๐Ÿ’ Marchessault Joins Predators: Golden Knights Seek New Scoring Leaders

Replacing Jonathan Marchessault will be a difficult task for the Golden Knights in more ways than one. The 42-goal scorerโ€™s impact on the ice is immense, but he was also a vocal leader in the locker room, known for his humor and team-first attitude.

Marchessaultโ€™s Departure

Marchessault, who signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Nashville Predators on Monday, expressed a desire to finish his career with the Knights. However, general manager Kelly McCrimmon was not willing to extend a long-term deal to the 33-year-old player. Marchessault's parting comment on TSN, โ€œI donโ€™t think they tried their best to keep me,โ€ was countered by McCrimmon, who insisted, โ€œthat couldnโ€™t be further from the truth.โ€

Contract Offer Dispute

On Wednesday, Marchessault clarified his stance on Nashville radio station 102.5 The Game, explaining that the Knightsโ€™ offer included deferred money, which he found unacceptable. โ€œThe end result was probably the same amount (of money), but it was along the years. Thatโ€™s what I didnโ€™t like,โ€ he said. โ€œI donโ€™t think I deserved that deal at the time. I was not the kind of guy that wanted to explode the bank. I wanted to get a good deal for a team that wants to win.โ€

Finding a Replacement

The Knights now face the challenge of replacing their all-time leader in goals, assists, points, and games played. Marchessaultโ€™s durability was a significant asset, missing only 23 games in his seven seasons with the team, including none last year. There are few players of his caliber left in the free-agent market.

On Tuesday, the Knights signed right wing Victor Olofsson to a one-year, $1.075 million deal. The 28-year-old, who has three 20-goal seasons, scored just seven goals in 51 games last year. McCrimmon acknowledges that other forwards will need to step up in Marchessault's absence.

Potential Candidates to Step Up

Pavel Dorofeyev, a 23-year-old forward, scored 13 goals and 11 assists in 47 games last season. His versatility makes him a strong candidate for increased responsibility, potentially alongside center Jack Eichel in training camp.

Brendan Brisson, the Knightsโ€™ 2020 first-round pick, debuted last season with two goals and six assists in 15 games. He is expected to push for a full-time role with a strong camp performance.

New Acquisitions

The Knights acquired Alexander Holtz and goaltender Akira Schmid from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for left wing Paul Cotter and a third-round pick. Holtz, the seventh overall pick in 2020, scored 16 goals in 82 games last season. At 22, he is motivated to prove himself, particularly as he approaches restricted free agency next offseason.

Schmid, who signed a two-year contract with an average annual value of $875,000, will start as the organizationโ€™s No. 3 goaltender. The Knights also signed goaltender Ilya Samsonov to a one-year, $1.8 million contract to serve as Adin Hill's backup.

Moving Forward

The Golden Knights are entering a new era without Marchessault, whose presence both on and off the ice will be sorely missed. The team remains optimistic that their younger players and new acquisitions can step up and fill the void left by one of their most beloved and productive players.

๐ŸŒ‰ Pedestrian Bridges at Tropicana Avenue to Close for Demolition and Stadium Construction

As the demolition of the Tropicana resort progresses, access to pedestrian bridges at the site will soon be temporarily closed to the public. This closure is part of the preparations for the construction of the new Oakland Athletics stadium on the property.

Impact on Pedestrian Access

The east and south pedestrian bridges at Tropicana Avenue, which connect the Tropicana property to the Excalibur and MGM Grand, will be closed. This is necessary to ensure pedestrian safety during the demolition and construction activities, according to Clark County spokeswoman Stacey Welling. The sidewalks along Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana adjacent to the construction site will also be closed.

โ€œOur Public Works Department approved a request for the closures by the project contractor to protect pedestrian safety while construction activity is under way,โ€ Welling said in an email to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. She added that the bridges will reopen once construction activities permit.

Timeline and Permits

While the exact timeline for the closure of the bridge access points and sidewalks is not yet available, two fence permits to barricade the bridges have been filed and are pending with the countyโ€™s building department. Once approved, these permits are valid for 180 days, each with a contract value of $25,000.

Demolition and Construction Plans

GGG Demolition Inc., contracted by Ballyโ€™s Corp., is currently gutting the Tropicana hotel towers. The towers are planned to be demolished via implosion in October, after which the site will be cleared to begin construction on the new ballpark in April. The Oakland Athletics plan to build a $1.5 billion, 33,000-seat stadium on 9 acres of the 35-acre Tropicana site. Ballyโ€™s Corp. has plans to develop a new resort on the remaining acreage.

Stadium Development Progress

The Athletics need to secure three of the four required documents from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority to access the $380 million allocated by Senate Bill 1. The community benefits agreement has been approved, while the lease and non-relocation agreements are awaiting approval. The development agreement, detailing the funding and construction timeline for the ballpark, is expected to be introduced at the next stadium authority meeting on July 18.

Conclusion

The demolition of the Tropicana and subsequent construction of the Oakland Athletics stadium marks a significant transformation for the site. While the temporary closure of pedestrian bridges and sidewalks will cause some inconvenience, these measures are necessary to ensure public safety during the extensive construction activities.

๐Ÿถ How to Keep Your Pets Safe and Calm During Fourth of July Fireworks

Fourth of July fireworks can be extremely stressful for pets. With some preparation, pet owners can help their furry friends stay calm and safe during the celebrations.

Understand Past Behavior

Amy Joshua, a dog coordinator with the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society, advises pet owners to review their pets' past holiday behavior. "Pet owners should prepare their pet by reviewing past holiday behavior," she says, pointing to New Yearโ€™s Eve firework celebrations as an example.

Create a Comfortable Environment

Joshua suggests creating a cozy, secure space for pets, especially those that are new or get anxious. "A soft, cozy space should be prepared for them. Dog beds, favorite toys, and blankets create a safe and familiar haven," she recommends.

Stay Home with Your Pet

Johnna Holland, a dog trainer with Smarty Paws Canine Training, emphasizes the importance of staying home with your pet. "My best piece of advice is to ride out the storm... Your dogโ€™s safety should mean everything to you. If you have to sacrifice one night out with friends to stay home, that ensures that your dog doesnโ€™t get out," she says.

Microchip Your Pet

Joshua highlights that more pets become lost on the Fourth of July than any other holiday. She urges pet owners to get their pets microchipped and ensure the contact information is up-to-date. "This is to ensure their pet gets returned to them as soon as possible if it comes to a rescue or shelter," she explains.

Plan Ahead

Holland suggests pet owners should start preparing their pets at least six months in advance by setting goals for socialization and desensitization to loud sounds. Gradually exposing dogs to louder environments can help. "Start with a trip to a coffee shop to get dogs used to loud human movements and progress to louder places," she advises. Even simple actions like clanging pots and pans together in the kitchen can help.

Consider Medication

For pets that need extra help, medication is an option. However, Holland notes that medications often take several weeks to be effective. "A lot of medications, whether it be CBD or a prescribed sedative from your veterinarian, take a couple of weeks to really take effect and build a chemical baseline within the body," she explains.

Key Takeaways

Both Holland and Joshua emphasize that preparation is crucial to ensure pets have a safe and anxiety-free Fourth of July. By understanding past behavior, creating a comfortable environment, staying home with your pet, microchipping, planning ahead, and considering medication, pet owners can help their pets cope with the stress of fireworks.
