🌎 Microsoft Outage Disrupts Travel and Business Operations in Las Vegas
A massive outage of Microsoft systems caused widespread service disruptions globally, affecting flights, casinos, and various businesses. The ripple effects were felt heavily in Las Vegas, where the outage impacted several sectors from airlines to casinos.
Cause of the Outage
At the center of the disruption is CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that provides software to numerous companies worldwide. The problem arose when CrowdStrike deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows. The company assured that the issue was not a security incident or cyberattack and that a fix had been deployed. Despite this, the chaos continued for hours after the initial problem was detected, affecting banks, healthcare systems, emergency services, transportation providers, and retailers around the country.
Impact in Las Vegas
Las Vegas experienced significant disruptions due to the outage:
Airport Disruptions
Harry Reid International Airport saw long lines and numerous delays as major airlines grappled with the tech outage. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, the airport managed relatively better compared to others globally, but the impact was still substantial. By late afternoon on Friday, there were 229 flight delays (about 28% of the day’s schedule) and 48 cancellations at Reid. Worldwide, there were 40,974 delays and 10,525 cancellations.
Travelers at Reid Airport faced considerable inconvenience. Sylvia Wood, who was in town for the NAACP’s 115th National Convention, experienced frustration when her Spirit Airlines flight was canceled after passengers had already boarded.
Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air's website was inaccessible early Friday but was restored by late afternoon. Southwest Airlines, the airport’s busiest carrier, reported minimal impact from the outage.
Casino and Business Disruptions
Some casinos, like Green Valley Ranch in Henderson, had to cash out players manually due to slot machine errors, resulting in long wait times. Jesus Aguilar, 21, reported waiting over an hour to cash out his winnings.
Other major casino properties like The Venetian, Treasure Island, and Wynn Resorts reported normal operations. MGM Resorts International also confirmed that its hotels and gaming floors were operating without issues.
Media and Other Business Impacts
Las Vegas’ NBC affiliate experienced a significant disruption, dropping local programming late Thursday night and resuming early Friday morning. Other local stations did not report issues.
Financial sector companies such as Visa, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase experienced service disruptions. Las Vegas resident Steve Loehner faced interruptions with his Charles Schwabb account but noted that major stock exchanges like the NYSE and LSE continued operating.
Government Response
The Biden administration stated that the White House was in regular contact with CrowdStrike officials and was working with federal agencies to assess the event’s impact.
Moving Forward
By midday Friday, many business operations in Las Vegas showed signs of returning to normalcy, although some disruptions persisted. Airport officials advised travelers to monitor their flight statuses and extended operating hours for several food and beverage options to accommodate the influx of travelers.
Conclusion
The Microsoft outage underscores the vulnerability of global systems to software issues and the wide-reaching consequences of such disruptions. Businesses and services in Las Vegas and around the world are working to restore full functionality and prevent future occurrences.
❎ Trump Promises Economic Relief for Nevada Workers, Endorses Sam Brown at RNC
Former President Donald Trump highlighted the importance of Nevada in his remarks at the Republican National Convention, signaling his strategy to secure victory in the state he lost in both 2016 and 2020. Addressing the crowd on Thursday night, Trump formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination and outlined key points of his economic relief plan, including a proposal to eliminate taxes on tipped wages.
"No Tax on Tips"
Trump emphasized his plan to stop taxing tipped wages, an idea he claimed originated from a conversation with a server in Nevada.
Trump explained the broad impact of this policy on various workers, including waitresses, caddies, and drivers.
Campaign Strategy
Trump introduced the idea as part of his campaign last month and spent considerable time promoting it during a meeting with Senate Republicans. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) voiced support for the proposal, with Hawley noting its significance for working people struggling to get ahead in the current economy.
Nevada's Importance
Nevada, heavily reliant on its tourism industry, particularly in Las Vegas, could be crucial in the upcoming election. Trump’s proposal aims to resonate with the large workforce in the hospitality sector.
A June Fox News Poll indicated a positive outlook for Trump in Nevada, showing him leading President Biden by five percentage points (50% to 45%). This poll was conducted before the presidential debate and the assassination attempt on Trump.
Support for Sam Brown
In his speech, Trump also endorsed Sam Brown, a U.S. Senate candidate for Nevada and a former U.S. Army Captain severely injured in Afghanistan. Trump’s recognition of Brown and his sacrifices underscored the broader Republican strategy to turn Nevada red in the upcoming elections.
Impact on Down-Ballot Democrats
With growing uncertainty surrounding President Biden's candidacy, some analysts predict potential negative impacts on down-ballot Democrats, including those in Nevada. This could provide an additional advantage to Trump and other Republican candidates like Brown in the key swing state.
Conclusion
Trump’s focus on economic relief and worker-friendly policies aims to win over Nevada’s voters, particularly those in the tourism industry. His strategic endorsements and campaign promises highlight his commitment to securing a victory in the battleground state, which could be pivotal for the 2024 election.
