✈ Las Vegas Flights Disrupted Amid Global Microsoft Outage
Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport is grappling with significant delays and cancellations on Friday morning due to a massive global tech outage. As of 7:30 a.m., Flight Aware reported 116 flights were delayed and 55 canceled at Harry Reid International, reflecting the widespread impact of the disruption.
Local Impact:
The outage is affecting businesses of all sizes across Las Vegas. At Red Rock Resort in Summerlin, video screens displayed a message indicating that the operating system on their PCs had failed and needed repair. Despite the technical issues, the resort continued to operate normally. Similarly, Dunkin Donuts and Lifetime Fitness in Summerlin remained open, though they were also dealing with system problems.
A Global Perspective:
This tech outage, attributed to a faulty update in Microsoft Windows, has grounded flights, knocked banks and hospital systems offline, and disrupted media outlets globally. CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, confirmed that the issue was not a security incident or cyberattack and that a fix was on the way. The problem arose when a defective update was deployed to computers running Microsoft Windows.
Disruptions in the U.S. and Worldwide:
The disarray continued and escalated as the outage affected airlines' check-in and booking services, causing long lines at airports in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. News outlets in Australia were pushed off-air for hours, hospitals struggled with appointment systems, and banks in South Africa and New Zealand reported outages affecting their payment systems and online services.
Airlines and Major Events Affected:
In the U.S., major airlines like United, American, Delta, and Allegiant were grounded. In the U.K., airlines and railways faced longer waiting times. With the upcoming Paris Olympics, athletes and spectators experienced delays, though the organizers reported that ticketing and the torch relay remained unaffected.
Response and Resolution Efforts:
Microsoft 365 posted on social media platform X that they were working on rerouting impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate the issue and observed a positive trend in service availability. CrowdStrike issued a statement saying they were actively working with customers impacted by the defect and that a fix had been deployed.
Broader Implications:
The outage highlighted global dependency on a few major software providers. Cyber expert James Bore noted that critical systems being offline could cause significant harm, especially in healthcare where delayed appointments could have severe consequences.
Specific Regional Impacts:
New Zealand: The acting prime minister stated that officials were working swiftly to understand the impacts, noting the inconvenience to the public and businesses.
Germany and Europe: Airports like Berlin-Brandenburg and Zurich faced suspensions in operations, while Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport warned of major impacts on flights.
Australia: Banks, airlines, and media outlets experienced severe disruptions, with national news broadcasters unable to air programs.
Healthcare Systems: Hospitals in several countries, including the U.K., Germany, and Israel, faced operational challenges, particularly in managing patient appointments and elective surgeries.
Conclusion:
As the world grapples with the aftermath of this tech outage, businesses and essential services are working tirelessly to restore normal operations. The incident underscores the vulnerability of global systems to software failures and the cascading effects such outages can have across various sectors.
❎ Trump Addresses Republican National Convention Following Assassination Attempt
Former President Donald Trump delivered a poignant and dramatic speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, marking his first public appearance since last week’s assassination attempt. The speech included tributes, recounting personal experiences, and calls for unity and strength.
Tribute to Corey Comperatore
Trump paid an emotional tribute to Corey Comperatore, a firefighter and former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department in Pennsylvania, who was killed during the assassination attempt at Trump's rally. Trump referred to Comperatore as a "fine man" who heroically acted as a human shield to protect his family from the gunfire.
“Tragically, the shooter claimed the life of one of our fellow Americans, Corey Comperatore, and seriously wounded two other great warriors, David Dutch and James Copenhaver,” Trump said. “Our love and prayers are with them, and always will be.”
To honor Comperatore, Trump walked over to his firefighting helmet and turnout coat placed on stage, kissed the helmet, and asked for a moment of silence. He emphasized Comperatore's selfless act and his dedication to his family and community.
Recounting the Assassination Attempt
At the beginning of his speech, Trump vividly recounted the assassination attempt. He described hearing a loud whizzing sound and feeling a sharp pain in his right ear, which he quickly realized was a bullet.
“In one movement, I proceeded to drop to the ground. There was blood pouring everywhere,” Trump recalled. “Yet, in a certain way, I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”
Despite the chaos, Trump noted the bravery of the rally attendees, who stood firm and even pointed out the sniper, aiding in saving many lives.
Tribute to Melania Trump
Trump also took a moment to honor his wife, Melania Trump, praising her for her strength and her call for national unity in a letter she wrote to America following the assassination attempt.
“I am thinking of you, now, my fellow Americans,” she wrote. “Dawn is here again. Let us reunite. Now.”
Trump highlighted the positive reception of her letter within the Republican Party and suggested it could be incorporated into the party’s platform.
The Chart That Saved His Life
In a light-hearted moment, Trump displayed a chart showing the number of illegal immigrant crossings into the U.S., which had been part of his speech during the Butler, Pennsylvania rally. He credited the chart for saving his life, as it prompted him to turn his head just before the gunman opened fire.
“Last time I put up that chart, I never really got to look at it,” he said to laughs from the crowd. “But without that chart, I would not be here today.”
