🔥 Las Vegas Residents Warned as Pavement Burns Surge During Historic Heatwave

On June 21, Stephen Cantwell was enjoying a day at the Wynn sportsbook, celebrating his horse betting wins with tequila shots. But what started as a day of fun quickly turned into a painful ordeal when Cantwell, after about six shots, decided to get sushi at Fashion Show Mall, located just across the street from the Wynn. The next thing he remembers is waking up in the hospital with burns covering nearly 7 percent of his body.

"I definitely passed out and fell on the pavement," said Cantwell, 59, who was found unconscious by bystanders on the sidewalk outside the mall. "I don’t know how long I was there. I woke up here in the hospital, and then I look over and I got all these blisters on me."

Cantwell was one of at least 23 people hospitalized for pavement burns at University Medical Center’s Lions Burn Care Center in June, according to UMC spokesperson Scott Kerbs. This marks a significant increase from last June, when only three people were admitted for similar injuries.

Record-Breaking Heat

June 2024 was the hottest June in Las Vegas history, with an average daily high temperature of 106.2 degrees, surpassing previous records. The forecast for July suggests even higher temperatures, with the average daily high reaching 110.8 degrees as of July 5. The National Weather Service predicted highs of 118 degrees for multiple days, potentially setting new records for the city.

"A dangerous and historic heatwave is just getting started across the area," the Las Vegas forecast office of the National Weather Service reported.

Medical Challenges

Dr. Syed Saquib, medical director of the Lions Burn Care Center, anticipates a busy summer due to the extreme heat. Saquib treats various burn injuries, including those caused by hot pavement. Pavement burns can be particularly severe, often requiring surgeries to remove damaged tissue and perform skin grafts.

Cantwell suffered second- and third-degree burns on his left arm, backside, and leg. He needed multiple surgeries and was discharged from the hospital on July 4. Recovery will be lengthy, as Cantwell must avoid water and sunlight on the injured areas for an extended period.

Causes and Prevention

Saquib noted that pavement temperatures can exceed 160 degrees in the summer, causing severe burns within minutes of contact. Many patients with pavement burns are found unconscious due to various reasons, such as alcohol consumption, dehydration, or medical conditions like seizures or diabetes.

People often underestimate the danger of hot pavement. "Pavement can burn skin through clothing, especially thin garments, no problem," Saquib explained.

Jim Andersen, chief of code enforcement for Clark County Animal Protection Services, highlighted the risk for pets as well. Dog owners should avoid walking their pets on hot pavement, and if a person cannot hold their hand on the pavement for more than seven seconds, it’s too hot for a dog's paws.

Practical Tips

To avoid pavement burns, Saquib recommends wearing shoes with thick soles, drinking plenty of water, and seeking shade when outdoors. He also keeps a small cloth in his car to handle hot surfaces, such as steering wheels or door knobs.

"Any metallic surface in the desert heat can heat up and can cause burns," Saquib added.

As Las Vegas faces unprecedented temperatures, residents and visitors must take extra precautions to stay safe and prevent heat-related injuries.

🃏 Phil Hellmuth Joins WSOP Main Event with Martial Arts Flair

Phil Hellmuth, the 17-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion, is ready to compete for more chips at the prestigious tournament. On Friday, he made a memorable entrance for Flight 1C of the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em World Championship at Horseshoe Las Vegas, donning a karate gi and black belt while Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting" blared over the PA system.

Spectacle and Showmanship

Hellmuth's arrival was nothing short of theatrical. His entourage, which included professional poker players Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, Scotty Nguyen, and Jeff Gross, also dressed in martial arts cosplay. Actress Shannon Elizabeth and Cates even staged a brief fight scene near the PokerGO feature table before Hellmuth took his seat.

Known as the "Poker Brat" for his larger-than-life persona, Hellmuth has turned his entrance into a spectacle in recent years. In 2022, he arrived dressed as Darth Vader but was eliminated before the first break. Last summer, he came as P.T. Barnum from "The Greatest Showman."