🏀 Aces’ Influence Grows as Wilson, Teammates Gear Up for Competitive All-Star Game
As Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson addressed the media on Friday, she reminisced about her first WNBA All-Star experience in 2018. Back then, she was a reserve on Team Elena Delle Donne, surrounded by legends like Sylvia Fowles, Sue Bird, and Seimone Augustus. On the opposing team, Maya Moore played under Candace Parker's leadership. None of those players are currently active in the league, having either retired or taken breaks. Wilson fondly recalled how her veteran teammates pushed her to act as a captain before the game started.
Now a two-time MVP, Wilson is making her fifth All-Star appearance and her second as an Olympian. This year, the exhibition game will be a contest between Team USA and Team WNBA, diverging from the usual East vs. West format. Four Aces players—Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young—are on the Olympic roster.
A Different Kind of All-Star Game
The All-Star Game, typically a laid-back event, will be more competitive this year as Team USA seeks to establish its identity with just two practices under their belt.
Stewart referenced the 2021 All-Star Weekend when Team USA played against WNBA's non-Olympians, resulting in a 93-85 win for Team WNBA. Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings scored 26 points in that game and will face the Olympians again on Saturday.
Wilson's Perspective on Team USA
Wilson, Gray, and Stewart were part of the 2021 team that won a seventh consecutive gold medal for the U.S. in Tokyo. The 2024 squad includes first-time Olympians like Alyssa Thomas, Sabrina Ionescu, and Kahleah Copper. Plum and Young, who previously competed in the 3x3 Olympic competition, are also first-timers on the 5-on-5 team.
The Influence of the Aces
Wilson described being an All-Star during an Olympic year as chaotic due to numerous media obligations and events, alongside intricate brand activations.
The Aces have influenced the league significantly, particularly with their state-of-the-art facilities. In April 2023, the Aces unveiled a 64,000-square-foot practice facility and team headquarters in Henderson, next to the Raiders' headquarters. This building set a new standard in the league.
The Phoenix Mercury, hosts of the All-Star Game, followed suit by opening their new 58,000-square-foot, $100 million practice facility on Thursday. It features two courts and a logo of Diana Taurasi, who has been in the league since 2004.
Colie Edison, the WNBA’s chief growth officer, highlighted the Aces' impact during the league’s preview of its third WNBA Live offering. This fan festival, featuring player appearances and other events, expanded from its 2023 venue at Mandalay Bay to a larger space at the Phoenix Convention Center, increasing sponsorships from 13 in Las Vegas to 24 in Phoenix.
🦹♂️ 17-Year-Old Suspect in MGM Cyberattack Apprehended in England
Law enforcement authorities in England arrested a 17-year-old boy on Thursday in Wallsal, a small town in central England, for his suspected involvement in the September cyberattack that significantly disrupted operations at MGM Resorts International for ten days. The arrest was part of a coordinated effort involving the Regional Organised Crime Unit for the West Midlands, Britain’s National Crime Agency, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and MGM Resorts.
Details of the Arrest
The unnamed teenager was taken into custody on suspicion of blackmail and offenses under the Computer Misuse Act. He was released on bond following his arrest. Authorities confiscated several digital devices from the suspect’s residence for forensic examination.
International Cooperation
Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division, highlighted the importance of the collaboration between domestic and international partners in addressing cybercrime.
MGM and Caesars Entertainment Attacks
The cyberattack on MGM Resorts began on September 10 and led to significant operational disruptions. This incident followed a similar attack on Caesars Entertainment in August, for which hacker groups Scattered Spider and ALPHV claimed responsibility. While Caesars reportedly paid a $15 million ransom to the hackers and managed to avoid major disruptions, MGM chose not to pay any ransom and instead shut down its systems to prevent further infiltration.
MGM’s Response and Losses
MGM Resorts commended the law enforcement agencies for their efforts in locating and arresting the suspect.
Despite the preventive measures, MGM reportedly incurred losses amounting to $100 million due to the hack. These losses were largely recovered through insurance claims.
Impact on MGM Resorts
The cyberattack caused widespread disruptions at MGM’s properties:
Credit Card Transactions: MGM’s 10 resorts in Las Vegas and other locations in the U.S. were unable to process credit card transactions.
Website and App: MGM’s websites and apps were down.
In-Casino Services: ATMs were offline, and paid parking access was compromised.
Reservations and Email: Restaurant and attraction reservation systems failed, and company email was offline.
Slot Machines: Networked slot machines were shut down, requiring manual payouts to winners.
Statement from British Authorities
Detective Inspector Hinesh Mehta, cybercrime unit manager at the Regional Organised Crime Unit for the West Midlands, described the arrest as a result of a complex investigation involving international cooperation.
Conclusion
The arrest of the 17-year-old suspect in England underscores the global effort to combat cybercrime and the critical role of international cooperation in apprehending those responsible. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the potential consequences of cyberattacks on major organizations.
