😷 Nevada Reports Very High COVID-19 Levels in Wastewater

Tourists who flocked to Las Vegas over the Fourth of July holiday weekend have been linked to a rise in COVID-19 infections, according to local health experts. Dr. Ketan Patel, medical director of UMC’s Adult Emergency Department, noted that the influx of visitors and various large events contributed to the surge.

“We have a surge in viral illnesses for July 4 in particular. For summer holidays, we’re always prepared for a surge in tourists that visit Las Vegas this weekend,” said Dr. Patel. “(July 4) was very close to a weekend where things are going around on the city, large events, international soccer games, concerts, and everything. It brings and draws a lot of people into the city.”

Impact of Heatwave and Indoor Crowding

The recent heatwave has exacerbated the situation by driving people indoors, where the virus spreads more easily. Dr. Anil Mangla, director of the Southern Nevada Health District’s Disease Surveillance and Control Division, emphasized the risk posed by crowded indoor environments.

“What heat is doing is, everybody stays indoors in a crowded area, aggregated area. What you’re going to definitely see is a huge, bigger spread. It’s an opportunity for spread,” said Dr. Mangla.

President Biden’s Positive Test and Wastewater Data

Notably, President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 during his visit to Las Vegas, highlighting the heightened risk in the area.

Nevada is currently among seven states with "very high" levels of COVID-19 activity in wastewater, indicating a broader trend of increasing infections. According to the CDC, the Wastewater Viral Activity Level for Nevada stands at 12.31, significantly higher than the national average of 4.98 and the regional average of 7.23. Other states with similarly high levels include California, Oregon, Texas, Arkansas, Florida, and Maryland.

Rising Infections and Hospital Visits

Wastewater data often serve as an early warning sign for rising infections, according to UNLV Professor Edwin Oh. As of July 15, the Southern Nevada Health District reported 11 COVID-related deaths within the past six weeks. While the health district no longer tracks the number of COVID-related hospitalizations, it does monitor the percentage of emergency department visits potentially related to COVID-19. This percentage has increased from 1.8 percent on June 18 to a range of 2.3 to 2.5 percent by mid-July.

“If we see an increase like we do now, that means we’re looking at a future increase in infections, or viral infections,” Oh explained. “Given that there are high levels of SARS-COV-2 in the wastewater now, it’s suggestive that there are a lot of individuals who are asymptomatic and or symptomatic that are shedding this virus into that wastewater.”

Dominant COVID-19 Strains

In June, the dominant strains in Clark County were KP.2, a mutation of the FLiRT subvariant, and LB.1, a mutation of the Omicron variant, accounting for 34 percent and 29.5 percent of collected samples, respectively. These strains are noted for being more transmissible but less severe.

Concern for Vulnerable Populations

Despite widespread immunity from vaccination and past infections, vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions, remain at risk. Dr. Mangla recommends getting vaccinated, especially with the new vaccine that includes the KP.2 strain, and advises masking, avoiding large crowds, and staying home if testing positive for COVID-19.

Conclusion

The surge in COVID-19 cases in Las Vegas following the Fourth of July weekend underscores the ongoing challenges of managing the pandemic, particularly during large gatherings and in hot weather. Health experts continue to stress the importance of vaccination and precautionary measures to protect vulnerable populations and mitigate the spread of the virus.

Secret Service Director Resigns Amid Trump Assassination Attempt Fallout

The director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, announced her resignation on Tuesday after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump raised serious concerns about the agency's ability to protect current and former presidents. Cheatle had been under increasing pressure to step down amid several investigations into the security lapses that allowed the shooter to get dangerously close to Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Cheatle Takes Responsibility

“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Cheatle said in an email to staff, obtained by The Associated Press. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director.” Cheatle had served as Secret Service director since August 2022 and faced growing scrutiny over the incident on July 13.

The Assassination Attempt

The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get within 135 meters (157 yards) of the stage where Trump was speaking. Despite prior warnings about a threat to Trump’s life and the identification of the roof as a potential vulnerability, security measures failed to prevent the attack. Trump was quickly escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents, and snipers neutralized the shooter. Trump sustained a minor injury, and three other individuals were harmed, with one rallygoer killed.

Congressional Hearing and Resignation

Cheatle's resignation followed a contentious congressional hearing where she faced bipartisan criticism for the security failures. She labeled the assassination attempt as the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades. Despite acknowledging the lapses, Cheatle’s failure to provide specific answers during the hearing intensified calls for her resignation.

Investigations and Future Actions

Lawmakers from both parties have vowed to continue investigating the security breach. President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review, and the Secret Service’s inspector general has launched an investigation. The agency is also reassessing the preparedness and operations of its counter-sniper team.

Background and Legacy

Cheatle, who served in the Secret Service for 27 years, was appointed director in 2022 after a stint as a security executive at PepsiCo. She was the first woman to be named assistant director of protective operations and the second woman to lead the agency. Her tenure was marked by controversy, including issues related to missing text messages from the January 6 Capitol riot.

