Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Classified Documents Case

In a surprising turn of events, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump on Monday. The decision came after defense lawyers successfully argued that the special counsel who filed the charges was illegally appointed.

Key Points:

  1. Case Background

    • Trump was facing dozens of felony counts related to illegally hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and obstructing FBI efforts to retrieve them.

    • The charges were considered among the most serious legal threats against the former president.

  2. Defense Argument

    • Defense lawyers challenged the legality of special counsel Jack Smith's appointment under the Constitution’s Appointments Clause.

    • They argued that Smith's office was improperly funded by the Justice Department.

  3. Judge's Ruling

    • Judge Aileen Cannon agreed with the defense, stating that the Constitution grants Congress a crucial role in appointing principal and inferior officers, a role that cannot be overtaken by the Executive Branch.

    • In her 93-page order, Cannon emphasized that this constitutional provision must be upheld regardless of the circumstances.

  4. Prosecution's Response

    • Smith’s team had contested the defense’s argument, suggesting that even if the defense was correct, the appropriate remedy would not be to dismiss the entire case.

    • A spokesman for Smith’s team did not immediately comment on the ruling.

  5. Immediate Reactions

    • Neither the Trump team nor the Smith team had immediate comments following the decision.

Conclusion

Judge Cannon's dismissal of the case brings an abrupt end to what was once seen as a significant legal threat to Donald Trump. The ruling underscores the importance of the constitutional provisions governing the appointment of government officials and sets a precedent for the interpretation of the Appointments Clause.

Republicans to Proceed with 2024 National Convention in Milwaukee Despite Trump Assassination Attempt

Despite the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Republicans from across the country will proceed as planned with the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was struck in the ear during the shooting, which killed one rally attendee and critically wounded two others. Initially considering a delay, Trump decided against altering his schedule.

Trump's Resolve and Official Statements

In a statement on social media, Trump emphasized, “I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else.” The National Republican Committee and the Trump campaign reiterated this sentiment, confirming that Trump will join the convention to share his vision for America.

Convention Goals and Context

The convention will officially select the party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees, highlight the Republican platform, and rally support ahead of the November election. Initially expected to be a celebratory event, the mood has shifted to one of unity and resilience following the assassination attempt. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley called for strength and prayers, emphasizing that politics is now secondary to the safety and well-being of those affected.

Key Aspects to Watch at the Convention

1. Trump's Vice Presidential Pick

Trump is expected to announce his vice presidential candidate soon. The shortlist reportedly includes Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. Trump stressed the importance of selecting a vice president capable of stepping into the presidency if necessary.

2. Republican Platform Highlights

The Republican National Committee recently adopted Trump’s 2024 platform, focusing on key issues such as border security, economic growth, energy independence, military revitalization, and justice system reform. Notable proposals include significant tax cuts for workers and the elimination of taxes on tips, which could appeal to Nevada’s large hospitality workforce. The platform notably omits any mention of abortion and softens the party’s stance on same-sex marriage, aiming to create a more inclusive platform.

3. Nevada’s Prominence

Nevada’s importance as a battleground state is underscored by frequent visits from top politicians and its role at the convention. Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald will give a speech and present the official nomination to Trump. Sigal Chattah, Nevada’s National Committeewoman, will assist with convention law enforcement and election integrity efforts. Additionally, notable Nevadans such as GOP Senate candidate Sam Brown and UFC chief executive Dana White are scheduled to speak at the convention.

Convention Activities and Reporting

The Review-Journal will be on-site in Milwaukee to cover the convention’s activities, focusing on Nevada’s delegates and the overall atmosphere. The event promises to be a significant moment for the Republican Party as it prepares for the upcoming election cycle.

The convention, despite the shadow of the assassination attempt, aims to unify the party and project a vision of strength and resilience. As Trump continues to push forward with his campaign, the Republican National Convention will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s strategy and message leading up to the 2024 election.

Jordan Griff Leads Final Table of WSOP Main Event

Jordan Griff, a recreational poker player from Schaumburg, Illinois, has secured the chip lead as the final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event approaches. Griff accumulated 143.7 million chips by the end of Day 8 of the $10,000 buy-in No-limit Hold’em World Championship, which halted late Sunday at Horseshoe Las Vegas.

Path to the Final Table

Griff’s journey to the chip lead was marked by pivotal moments, including surviving an all-in on the first hand of Day 8. He managed to hit a two-outer on the river against Jessie Bryant, doubling up and gaining momentum. His night concluded with a significant hand where he made quad fives against Joe Serock, securing a massive pot and finishing with 90 big blinds.

Before the Main Event, Griff had a modest live tournament earnings record of $47,192, with his biggest score being $18,104.