Remarks on President Biden
Trump briefly mentioned President Biden, comparing his administration unfavorably to the worst presidents in U.S. history.
“If you took the 10 worst presidents in the history of the United States and added them all up… they will not have done the damage that Biden has done,” he said. “I’m only going to use the term once. Biden. I’m not going to use the name anymore. Just one time.”
Conclusion
Trump's address at the Republican National Convention was a blend of tribute, personal reflection, and political discourse. His emphasis on unity and resilience, combined with the emotional tributes and recounting of his near-death experience, aimed to rally support and inspire strength within the party and his supporters.
🏀 Las Vegas Aces Players Start Receiving Payments from LVCVA Sponsorship Deal
Several players from the Las Vegas Aces have begun to receive monthly payments as part of a new sponsorship agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), according to LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill. The deal, announced on May 17, involves $100,000 sponsorships for each player, funded by the tourism agency.
Details of the Sponsorship Agreement
Hill disclosed that just over half of the Aces' 12-player roster are currently receiving the sponsorship payments. However, he did not specify which players are part of the agreement. The remaining players are in the process of finalizing their agreements with the LVCVA.
“They’re busy, they’ve got a season to play, their agents are busy, we’ve gone back and forth with documents,” Hill explained. “So it’s just part of the process.”
WNBA Investigation and Communication
The WNBA is conducting an investigation into the sponsorship deal, but Hill emphasized that this has not impacted the signing process for the players. He noted that the delay in finalizing agreements is due to logistical challenges rather than the investigation.
“We’re not waiting for the league; we’re just moving forward,” Hill stated. “We’ve got a relationship with the NBA, and we’ve got a great relationship with the WNBA, so if they want to communicate with us, that’s fine. But they don’t have jurisdiction over us, and our sponsorship deal with the players, we think is the completely appropriate thing to do.”
Ongoing Process and Future Expectations
Hill assured that the LVCVA is actively working with the players who have signed the agreements to outline the specifics of their sponsorship deals. The agency remains confident in the appropriateness and legality of their sponsorship strategy.
“The WNBA has given no update to the LVCVA regarding the investigation, but it wouldn’t delay the process,” Hill confirmed.
Impact on the Players and the League
This sponsorship deal is significant as it reflects an innovative approach to athlete compensation and partnership between a major tourism authority and professional sports team. The payments are intended to support the players financially while also promoting the city of Las Vegas through their public appearances and endorsements.
Conclusion
As the LVCVA continues to finalize agreements with the remaining Aces players, the sponsorship deal highlights the growing commercial relationships within women's professional sports. This initiative not only benefits the players but also strengthens the ties between the Las Vegas community and its successful WNBA team.
✈ Allegiant Travel Co. Promotes Gregory Anderson to President and CEO
Allegiant Travel Co. has appointed Gregory Anderson as its new President and CEO, effective September 1, following the retirement of Maurice Gallagher from the role. Gallagher, who will continue to serve as the executive chairman of the board, expressed confidence in Anderson’s leadership capabilities, highlighting his extensive experience and contributions to the company.
Transition in Leadership
Gregory Anderson, who joined Allegiant in 2010, has been a pivotal figure in the company’s management, holding several key leadership positions, including Chief Financial Officer. He played a crucial role in navigating Allegiant through the financial turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most challenging periods in the airline industry’s history.
“After working closely with him for the past 15 years, I have first-hand knowledge of his phenomenal leadership skills, business acumen, industry knowledge and work ethic that make him well-prepared to take on these added responsibilities,” Gallagher stated. “He’s incredibly well-respected within the company and throughout the industry. In many ways, he’s already doing the job. It’s time to make it official.”
Anderson’s Background and Vision
Before joining Allegiant, Anderson worked at U.S. Airways and Ernst & Young, focusing on the commercial aviation sector. His industry expertise and strategic vision have been instrumental in Allegiant’s growth and stability.
“I’ve had the great fortune to be mentored over many years by one of the most respected innovators and CEOs in the airline industry, Maury Gallagher,” Anderson said. “He has shown me the importance of thinking like an owner and how our team members are the foundation of our success. As CEO, I look forward to extending Allegiant’s success and serving with the same level of passion and dedication they bring to become better every day.”
History of Leadership Changes
This marks the second time Gallagher has stepped down as CEO. In 2022, John Redmond, an Allegiant board member since 2007 and a former executive with MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment, was named CEO. However, Redmond resigned in September 2023, prompting Gallagher, the airline’s founder and largest shareholder, to resume the position temporarily.
Moving Forward
Anderson’s appointment is seen as a testament to Allegiant’s commitment to internal growth and leadership development. Gallagher emphasized that cultivating talent within the company is a core strength, and Anderson’s promotion reflects this strategy.
Conclusion
With Anderson at the helm, Allegiant is poised to continue its trajectory of success, leveraging his deep industry knowledge and leadership experience. His vision for the future includes building on the company’s achievements and addressing new challenges with the same dedication and innovation that have defined his career.
