😷 Significant Increase in West Nile Virus Cases in Southern Nevada

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has confirmed 14 cases of West Nile virus in 2024, marking a significant increase from earlier reports. This new data, released on Monday, doubles the number of cases previously documented in July. The year's first two cases were announced on June 26.

Case Breakdown

The SNHD report indicates that out of the 14 confirmed cases, five are non-neuroinvasive and nine are neuroinvasive. Non-neuroinvasive cases usually present milder symptoms, while neuroinvasive cases can lead to severe conditions like encephalitis or meningitis.

Symptoms and Risks

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 20% of those infected with West Nile virus experience symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Severe cases, affecting about 1 in 150 infected individuals, can be serious and sometimes fatal.

Geographic Distribution

The SNHD reports that most West Nile virus activity is concentrated in northwest Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, suggesting environmental or ecological factors contributing to the rise in these areas.

Public Health Response

In response to the increased cases, SNHD has likely intensified mosquito control efforts and public education on preventive measures, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves, and maintaining window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out.

Community Impact and Awareness

The rise in cases has heightened awareness and concern among residents. Community health programs are crucial in disseminating information on preventing mosquito bites and recognizing symptoms. Residents are urged to eliminate standing water around their homes to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.

Conclusion

The doubling of West Nile virus cases in Southern Nevada highlights the need for continued vigilance and proactive prevention measures. Community cooperation and public health efforts are essential in controlling the spread and protecting public health.

Biden’s Cabinet Stands Firm Amid Calls for 25th Amendment

Members of President Biden's Cabinet are reinforcing their support for the president amid calls for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. This support comes as Biden faces mounting pressure over concerns regarding his health and his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. These developments have led some lawmakers to question his ability to serve out the remainder of his term.

Strong Cabinet Support

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's spokesperson told Fox News Digital that Yellen disagrees with calls to invoke the 25th Amendment. Yellen previously stated during a House hearing that President Biden is "extremely effective" in meetings, including lengthy international sessions.

Similarly, representatives for Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm also expressed their bosses' disagreement with calls for Biden to step down. Granholm had earlier dismissed reports suggesting Biden was mentally "slipping," asserting, "The president is utterly on his game."

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack also defended Biden’s capabilities, emphatically stating, "You're d--n right he's capable," in an interview with Agri-Pulse, an agriculture-focused news site.

Concerns and Calls for Action

Despite this strong support from his Cabinet, Biden has been under increased scrutiny following his performance at the first presidential debate in June, where he appeared to struggle with a raspy voice and jumbled words. This debate performance intensified calls from some lawmakers, particularly GOP Senator demands, for the Cabinet to consider invoking the 25th Amendment.

Biden’s Withdrawal from the 2024 Race

Biden announced on Sunday that he would suspend his re-election campaign and endorse Vice President Harris for the Democratic nomination. This decision followed weeks of pressure from within his own party to step down.

Vice President Harris's office reiterated her confidence in Biden's ability to lead. Ernesto Apreza, press secretary to the vice president, stated, "As the vice president has said many times before, the nation is lucky to have President Biden leading our nation."

Conclusion

As the political climate continues to heat up, Biden’s Cabinet remains firm in their support, emphasizing his capabilities and effectiveness as president. Despite calls for his removal and questions about his health, Biden’s team is unified in their stance against invoking the 25th Amendment.

🏀 Miami Heat Clinch First NBA Summer League Title with Christopher’s Heroics

Josh Christopher’s NBA journey has been tumultuous, marked by a series of team changes and stints in the G League. However, for at least one night, all the trials and tribulations seemed worth it. The former first-round pick led the Miami Heat to a 120-118 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Summer League championship game at Thomas & Mack Center on Monday.

Championship Performance

Christopher scored a team-high 24 points, earning MVP honors in the championship game. He shot an impressive 9-for-17 from the floor and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. His performance was crucial in securing Miami’s first NBA Summer League title.

“We had the best team in Summer League because of the individuals that were on the floor,” Christopher said. “What can stop a team from succeeding when you have those individuals is when they don’t collaborate. Thankfully, some of us had already played together and it was just a matter of fitting the puzzle pieces.”

Career Journey

Selected 24th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft out of Arizona State, Christopher had high hopes of making a significant impact with the Houston Rockets. However, his career took a different path. In June 2023, the Rockets traded him to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a deal for forward Dillon Brooks. The Grizzlies waived him in September, leading to brief stints with the Utah Jazz and their G League affiliate in Salt Lake City before being waived again in January. Miami picked him up next, adding another chapter to his journey.