Reactions

Support for Cheatle had been waning even before her resignation. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had initially supported Cheatle, but bipartisan demands for accountability grew stronger. Former President Trump and other political figures have weighed in on the failures, increasing the pressure on the Secret Service to address and rectify the lapses in security protocols.

Conclusion

Cheatle’s resignation marks a significant turning point for the Secret Service as it faces intense scrutiny and the need for substantial reforms. The agency's ability to adapt and improve its protective measures will be critical as the nation moves closer to the next presidential election and the Democratic National Convention.

🏈 High Demand for Raiders Tickets Continues into 2024 Season

Raiders home games last season ranked among the most profitable in the NFL, generating $127.3 million in gross ticket revenue, the fourth-highest total in the league, according to CNBC's Mike Ozanian. This impressive figure underscores the team's strong fanbase and the appeal of Las Vegas as a destination.

Top Performers in Ticket Revenue

The San Francisco 49ers topped the list with $151 million in ticket revenue, followed by the Dallas Cowboys at $145 million and the Philadelphia Eagles at $129 million. The Raiders and the New York Giants both generated $127 million, according to Ozanian, who cited an anonymous NFL source. Ozanian, a former key contributor to Forbes' professional sports team valuation lists, noted that all ticket sales, including club seat sales, are included in these totals. However, suite sales are not part of the revenue figures.

Impact of Allegiant Stadium

The Raiders sold out their season-ticket allotment and personal seat licenses (PSLs) even before Allegiant Stadium was completed in 2020. The PSLs alone generated $549 million, which was reinvested into the stadium's construction. Since then, Raiders home games have consistently sold out, becoming one of the hottest tickets on the secondary market. This is partly due to Las Vegas being a popular destination for away game fans.

Attendance and Fan Demographics

Last season, Raiders home games at Allegiant Stadium drew an average crowd of 56,972, according to data from the Las Vegas Stadium Authority. Remarkably, 63 percent of these attendees were from out of town, highlighting the city’s draw as a travel destination.

High Demand for 2024 Season Tickets

The demand for Raiders home games remains high for the 2024 season. Following the release of the schedule in May, home games at Allegiant Stadium were the most in-demand tickets on StubHub. The average ticket price for these games was listed at $358, further demonstrating the strong market for Raiders games.

Conclusion

The Raiders’ ability to generate substantial ticket revenue reflects not only the team's dedicated fanbase but also the allure of Las Vegas as a premier destination for sports events. As the team continues to play at Allegiant Stadium, the combination of local support and traveling fans is likely to keep Raiders home games among the most lucrative in the NFL.

🎰 Behind the Scenes: How Casinos Reset Games After Disturbances

Casino-goers often become rowdy while playing games or drinking, but sometimes that rowdiness crosses into big disturbances – like one caught in a viral video where a woman is seen on top of a craps table in Reno, throwing chips at others around her. These incidents, though dramatic, are not uncommon in the bustling environments of casinos. How do casinos manage such disruptions and return the games back to normal for other players?

De-escalation Tactics and Immediate Response

Derk Boss, a veteran with 40 years in casino security and owner of the consultancy firm DJ Boss Associates, explained that handling such disruptions begins with de-escalation tactics.

“They’re trying to keep the gaming going as much as possible with as little disruption as they can,” said Boss. “We normally don’t stop the game whatsoever. We get so adept at this – the dealers and the floor people and security – that they are usually having a quiet conversation or isolating the person to the degree necessary, so the game keeps going.”

Casino staff are trained to manage unruly guests by first attempting to reason with them. However, if the disturbance continues or escalates, it often leads to the removal of the disruptive guest from the game or even the casino.

Surveillance and Game Reset

In worst-case scenarios where the game’s integrity is compromised, casino staff call upon surveillance to review camera footage. This helps them understand the game state and player positions before the disturbance began.

“They’ll do a quick review to put it all back to normal,” Boss explained. “We’ll see where the cards went, who they belonged to, who had what money or chips, and what position they were at. That’s going to take a few minutes, maybe even a little bit longer, but we’re pretty adept due to the frequency of the events so we’re all working together.”

Patience and Communication for Players

For players who are at a table during a disturbance, patience is key. Dealers, floor managers, security, and surveillance teams work quickly to address the issue and reset the game. Boss recommends that players remain calm and communicate with floor staff if they have concerns.

“Be patient. If [the player] is a little confused about things, it’s OK to ask the floor person about what they’re doing,” Boss advised.

If a player is dissatisfied with the resolution, they can always request that a manager call surveillance for further clarification.

The Role of Casino Security Teams

Casino security teams are highly trained to deal with a variety of incidents, ensuring that games continue smoothly and guests feel safe. Their goal is to maintain a balance between providing a secure environment and ensuring that the entertainment experience remains uninterrupted.

Conclusion

Disruptions in casinos, while sometimes inevitable, are managed efficiently through a combination of de-escalation tactics, surveillance reviews, and effective communication. Casino staff are well-equipped to handle these situations, ensuring that the gaming experience for other players resumes as quickly and smoothly as possible. By understanding the protocols in place and exercising patience, players can trust that their concerns will be addressed and the integrity of the game maintained.