The Final Nine

The tournament resumes on Tuesday with the final nine players vying for the $10 million first prize. Each of the remaining players is guaranteed a minimum of $1 million. Several experienced professionals are among those chasing Griff:

  1. Jordan Griff (Schaumburg, Illinois): 143,700,000 chips

  2. Brian Kim (Diamond Bar, California): 94,600,000 chips (59 big blinds)

    • Kim’s notable knockout of Yegor Moroz in 15th place propelled him up the leaderboard. This marks Kim’s second deep run in the Main Event, following a 23rd-place finish in 2022.

  3. Niklas Astedt (Gothenburg, Sweden): 94,200,000 chips (59 big blinds)

    • Known online as “Lena900,” Astedt is revered in the online poker community with over $47 million in documented winnings.

  4. Joe Serock (San Diego, California): 83,600,000 chips (52 big blinds)

    • Serock led much of the evening session after eliminating Kristen Foxen in 13th place. Foxen had been on the brink of making history as the second woman to reach the final table in the Main Event’s 55-year history.

  5. Jason Sagle (Sudbury, Ontario): 67,300,000 chips

  6. Boris Angelov (Sofia, Bulgaria): 52,900,000 chips

  7. Jonathan Tamayo (Humble, Texas): 26,700,000 chips

    • Tamayo boasts four WSOP Circuit event wins and finished 21st in the 2009 Main Event.

  8. Malo Latinois (Liffre, France): 25,500,000 chips

  9. Andres Gonzalez (Cartagena, Spain): 18,300,000 chips

Notable Moments

  • Kristen Foxen’s Run: Foxen’s elimination was a highlight of the tournament. Seeking to become only the second woman to reach the final table, she went all-in holding second pair and a straight draw against Serock’s top two-pair. Serock held on, winning the largest pot of the tournament up to that point.

  • WSOP Bracelets: Among the final nine, only Brian Kim and Joe Serock have previously won WSOP bracelets, awarded for tournament victories.

What’s Next

The excitement continues as the final nine players compete on Tuesday for the coveted WSOP Main Event title and the $10 million first prize. The final table promises intense action and high stakes as these players, from diverse backgrounds and skill levels, aim to etch their names in poker history.

🎰 Las Vegas Says Goodbye to The Mirage and Its Iconic Volcano

Las Vegas — and the world — are saying goodbye to the beloved Mirage. Sunday night marked the last opportunity for guests to book a room before the iconic hotel’s full closure on Wednesday.

A New Era in 1989

When The Mirage first opened its doors in 1989, it revolutionized the Las Vegas Strip. The resort, with its South Seas theme, brought a family-friendly vibe to the area. Attractions like the Dolphin Habitat, the Siegfried and Roy White Tiger show, and the famous erupting volcano made it a favorite for tourists and locals alike.

Now, only the volcano remains, but its days are numbered.

The Volcano: A Lasting Memory

Erupting hourly four times each night, the volcano has been a signature family-friendly free attraction in Las Vegas. It dazzles onlookers with its displays of fire, smoke, water, and light. For Yoseline Constantino, a Las Vegas native, the volcano has been a lifelong fixture.

“My memories of The Mirage are coming here as a little kid and coming to see the volcano,” Constantino reminisced.

Hard Rock's Acquisition and Transformation Plans

In December 2021, Hard Rock International announced its purchase of The Mirage from MGM Resorts International. The plans include adding a guitar-shaped hotel next to the Strip, necessitating the demolition of the volcano. This decision has been met with dismay from many fans of the landmark.

A Change.org petition to save the volcano garnered over 11,000 signatures, but despite the support, the volcano is set for its final shows.

“This is a historic place, been here for years and it’s going to be gone. I am sad to see it go,” shared Larry Dupard, a Las Vegas local.

Cherished Memories

Chris Jacobs from Sacramento recounted a memorable visit: “We took a long walk from Circus Circus one time to just see the volcano... Very loud nice explosion fire, the steam coming up was intense.” For Jacobs, the volcano is always a must-see on his numerous trips to Vegas. He expressed his gratitude for being in Vegas during The Mirage’s final days and witnessing the volcano show one last time.

“Going to go in there now make sure I get my last goodbyes,” Jacobs told FOX5 outside the property.

Closing Ceremony

The Mirage will host a closing ceremony on Wednesday starting at 9 a.m. to honor its history and legacy as the first true mega-resort on the Strip. The property will then officially close at 11 a.m., marking the end of an era.

Looking Ahead

As The Mirage prepares to close its doors, it leaves behind a legacy of innovation and family-friendly entertainment. The transition to Hard Rock’s vision represents the ever-evolving nature of the Las Vegas Strip, but the memories and impact of The Mirage will continue to resonate with those who experienced its magic.
