheduled for July 20.

โ€œThe doctors checked out Ortega, and he had a (103-degree) fever and he had to pull out of the fight,โ€ UFC president Dana White said. โ€œIge was ready to go, so here we are. This is the (stuff) legends are made of, right here.โ€

Fight Highlights:

  • Ige vs. Lopes: Ige (18-8) put up a valiant effort but Lopes (25-6) proved too formidable, especially on the ground. The fight, contested at 165 pounds due to Lopes already rehydrating, showcased Igeโ€™s determination and readiness.

  • Ian Machado Garry: Rising welterweight contender improved to 15-0 with a unanimous decision over Michael โ€œVenomโ€ Page, utilizing grappling to neutralize Pageโ€™s striking.

  • Macy Chiasson: Scored a second-round TKO over Mayra Bueno Silva after the fight was stopped due to a severe cut.

  • Roman Dolidze: Snapped a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Anthony Smith.

Preliminary Card Results:

  • Payton Talbott: Knocked out Yanis Ghemmouri in just 19 seconds.

  • Joe Pyfer: Finished Marc-Andre Barriault with punches in 85 seconds.

  • Andre Fili: Earned a split decision over Cub Swanson.

  • Martin Buday: Won a unanimous decision against Andrei Arlovski.

  • Gillian Robertson: Secured a unanimous decision over Michelle Waterson-Gomez, who announced her retirement post-fight.

  • Rei Tsuruya and Vinicius Oliveira: Both picked up unanimous-decision victories.

  • Jean Silva: Achieved a second-round knockout of Charles Jourdain.

Retirement Announcement: Michelle Waterson-Gomez, a veteran in the womenโ€™s strawweight division, tearfully announced her retirement in the cage at age 38 following her loss to Gillian Robertson.