Current Performance

Hellmuth, who won the Main Event in 1989, has had a strong showing at this year's WSOP. He has secured nine cashes, with his best result being a fourth-place finish in a $1,500 buy-in Mixed Omaha tournament.

Main Event Details

The Main Event continues on Saturday with Day 1D, the final starting flight. Registration remains open until 4:40 p.m. on Monday, with the final table scheduled to begin on July 16. As the competition intensifies, all eyes will be on Hellmuth to see if he can add another championship to his illustrious career.

Trump Favored to Win Election as Harris Tops Democratic Nomination Odds

Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the betting favorite to secure the Democratic nomination, surpassing President Joe Biden. Harris' odds have risen to 44.0 percent, or +127, following Biden’s poorly received performance in the June 27 debate with former President Donald Trump.

Current Betting Odds

According to electionbettingodds.com, which aggregates live odds from several platforms including Betfair.com, FTX.com, Polymarket.com, PredictIt.org, and Smarkets.com, the current standings for the Democratic nomination are:

  • Kamala Harris: 44.0 percent (+127)

  • Joe Biden: 35.3 percent (+183)

  • Michelle Obama: 6.6 percent (14-1)

  • Gavin Newsom: 6.3 percent (15-1)

Presidential Election Odds

For the presidential election, Trump is the odds-on favorite to win back the White House:

  • Donald Trump: -139 (58.2 percent)

  • Kamala Harris: +450 (18.2 percent)

  • Joe Biden: +762 (11.6 percent)

A negative number indicates the amount a bettor must wager to win $100. Conversely, a positive number shows the potential winnings on a $100 bet.

🎰 MGM and Caesars Set to Gain from Mirage and Tropicana Shutdowns

The two largest casino operators on the Las Vegas Strip, Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International, are expected to see significant economic benefits following the closure of two nearby properties. According to John DeCree, director of equity research at CBRE Group Inc., these closures will drive up average daily rates (ADR) and revenue margins for existing operators.

Key Closures

The Tropicana Las Vegas closed in April, and the Mirage is set to shut down on July 17. Together, these closures will remove 4,511 hotel rooms from the Strip’s main corridor, a 4.9 percent reduction in supply. The Mirage alone had 3,044 rooms and generated approximately $596 million in revenue and $169 million in EBITDAR in 2023.

Economic Impact

DeCree’s analysis indicates that the closure of the Mirage, in particular, presents a significant opportunity for other operators to capture the displaced demand. With ample room inventory and prime center-Strip locations, Caesars and MGM are well-positioned to benefit.

  • MGM Resorts International: With 37,243 rooms on the main resort corridor, MGM controls 40.4 percent of the Strip's hotel room supply. CBRE estimates that MGM could see an increase of $69 million to $102 million in annualized EBITDAR due to the Mirage’s closure.

  • Caesars Entertainment: Operating 20,630 rooms on or near the Strip, Caesars holds 22.4 percent of the total room supply. DeCree projects that Caesars could gain $31 million to $49 million in incremental EBITDA from the displaced demand.

Market Dynamics

DeCree noted that the already high occupancy rates at Caesars and MGM properties could lead to challenges during large-scale events and weekends. This strain on room availability could result in budget-conscious travelers turning to properties like The Strat, owned by Golden Entertainment, while higher-end guests might choose Wynn's luxury properties.

  • Wynn Resorts: With its two luxury properties, Wynn could potentially generate between $8.7 million and $31.4 million in additional EBITDAR.

  • Golden Entertainment (The Strat): The company could see an increase of $2.5 million to $4.5 million in EBITDAR from the Mirage’s closure.

Overall Benefit

DeCree concluded that the reduction in available rooms would benefit all Strip operators, leading to higher ADR as more customers compete for fewer rooms. This dynamic is expected to enhance revenue margins across the board.