“Keeping a strong mindset through it all, understanding it’s a journey,” Christopher said. “You can’t be given everything. Some things I had to take, but just being able to embrace the journey.”

Summer League Success

Throughout the NBA Summer League, Christopher was a standout performer, averaging 19.3 points per game while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor and 52.5 percent from three-point range. His leadership and scoring prowess were pivotal in Miami’s success.

In the championship game, he was supported by strong performances from his teammates. Center Kel’el Ware, the 15th pick in the June draft, posted 21 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Alondes Williams contributed 21 points and six assists, while forward Cole Swider scored 19 points. Pelle Larsson, who hit the winning shot in overtime, added 16 points.

Overtime Thriller

The game was tied at 113 heading into overtime, with the target score set at 120. Christopher hit a crucial 3-pointer to give Miami a 118-115 lead, but Memphis forward Jake LaRavia responded with a 3-pointer of his own. Larsson then drove to the basket and hit a runner to clinch the victory for the Heat.

“The coaches drew a great play in the timeout and gave me options to playmake,” Larsson said.

Memphis Grizzlies’ Efforts

LaRavia led all scorers with 32 points for the Grizzlies, while guard Scotty Pippen Jr. recorded 29 points and 11 assists. Forward GG Jackson II finished with 28 points and nine rebounds. Both Pippen Jr. and Jackson were named to the All-Summer League first team, as was Ware.

Future Outlook

Heat coach Dan Bisaccio praised the team’s resilience and collective grit. Named the coach of Miami’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, on July 16, Bisaccio may continue to work with Christopher.

Another stint in the G League wouldn’t deter Christopher. His older brother Patrick’s perseverance in overseas leagues before playing for the Utah Jazz serves as inspiration.

“Who am I to complain about the grind when my brother went through the same thing?” Christopher said. “I’ve faced trials and tribulations. What am I going to do, quit? I wasn’t raised like that.”

Conclusion

Josh Christopher’s journey through the NBA has been filled with challenges, but his determination and resilience have shone through. Leading the Miami Heat to an NBA Summer League championship has been a significant milestone in his career, and he looks forward to continuing his journey with renewed vigor.

🎰 Hard Rock and Treasure Island Tram Service Set to Resume in 2027

When the Hard Rock hotel-casino opens a few years down the road, the tram between it and Treasure Island will be back up and running. Representatives for both properties confirmed that the jointly-operated tram will resume service when Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas open in 2027.

Background and Closure

The free tram, which used to transport guests between the two Strip properties, was shut down in the weeks leading up to the July 17 closure of the Mirage casino-hotel. The Mirage has permanently closed to allow South Florida-based Hard Rock International to begin a multi-year construction project. This project will result in a completely renovated casino-hotel and the addition of a 660-foot hotel tower in the shape of a guitar along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Partnership and Operations

The tram service was a collaboration between Hard Rock International (HRI) and Treasure Island (TI). HRI was responsible for maintaining the tram line, while TI reimbursed 50 percent of the cost. This partnership ensured the tram's continued operation and maintenance, providing a convenient transportation option for guests.

Historical Significance

The TI/Mirage tram system first opened in 1993, during a period when both properties were owned by former casino mogul Steve Wynn. The tram features two cars, each capable of carrying up to 50 passengers. This service has been a notable part of the Las Vegas Strip's transportation infrastructure, offering a free and easy way for guests to move between the two popular destinations.

Future Expectations

The reintroduction of the tram service in 2027 coincides with the opening of the newly transformed Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas. The renovation project promises to bring a new level of luxury and excitement to the Strip, and the tram will once again provide seamless connectivity for guests.

Other Tram Services in Las Vegas

Las Vegas features two other free-to-ride tram services, both operated by MGM Resorts International. One tram connects Aria, the Shops at Crystals, the Bellagio, and Park MGM, while the other, located on the southern end of The Strip, connects Luxor, Excalibur, and Mandalay Bay. These tram services play a crucial role in the city's transportation network, helping visitors navigate the bustling Strip with ease.

Conclusion

The return of the tram service between Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas and Treasure Island marks a significant enhancement in the convenience and accessibility of the Las Vegas Strip. As the Hard Rock International embarks on its ambitious renovation project, the restored tram will once again facilitate the smooth movement of guests, contributing to the vibrant and dynamic experience that Las Vegas is known for.