“This represents significant underlying demand for the Las Vegas Strip that will need to find a home,” DeCree wrote. “We see a clear benefit for all Strip operators with more customers chasing fewer rooms and ultimately driving higher average daily rates.”

Summary

The closures of the Tropicana and Mirage casinos on the Las Vegas Strip present a substantial opportunity for existing operators, particularly Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts International. With reduced room supply, these companies are poised to capture increased demand, driving higher revenue and profitability in the competitive Las Vegas market.

🌭 Patrick Bertoletti Wins Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Absence of Joey Chestnut

Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago devoured 58 hot dogs to win his first men’s title at the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, benefiting from the absence of the event’s biggest star, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut.

A Tight Race

Bertoletti, 39, emerged victorious in a competitive 10-minute race that saw the lead change hands several times. He defeated 13 competitors from around the globe, proving his mettle in the high-stakes eating contest held every Independence Day on New York’s Coney Island.

“I wasn’t going to stop eating until the job was done,” Bertoletti said.

His performance surpassed his previous record of 55 hot dogs, marking a significant personal achievement.

The Absence of a Champion

The reigning men’s champion, Joey Chestnut, did not participate in this year’s competition due to a sponsorship disagreement. Chestnut, who has won 16 out of the last 17 contests, competed instead against soldiers at a U.S. Army base in El Paso later in the day.

“With Joey not here, I knew I had a shot,” Bertoletti said. “I was able to unlock something that I don’t know where it came from. But I’m not complaining.”

Preparation and Determination

Bertoletti revealed that he had lost weight and practiced intensely for three months, driven by the opportunity presented by Chestnut’s absence.

Women’s Division

Earlier in the day, defending champion Miki Sudo of Florida secured her 10th title in the women’s division by consuming 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes, setting a new world record for women.

“I’m just happy to call this mine for another year,” Sudo said after winning her 10th pink belt.

The 38-year-old dental hygiene student improved significantly from last year when she ate 39 1/2 hot dogs. She defeated 13 competitors, including her main rival, Mayoi Ebihara of Japan, who ate 37 hot dogs and finished second for the second consecutive year. Sudo also outperformed her partner, former Florida bodybuilder Nicholas Wehry, who ate 46 hot dogs in the men’s competition.

Historical Context and Event Atmosphere

Bertoletti’s victory marks the first time the famed mustard belt has gone to someone other than Chestnut since 2015. Thousands of fans, many wearing foam hot dog hats, attended the event held outside the original Nathan’s location in Brooklyn’s Coney Island, a popular summer destination known for its amusement parks and carnival atmosphere.

Rich Shea, CEO of Major League Eating, which organizes the event, noted the crowd's enthusiasm despite Chestnut’s absence.

“Just a great competitor, a great guy, a grown man, and a man who’s made a choice not to be here today,” Shea said of Chestnut on ESPN. “But fortunately for us, tens of thousands of people are crowding around Nathan’s Famous. It’s a pilgrimage every year. This is not a paid Hollywood crowd. This is excitement.”

Global Participation and Prizes

Competitors came from over a dozen states and five continents, including Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Australia, and the Czech Republic, vying for the coveted title and $10,000 prize money.

Chestnut’s Alternate Competition

Last year, Chestnut won the title by eating 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, with his record standing at 76 hot dogs, set in 2021. This year, he was initially disinvited from the contest due to a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, a plant-based meat substitute company that advertised during the event.

Although Major League Eating reversed the ban, Chestnut chose to spend the holiday with the troops. He stated he wouldn’t return to the Coney Island contest without an apology.

The event at the Fort Bliss army base in El Paso was scheduled for 5 p.m. ET, with Chestnut competing to out-eat four soldiers in five minutes. Impossible Foods promoted Chestnut’s YouTube livestream of the exhibition by flying banners over Los Angeles and Miami and pledged to donate to an organization supporting military families based on the number of hot dogs consumed.
